What the numbers mean

Applications to UT Austin have grown quickly, from 66,109 for fall 2023 to 90,690 for fall 2025, while the number of admits has stayed close to 20,000. The acceptance rate has fallen as a result, from 29.1% to 22.2%. UT does not offer early decision or early action, and its 2025-26 Common Data Set reports no wait-list policy.

Residency changes the picture completely. Texas law guarantees admission to Texas students in the top 6% of their high school class, so most admits are Texans: for fall 2025, 35.9% of Texas residents were admitted, compared with 7.5% of out-of-state US applicants and 7.9% of international applicants. Automatic admission is to the university, not to a particular major.

Tuition for 2026-27, from the university's cost-of-attendance estimates for a full-time undergraduate (fall and spring): $10,858–$13,576 for Texas residents and $42,554–$51,106 for non-residents. The range reflects the program: McCombs Business and Cockrell Engineering add $550 a semester for residents and $1,100 for non-residents, and Natural Sciences adds $250 or $500. With housing and food ($15,420–$15,580), transport, books and personal costs, UT's estimated total cost of attendance is $32,508–$35,386 for residents and $64,204–$72,916 for non-residents. International students pay the non-resident rate; the Common Data Set lists the same $44,816 typical tuition for out-of-state and non-resident (international) students.

UT Austin requires the SAT or ACT again from the fall 2025 cycle, but its Common Data Set leaves the SAT and ACT score ranges (section C9) blank for fall 2023, 2024 and 2025, so there is no official middle-50% range to quote. International applicants also need English test scores: the minimums are below.
