What the numbers mean

RPI's acceptance rate was 67.3% for fall 2025 (9,655 of 14,356), 63.4% for fall 2024 (10,906 of 17,193) and 58.5% for fall 2023 (9,330 of 15,950). Applications fell by about 2,800 between fall 2024 and fall 2025. Two cells needed resolving: in the 2024-25 edition the 'unknown gender' row repeats the totals (17,193 applied, 10,906 admitted), which match the sum of the other rows and the residency table, so they are read as totals; in the 2023-24 edition the gender rows add up to 15,946 applicants against a residency total of 15,950, and the rate is 58.5% on either figure.

RPI offers binding early decision in two rounds (ED I closing 1 November, ED II closing 3 January in the 2025-26 edition) and a separate non-binding early action plan closing 1 December. Early decision applicants were admitted at 69.1% for fall 2025 (219 of 317), 57.9% for fall 2024 and 58.5% for fall 2023. The 2025-26 edition labels its early decision counts 'Fall 2024 entering class', but they differ from the 2024-25 edition's figures, so this page treats that as a leftover label. RPI does not report early action counts. Few students are admitted from the wait list: 6 for fall 2025.

International applicants are admitted at a lower rate than US applicants at RPI: 56.2% for fall 2025 (613 of 1,090), against 67.5% for New York residents and 68.5% for out-of-state US applicants. The international rate was 45.9% for fall 2024 and 48.2% for fall 2023. Transfer applicants were admitted at 64.0% for fall 2025 (222 of 347).

RPI's international admissions page expects a TOEFL iBT score of at least 88, or 4.5 on the new 1–6 scale, and an IELTS overall band of at least 6.5; it also lists Duolingo 115 and PTE 59, and asks applicants to test no later than December of their senior year. Applicants with SAT, ACT, IB, IGCSE/A-level or Cambridge results above set levels, three or more years of US secondary school, or a diploma from a listed English-medium country can be exempt.
