In the coming weeks, we will be talking about how governments should enforce public safety. We will start with transportation safety, since it accounts for a large portion of public safety. It has become a common practice for most countries to enact laws requiring drivers and passengers to buckle up, and cyclists to wear helmet. Although such measures have proven to be effective in saving lives, critics say that they erode people's freedom. Please share your opinions with the class on this question before our next class: is it justified for governments to require citizens to wear safety gears like safety belts and helmets?
Claire
I will have to say that governments and the police officers are abusing their power when they require citizens to take certain safety measures. Free will is people's most important right, and people should be entitled to use their own discretion when it comes to risk management, as long as it does not involve others, which is the case for safety belts and helmets. In addition, such measures often incur financial burden on citizens. Yes, buckling up and wearing helmets do save lives, but in very rare cases. After all, how often do people get involved in car accidents? But they are now forced to pay certain money for uncertain accidents.
Paul
I advocate human rights and free will as much as Claire, and I would like to point out a fact: survival is the primal human right. So I think it is totally rightful for governments to enforce safety measures to protect the public. Witnessing the tragic and graphic car accident scenes and imagining the huge grief suffered by the victims' families, it would be senseless, if not cruel, to attack such measures. Also, safety belts and helmets do not only save lives, they also dramatically reduce the damage done to those who do survive car accidents and hence the medical costs incurred. All in all, mandatory safety precautions bring about so many benefits, which dwarf its minimal, while necessary, right intrusion.

I agree with Claire, it is not justified for government to require citizens to were safety gears because the citizens need the power of personal free. Section Title: 6 Article Revision
While I understand the importance of personal freedom, I believe that it is justified for governments to require citizens to wear safety gear such as seat belts and helmets. Although these measures may not address the root cause of traffic accidents, they have been proven to save lives and reduce injuries. Instead of viewing these requirements as an infringement on individual liberties, we should consider them as complementary to stricter traffic laws and increased penalties for those who violate them. By combining mandatory safety gear usage with comprehensive traffic regulations, we can create a safer environment for all road users without significantly compromising personal freedom. (110 words)

Title: 6 文章修订
I wholeheartedly concur with Andrew's perspective that imposing environmental taxes on air travel passengers is a beneficial approach to effectively reducing air pollution.
Introducing an environmental tax on air travel would heighten passengers' awareness of the need to protect the environment, serving as a wake-up call for them to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. For instance, they might opt for public transportation over driving personal vehicles, which would subsequently decrease exhaust emissions. Moreover, as more individuals recognize the significance of mitigating air pollution and scrutinize airlines' fuel consumption practices, a positive feedback loop will emerge. This increased social pressure on airlines to adopt environmentally responsible measures is likely to be more effective than direct financial penalties.
Additionally, the revenue generated from these taxes could be utilized by governments to advance technologies that reduce the necessity for air travel. For example, investing in remote meeting capabilities could significantly decrease business-related flights. By strategically allocating these funds towards promoting sustainable alternatives, we can collectively work towards a cleaner and greener future. (174 words)

I think both Paul's and Clarie's opinions make sense. Recycling and reusing old products can drastically decrease the pollution to the environment, as well as reduce the production of plastic utensils which may consume more petroleum. Local organic food is also environmentally friendly because the crops and vegetables are planted without harmful toxin such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Thus fewer greenhouse gases and harmful ingredients will be emitted into the natural world, posing a negative effect on human's health. Besides, personally speaking, I think we can also take public transportation instead of driving cars by ourselves. Cars emit a large amount of carbon dioxide every year, which can make the greenhouse effect more serious. If we take buses or trains powered by clean power, not only will we save money but also can help ease the greenhouse effect.

I concur with both Claire's and Paul's perspectives. Recycling and reusing materials can significantly mitigate environmental pollution and decrease the production of disposable items, which often require more resources, such as petroleum.
Moreover, supporting local organic food production is another environmentally friendly approach, as it avoids the use of harmful substances like pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Consequently, this reduces greenhouse gas emissions and harmful residues that could negatively impact human health.
Furthermore, I believe that opting for public transportation instead of driving personal vehicles can contribute to environmental protection. Cars are responsible for a substantial amount of carbon dioxide emissions annually, exacerbating the greenhouse effect. By choosing buses or trains powered by clean energy sources, we can not only save money but also help alleviate the greenhouse effect. (132 words)

