What the numbers mean

IU Bloomington's acceptance rate was 75.9% for fall 2025 (56,218 of 74,077), 78.2% for fall 2024 (52,918 of 67,658) and 80.4% for fall 2023 (43,624 of 54,279). Applications rose by almost 20,000 over those two years, while admits rose by about 12,600, so the rate has fallen each year. The figures are for the Bloomington campus only; IU's other campuses are reported separately.

Out-of-state US applicants are admitted at a higher rate than Indiana residents at Bloomington: 78.6% for fall 2025 (39,841 of 50,700) against 72.2% (12,612 of 17,458). International applicants are admitted at a lower rate, 63.6% for fall 2025 (3,765 of 5,919), down from 66.8% for fall 2024 and 70.6% for fall 2023. Transfer applicants were admitted at 62.6% for fall 2025 (1,326 of 2,119).

IU Bloomington has no early decision plan. Its Common Data Set lists a non-binding early action plan closing on 1 November with decisions by 15 January, but does not report early action counts. Wait-list results swing widely: 97 students were admitted from the wait list for fall 2025, against 3,041 of the 3,059 who accepted a place for fall 2024 and 1,143 for fall 2023, so these rates are shown for completeness rather than as a pattern.

IU Bloomington has two English levels. To be admitted, international undergraduates need, for example, TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5 (Duolingo 115, PTE 53) from the last two years; the page gives TOEFL only on the 0–120 scale and has not published a 1–6 figure for tests from 21 January 2026. To start classes without English support courses, admitted students need a higher level, such as TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.5; otherwise IU places them in academic English courses based on their section scores.
