What the numbers mean

Edinburgh's figures count UCAS applications, not people, and include every application whatever the outcome. 'Offers' include conditional offers; 'acceptances' are applicants who firmly accepted an unconditional offer and were expected to enrol, which is why 36,195 offers in 2025 turned into 7,626 acceptances. The offer rate has risen from 39.7% in 2023 to 52.6% in 2025.

Overseas fee-rate applicants are the largest group, about 30,200 of 68,900 applications in 2025, and in 2025 they received offers at a higher rate (about 61%) than Scotland (45%) or rest-of-UK and Irish (46%) applicants. Edinburgh explains that Scottish Government policy caps the number of Scotland fee-rate students, so competition differs between fee groups even within the same subject. Selection areas vary widely: Medicine made offers on 10% of Overseas applications in 2025, Informatics 41% and Economics 76%.

Tuition fees depend on fee status. For 2026-27 the Scotland fee rate is £1,820 a year and the rest-of-UK and Irish rate is £9,790 (rising to £10,050 in 2027-28, subject to Parliamentary approval). International students pay a fixed annual fee set by their year of entry: students who started in 2025 pay £28,000 a year for classroom-based degrees and £36,800 for laboratory-based degrees, and the international fee for Medicine (MBChB) in 2026-27 is £54,650. Fees for 2026 entry are listed programme by programme in Edinburgh's degree finder.