In my opinion, prioritizing the use of public transportation and reducing personal vehicle usage are essential steps individuals can take to protect the environment. Firstly, driving less leads to decreased consumption of fossil fuels, subsequently reducing pollutants generated by burning petroleum. Moreover, diminished demand for fuel would encourage companies to produce less, thereby decreasing pollution. Secondly, opting for public transportation is a feasible option for everyone. Unlike the proposal of purchasing organic food—which may be financially burdensome for some—utilizing public transportation is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Consequently, I believe that embracing public transportation is the most practical and accessible approach individuals can adopt to contribute positively to environmental preservation. (114 words)

I believe that an environmental tax should be set on air travel since it inspires the awareness of the customers to protect the environment. To elaborate, passengers could visually realize how much they have done by seeing the number of taxes shown on the website, encouraging them to choose more eco-friendly airlines in the future. For example, when I choose the airline for my trip, I will select the lower-tax airline, which indicates less pollution from that. Some might claim that taxes should be paid by airlines rather than customers because taxes are punishing passengers without incentivizing airlines to become more eco-friendly. However, the market decides the support. If more and more customers are keen to choose eco-friendly planes by measuring green taxes, healthy competition will be built, so the companies might pay more attention to designing their products to be more environmentally friendly.

Revised Essay: I am in favor of implementing an environmental tax on air travel, as it fosters environmental consciousness among passengers. Specifically, by displaying the tax amount on ticket booking websites, customers can gauge their environmental impact and be motivated to opt for more eco-friendly airlines in the future. For instance, when selecting an airline for my journey, I would choose one with lower taxes, signifying reduced pollution levels. While some argue that such taxes unfairly burden passengers without incentivizing airlines to adopt greener practices, I contend that market forces will ultimately drive change. As an increasing number of customers prioritize eco-friendly carriers based on their green tax contributions, a healthy competitive environment will emerge, compelling companies to focus on developing more environmentally sustainable products and services. In my perspective, prioritizing the use of public transportation and minimizing personal vehicle usage are essential steps individuals can take for environmental protection. Firstly, reduced reliance on private vehicles leads to decreased consumption of fossil fuels, consequently diminishing air pollution caused by burning petroleum. Furthermore, a lower demand for fuel encourages companies to produce less, thereby mitigating industrial pollution. Secondly, opting for public transportation is a feasible option for everyone. Unlike Paul's suggestion of purchasing organic food, which may be financially burdensome for some individuals, utilizing public transit is a cost-effective and accessible solution. Therefore, I believe that embracing public transportation is the most practical and efficient way for individuals to contribute to environmental conservation. (119 words)

Firstly, investing in the improvement and expansion of public transportation, such as constructing subway lines, increasing the number of buses in cities, and enhancing train connectivity between cities, would encourage more people to opt for these modes of transport. The convenience, affordability, and environmental benefits of public transportation make it an attractive choice for commuters. Admittedly, Paul was right that developing electric-car manufactures will benefit the environment in the long term. This innovative way not only improves our technical development but is also beneficial for traveling. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential drawbacks of electric-car. Many people still prefer to drive gasoline-powered cars since they need less time to replenish the petrol and they can keep driving for much longer than electric-car when people have a long trip. Besides, purchasing a new electric-car is too costly for many families and there are not enough parking lots provided for too many new cars in the city. In these situations, developing electric-car is not efficient in reducing carbon dioxide. Therefore, as Claire mentioned, supporting public transportation will be more effective. The lower cost and convenience will attract more people to choose public transportation. Take the Beijing subway for example, it can almost reach any place in Beijing and more than 6 million people take it to commute every day. Developed public transportation in Beijing is also a factor that affects the management of haze in Beijing. It’s crucial for the government to develop public transportation which is beneficial for citizens’ commute and environmental conservation.

