Professor

Next week we'll begin chapter 5, which deals with the ethical treatment of animals. Please start thinking about that now by considering the role of zoos. Some animal welfare activists have asked for all zoos to be banned, claiming they are cruel to animals. However, many animal conservationists disagree with that idea. For today's discussion board, please explain your opinion about this topic. Should zoos be banned? Why or why not?

Student A

Yes, I think they should be banned. Keeping animals in small, enclosed spaces is cruel. It goes completely against their nature. Some animals have huge natural territories, hundreds of square kilometers, but in a zoo they're kept in enclosures of maybe a few hundred square meters. I think this speaks for itself.

Student B

No, I think zoos are generally helpful to animals. The animals in my hometown zoo look content and well cared for, and the zoo breeds some endangered animals so that their populations can be restored in their natural habitats. For example, the zoo scientists bred a near-extinct bird species and released the birds back into the wild, so the zoo helped save them.

From my point of view, I fully concur with Claire that zoos is of essential importance to animals. Not only can zoos provide a golden opportunity for citizens to get access to the anilams and evoke their love for these sweet lives, but also serves as the best shelter for some endangered animals and protect them from ditinction. Not equipped with proffessional devices and equipments, it's not recommended for residents to go into forests to explore and expirience the wild animals' world. Meanwhile, for some endgered animals, they may lack the ability of raising up their small babies considering the cruelty of the nature and food chains. Thus, the zoos offers a best region for animals to grow and for children to learn. Admittedly, some people may argue the what the wild lives search for is freedom and larger space. Nonetheless, it ignores the fact that the first and foremost thing for animals even humans is surviving.

Section Title: The Role of Zoos in Animal Welfare and Conservation

In my perspective, I firmly agree with the notion that zoos play a crucial role in promoting animal welfare and conservation. Zoos not only offer invaluable opportunities for people to observe and appreciate various species, fostering a love for these creatures, but they also serve as vital sanctuaries for endangered animals, protecting them from extinction. Given the lack of professional equipment and expertise among the general public, it is impractical to expect individuals to venture into forests to explore and experience the world of wildlife. Furthermore, certain endangered species may struggle to raise their offspring due to the harsh realities of nature and food chains. Consequently, zoos provide an optimal environment for these animals to thrive while simultaneously educating children about wildlife. While some may argue that wild animals inherently desire freedom and expansive spaces, this argument overlooks the fundamental priority for all living beings - survival. (158 words)
