How Your Score Is Calculated

Mode 1 — Section-score average

  • Each section is scored 1.0–6.0 in 0.5 increments.
  • Overall band = simple average of all four sections.
  • Result is rounded to the nearest 0.5.
  • All sections are weighted equally — no section counts more than another.

Overall = (R + L + S + W) ÷ 4

Example

(4.0 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 4.0) ÷ 4 = 4.0

Mode 2 — Target + partial scores

  • Pick your target overall band and enter the section scores you already know.
  • Leave at least one section blank — those are the ones the calculator solves for.
  • Math: needed total = 4 × target − sum of filled; even split across missing sections.
  • Adjust your filled sections or target to play with realistic combinations.

Example — Target Band 4.5

R = 4.5 · L = 4.5 · S = ? · W = ?

Needed total = 4 × 4.5 − 9.0 = 9.0

Average needed in S & W = 4.5

How to Use This TOEFL Score Calculator

Two short workflows depending on what you already know. Whichever mode you start with, you can switch to the other any time without losing your inputs.

How do I calculate my TOEFL 2026 band from my section scores?

TOEFL Score Calculator in sections mode showing Reading 5.0, Listening 5.5, Speaking 4.0, and Writing dropdown open with band options 1.0 through 6.0
  1. 1Make sure the toggle is on "I have my section scores".
  2. 2Pick your band (1.0–6.0 in 0.5 increments) for each of Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing. Empty sections are excluded — useful if you only have partial scores from a recent practice round.
  3. 3Click Calculate Score. The result panel shows your overall band, level (e.g. "Advanced"), and a per-section breakdown color-coded against the average so you can spot weak sections instantly.

How do I figure out what my missing sections need to score?

TOEFL Score Calculator in target-and-partial-scores mode with Target Band 5.5 selected, Reading 5.0, Listening 5.5, Speaking dropdown open with leave-blank option highlighted, Writing 4.0, and an Estimate Missing Scores button
  1. 1Switch the toggle to "I have a target + partial scores".
  2. 2Pick your target overall band. This is usually the published minimum at your top-choice school plus a 0.5 buffer — check the University Admission Calculator if you don't know it yet.
  3. 3Fill in the section scores you already have, leave at least one blank.
  4. 4Click Estimate Missing Scores. The calculator returns the average band needed across the empty sections to hit your target. Adjust your filled scores or target to explore which combinations are realistic.

Pro tip — take a full mock first

The calculator is most useful when your section scores come from a full timed mock rather than untimed exercises. LingoLeap's 2026-aligned mock tests give you AI-scored Speaking & Writing bands you can plug straight into either workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the TOEFL 2026 overall score calculated?
The TOEFL 2026 overall band score is the simple average of your four section scores — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — rounded to the nearest 0.5. Each section is scored independently on a 1.0–6.0 band scale in 0.5 increments. To calculate your overall band, add the four section scores and divide by four. For example: Reading 4.0 + Listening 4.5 + Speaking 3.5 + Writing 4.0 = 16.0 ÷ 4 = 4.0 overall. No section is weighted more than another — all four contribute equally. See the official ETS TOEFL scoring documentation for the underlying scale definition, or read the 2026 Score Scale Explained guide for a more detailed walkthrough.
How does the target + partial scores mode work?
The "I have a target + partial scores" mode reverse-engineers what your remaining sections need to score to reach a chosen overall band. You set the target overall band, fill in the section scores you already know, and leave at least one section blank. The calculator computes the required total across the missing sections (4 × target − sum of filled), then divides evenly across the empty sections so you see the average band each missing section needs. If the target is unreachable even with Band 6.0 in the missing sections, the tool tells you; if your filled sections already exceed the target, it tells you that too. Use this mode after a partial mock test to see whether your weakest sections still need to lift, then take that figure into the Score Gap Planner for a prioritized study plan.
What if I only have scores for some sections?
Both modes accept partial input. In sections-mode, the calculator averages only the sections you provide — useful as a quick projection, but it will not reflect your true overall band if untested sections differ from the average. In target-mode, partial input is the point: it tells you what the missing sections need to score to hit a target. Your official TOEFL 2026 score always requires all four sections to be completed — see the ETS test format reference.
What is the minimum TOEFL 2026 section score?
On the TOEFL 2026 scale, section scores range from 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments. The minimum reported score for any attempted section is 1.0 — there is no zero on the 2026 band scale for sections that were attempted. A score below 1.0 is only possible if a section was entirely skipped. Section minimums also matter for universities: some programs require not just a minimum overall band but also a minimum score in individual sections — for example, a minimum Band 4.0 in Writing for writing-intensive programs. The University Admission Calculator surfaces section-level minimums alongside overall-band requirements for the schools in our database.
Can I improve my score by focusing on one section?
Yes — because the TOEFL 2026 overall score is a simple average of four sections, improving your weakest section has a direct, proportional effect on your overall band. For example, if your current section scores are 4.0, 4.0, 3.0, 3.0 (overall 3.5), raising both your lowest scores from 3.0 to 4.0 would lift your overall band to 4.0. Speaking and Writing often have the most room for improvement through deliberate practice because they are skill-based rather than knowledge-based. Use the Score Gap Planner to enter your current section scores and target overall band — it will show you exactly how much improvement is needed per section, with a prioritized study plan.
What overall band score do most universities require?
University TOEFL 2026 band requirements vary by institution type and program level. Most QS top 100 US universities require an overall band of 4.0–4.5 for undergraduate admission. Highly selective programs at top 20–30 US universities — particularly at the graduate level — typically require Band 5.0 or above. UK universities generally align with these benchmarks. ETS publishes a score-use reference for admissions offices that informs many institutional minimums. Always verify the exact requirement on the official admissions page, or use the University Admission Calculator for verified data on 100+ US and UK institutions.