While Paul makes a valid point that supporting electric car manufacturers will have long-term environmental benefits and promote technological advancements, it is essential to consider the potential drawbacks of relying solely on electric vehicles. Many individuals still prefer gasoline-powered cars due to their quicker refueling times and longer driving ranges, particularly for extended trips. Additionally, the high cost of purchasing an electric vehicle remains prohibitive for numerous families, and urban areas often lack sufficient parking spaces to accommodate an influx of new cars. In these circumstances, promoting electric vehicles may not be the most efficient method for reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
On the other hand, as Claire suggests, investing in public transportation infrastructure could prove more effective in mitigating environmental impacts. By offering affordable and convenient alternatives to personal vehicle use, public transportation systems can attract a larger number of users. For instance, Beijing's extensive subway network serves over six million daily commuters and provides access to nearly every corner of the city. This well-developed public transportation system has played a significant role in managing air pollution levels in Beijing.
Given these considerations, it is crucial for governments to prioritize the development of public transportation as a means of promoting both efficient commuting options and environmental conservation. By doing so, they can encourage citizens to make more sustainable choices while also addressing some of the limitations associated with electric vehicles. (233 words)

Admittedly, Paul was right that developing electric-car manufactures [manufactures->manufacturers] (corrected word form) will benefit the environment in the long term. This innovative way not only improves our technical development but is also beneficial for traveling.
Nevertheless, it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential drawbacks of electric-car. [electric-car->electric vehicles] (improved consistency and clarity). Many people still prefer to drive gasoline-powered cars since they need less time to replenish the petrol and they can keep driving for much longer than electric-car [electric-car->electric vehicles] (improved consistency and clarity) when people have a long trip. Besides, purchasing a new electric-car [electric-car->electric vehicle] (improved consistency and clarity) is too costly for many families and there are not enough parking lots provided for too many new cars in the city. In these situations, developing electric-car [electric-car->electric vehicles] (improved consistency and clarity) is not efficient in reducing carbon dioxide.
Therefore, as Claire mentioned, supporting public transportation will be more effective. The lower cost and convenience will attract more people to choose public transportation. Take the Beijing subway subway[,] (added comma for better flow) for example, it can almost reach any place in Beijing Beijing[,] (added comma for better flow) and more than 6 million people take it to commute every day. Developed public transportation in Beijing is also a factor that affects the management of haze in Beijing. It’s crucial for the government to develop public transportation transportation[,] (added comma for better flow) which is beneficial for citizens’ commute and environmental conservation.

Although Claire and Paul shed light on the importance of making laws and preserving natural places to protect the environment separately, still I believe that education is one of the best approaches the governments could take to protect the natural environment. Firstly, education enables governments to arise public awareness to protect the nature. Since many people lacks some backgroud knowledge about what behavior damages the environment, they usually harm the environment unintentionally. In this case, if the government provides them with some education such as lectures or posters to help them realize the significance of protecting nature, they will soon stop their unconcious behaviors. For instance, my grandma used to throw rabbish on the street casually. However, after she listened to a speech about protecting our Earth, she never does it again. Additionally, education stimulates people's brainstorm which helps us to find a better solution to protect the nature. In conclusion, I believe that education is the most important strategy that the government should take.

While Claire and Paul emphasize the significance of implementing laws and preserving natural spaces for environmental protection, I maintain that education is a crucial approach governments should adopt to safeguard the natural environment. Education empowers governments to raise public awareness regarding environmental conservation. Many individuals lack the necessary background knowledge to understand how their actions impact the environment, often causing unintentional harm. By providing educational resources such as lectures or informational posters, governments can help citizens recognize the importance of protecting nature and encourage them to cease detrimental behaviors. For example, my grandmother used to casually litter on the streets; however, after attending a speech about environmental preservation, she ceased this practice. Furthermore, education fosters innovative thinking that can lead to more effective solutions for environmental protection. From my point of view, I firmly believe that it is not a reasonable way to add the environmental taxes on the air travel, a sentiment that aligns with Claire. The primary rationale behind this stance is that the more taxes which are imposing on individuals, the more financial burden that people might have. As we all know, people are required to pay large multitudes to taxes in the contemporary society, such as the product taxes, housing taxes and some medical taxes. Thus, paying an extra fee might lead to people’s dissatisfaction to society and their financial strain. While Andrew’s argument regarding the other way of people might choose to travel holds some merits, it is totally crucial that this method will not solve the problem radically. As an illustration, if someday the government do not impose the air taxes, people would still start to use planes primarily due to its highly convenience. In light of this, I propose that government should give some allowances to those who do not take airplanes. And this might be more directly and effectively.

