What the numbers mean

UMD's first-year acceptance rate was 45.0% for fall 2025 (30,218 of 67,101), 44.8% for fall 2024 (26,897 of 60,042) and 44.8% for fall 2023 (26,623 of 59,369). Applications rose by 7,059 between fall 2024 and fall 2025 while the rate stayed almost unchanged. UMD enrolled 6,559 first-year students in fall 2025.

UMD splits its applicants into Maryland residents and out-of-state applicants only; the International column of its Common Data Set is blank in all three editions, and the in-state and out-of-state figures add up to the totals, so international applicants are counted inside those two groups and no international acceptance rate is published. For fall 2025 the in-state rate (43.7%) was slightly lower than the out-of-state rate (45.5%); in fall 2024 and fall 2023 Maryland residents were admitted at a higher rate (50.9% and 53.9%) than out-of-state applicants (42.5% and 41.6%).

UMD has no early decision plan. It has a non-binding, non-restrictive early action plan with a 1 November deadline and decisions by 1 February, but it does not report early action applicant or admit counts. It placed 247 applicants on its wait list for fall 2025 and reports that none accepted a place and none were admitted from it; the figures for fall 2024 (250 offered) and fall 2023 (290 offered) are the same pattern. Transfer applicants were admitted at 53.4% for fall 2025 (4,086 of 7,653).

For English proficiency, UMD's admissions page gives a passing TOEFL iBT score of 5 on the 1–6 scale or 95 on the 0–120 scale, an IELTS passing score of 7 and a Duolingo English Test passing score of 120. Applicants with lower scores (TOEFL 4.5 or 94 or lower, IELTS 6.5 or lower, Duolingo 115 or lower) fall in the Maryland English Institute range, and some admitted students are told in their decision letter to complete Maryland English Institute coursework first.