Section Title: Environmental Taxes on Air Travel
In my opinion, implementing environmental taxes on air travel is not an effective solution to address air pollution, echoing Claire's perspective. The main reason for this stance is that imposing additional taxes on individuals would result in increased financial burdens. It is well-known that people already face numerous tax obligations in modern society, such as product taxes, housing taxes, and medical taxes. Consequently, adding extra fees could lead to public dissatisfaction and financial strain.
While Andrew's argument about encouraging alternative modes of transportation has some merit, it is essential to recognize that this approach does not address the root cause of the problem. For instance, if the government were to remove air travel taxes at some point, people would likely revert to using airplanes primarily due to their convenience. Therefore, I suggest that the government should instead provide incentives for those who opt for more environmentally friendly transportation methods. This approach could prove to be more direct and effective in promoting sustainable travel choices. (171 words)

Although the advantages of diverse entertainment and business facilities in urban areas are undeniable, I firmly advocate for prioritizing the use of available land for green spaces, given their immense value in promoting environmental and public well-being. Green areas, such as parks and gardens, play a crucial role in enhancing air quality by filtering particulate matter and facilitating the absorption of carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen. Moreover, these spaces provide citizens with opportunities to engage in physical activities, breathe fresh air, socialize with friends and family, and participate in various events. Consequently, the presence of green spaces contributes to a more vibrant, healthy, and enjoyable urban lifestyle. By allocating land for parks and gardens within city centers, we can foster a more harmonious and comfortable living experience for urban dwellers. (133 words)

While I acknowledge the benefits of certification programs in providing focused skill sets and flexibility, I believe that a traditional university education still holds significant value. University degrees offer a comprehensive understanding of a subject, fostering critical thinking and research skills that extend beyond the scope of short-term certification courses. Moreover, universities provide an environment for intellectual growth and networking opportunities, which can prove invaluable in one's professional journey.
In the context of environmental science, a university degree allows students to explore various aspects of the field, from policy-making to ecological conservation. This holistic approach equips graduates with the necessary tools to address complex environmental issues effectively. Therefore, despite the appeal of certification programs, I maintain that pursuing a traditional university degree remains a worthwhile investment for those seeking to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields. While I acknowledge the benefits of certification programs in providing focused skill sets and flexibility (reason: clarifying the advantages of certification programs), I believe that a traditional university education still holds significant value. University degrees offer a comprehensive understanding of a subject, fostering critical thinking and research skills that extend beyond the scope of short-term certification courses (reason: emphasizing the broader educational benefits of university degrees). Moreover, universities provide an environment for intellectual growth and networking opportunities, which can prove invaluable in one's professional journey (reason: highlighting additional advantages of attending a university).
In the context of environmental science, a university degree allows students to explore various aspects of the field, from policy-making to ecological conservation (reason: providing specific examples related to environmental science). This holistic approach equips graduates with the necessary tools to address complex environmental issues effectively (reason: explaining how a comprehensive education benefits graduates). Therefore, despite the appeal of certification programs, I maintain that pursuing a traditional university degree remains a worthwhile investment for those seeking to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields (reason: restating the main argument in favor of university education).

I firmly agree with Andrew's opinion that taxing passengers on air travel is useful because it's more effective when it comes to reducing air pollution. Passengers will raise awareness of protecting the environment when there is a tax on air travel, which sounds alarms to them. In this case, they are more likely to make eco-friendly efforts in daily life, such as using public transportation instead of driving cars, which will reduce exhaust emissions. Additionally, a good green circle will form as more and more people realize the importance of ceasing air pollution and form supervision of patrol usage of airlines, which is more effective than taxing on the airline itself, for airlines are more liable to take measures under social pressure as opposed to financial punishment. Furthermore, the taxes can also reduce air travel if the government allocate this money to promote technology, such as remote meetings, which will certainly reduce business air travel.

I wholeheartedly concur with Andrew's perspective that imposing environmental taxes on air travel passengers is a viable approach to mitigating air pollution.
Introducing such taxes would heighten passengers' awareness of their environmental impact, prompting them to adopt more eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. For instance, they might opt for public transportation over personal vehicles, thereby reducing exhaust emissions. Moreover, as an increasing number of individuals recognize the urgency of addressing air pollution, they may exert pressure on airlines to adopt greener practices. This collective scrutiny would likely prove more effective than merely penalizing airlines financially.
Additionally, the revenue generated from these environmental taxes could be strategically allocated by the government to advance technologies that minimize the need for air travel. For example, investing in remote meeting capabilities could significantly reduce business-related flights. Ultimately, this approach would not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also foster a culture of responsibility and innovation in addressing pressing ecological concerns. (161 words)
