読解パッセージ

The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake’s water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake’s water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake’s water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake’s health. One option is direct removal of salt from the lake’s water in special desalination facilities. Water from the lake would be pumped into the facilities and heated. This would cause the water to evaporate into steam, while salt and other materials dissolved in the water would be left behind. The steam would then be cooled down and returned to the lake as salt-free water. Gradually, the high salt levels would be reduced and the lake’s overall health would be restored.Another possible solution is to dilute the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean. Since water in the Pacific Ocean is 20 percent less salty than water in the lake, bringing ocean water into the lake would decrease the lake’s salinity. The ocean water could be delivered through pipelines or canals.Yet another solution would be to control the lake’s salinity by constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections. In the smaller sections, salinity would be allowed to increase. However, in the main and largest section, salinity would be reduced and controlled by, among other things, directing all the freshwater from small rivers in the area to flow into that main section of the lake.

The same question on how to decrease salinity of lake has been well analyzed in both passage and lecture. In the passage, three solutions, including, removing salt, diluting and seperating lake, has been elaborated. However, the professor in the lecture contradicts that all these methods are not useful. Firstly, the writer points out that salt in the lake can be directly removed by pumping and heating. Nevertheless, the speaker refutes that toxic chemicals could be generated in such process. In detail, she contends that when the water of lake is heating, some solid matter is left, which contains both salt and toxic matters. Toxic matters are transmitted with air and harmful for people's health. Secondly, the reading states that diluting lake's water by ocean water is plausible. However, the listening disapproves that it is too expensive to transport water from the ocean to the lake. To delve further, she maintains that the lake is 100 km far away from the ocean, which means that building long pipeline takes lots of money. Goverment can not afford for this infrastructure. Lastly, the passage conveys the point that the lake could be divided into small sections that is easy to control salinity. Yet, the lecture contradicts that dividing is not a long useful plan. She advances the theory by saying that walls for dividing the lake will collapse if meet earthquake or other intense earth's activities. In this case, the effort before would be wasted and water from main section will flow to other section with high salinity. Hence, the speaker completely disagrees with the opinions expressed in the reading.

In the passage, three solutions, including, removing salt, diluting and seperatingseparating(misspelling) lake, has been elaborated. However, the professor in the lecture contradicts that all these methods are not useful.

Toxic matters are transmitted with air and harmful for people's health.

Secondly, the reading states that diluting lake's water by ocean water is plausible. However, the listening disapproves that it is too expensive to transport water from the ocean to the lake. GovermentGovernment(misspelling) can not afford for this infrastructure.

Lastly, the passage conveys the point that the lake could be divided into small sections that isare(Detects potentially wrong usage of "is") easy to control salinity. Yet, the lecture contradicts that dividing is not a long useful plan. She advances the theory by saying that walls for dividing the lake will collapse if meet earthquake or other intense earth's activities. Section Title: 6.文章修订

The issue of decreasing the salinity of the lake is thoroughly analyzed in both the passage and the lecture. The passage elaborates on three potential solutions: direct salt removal, dilution with ocean water, and dividing the lake into separate sections. However, the professor in the lecture contends that none of these methods are practical or effective.

Firstly, the author suggests that salt can be removed from the lake by pumping and heating its water. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that this process could generate toxic chemicals. Specifically, she explains that when lake water is heated, solid matter containing both salt and toxic substances is left behind. These toxic substances can become airborne and pose a threat to human health.

Secondly, the passage posits that diluting the lake's water with ocean water is a viable solution. Nevertheless, the speaker refutes this idea by highlighting its high cost due to transportation challenges. She emphasizes that since the lake is located 100 km away from the ocean, constructing a long pipeline or canal system would be prohibitively expensive for local government resources.

Lastly, while the passage proposes dividing the lake into smaller sections to better control salinity levels, the lecturer disputes this as a long-term solution. She reasons that any walls built for this purpose would likely collapse during earthquakes or other intense geological activities common in that region. Consequently, previous efforts would be wasted as water from different sections with varying salinity levels would mix again.

In conclusion, the speaker strongly disagrees with all of the solutions presented in the reading passage due to their impracticality and potential negative consequences. (273 words)

The debate regarding decreasing the salinity of the Salton Sea is addressed by both the author and the professor. In the reading passage, the author presents three solutions for desalination. Nevertheless, the professor effectively casts doubt on each solution made in the reading passage by providing alternative perspectives and highlighting potential negative consequences, indicating it is neither practical nor realistic. To begin with, in contrast to the author’s claim in terms of the direct removal of salt from the Salton Sea’s water by means of desalination facilities, the professor contends that it will present serious problems, specifically health risks. In detail, he points out the wind is going to bring toxic chemicals into the air, which are formed through water evaporating. Consequently, people breathe the polluted air in, leading to health problems. Moreover, the professor further challenges the author’s assertion that it is effective to dilute the salt level with water, using pipelines and canals. He argues that although it may work out, the expanse of constructing pipelines and canals is prohibitive, which the government could not pay for. In addition, the expanse of construction for such a long distance, 100 kilometers, to be more specific, is costly. Furthermore, while the author implies the way of constructing walls to separate the lake into several sections to control the salinity, the professor presents a dissenting view. He emphasizes that it is unlikely to work for a long time because there are frequent geological activities in the region, such as earthquakes, which are able to destroy the walls easily. As a result, the dividing walls are only effective for a short while before they collapse due to earthquakes.

Specifically, he explains that the desalination process would produce toxic chemicals like selenium, which could be spread by wind and pose a health risk to people who breathe them in.

Additionally, regarding the second solution proposed in the reading passage—diluting salt levels with ocean water using pipelines and canals—the professor argues that although it may work theoretically, its implementation is financially prohibitive. He emphasizes that constructing pipelines or canals over such a long distance (100 kilometers) would be costly and beyond local government resources.

Lastly, while the author suggests constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections as a means of controlling salinity levels, the professor presents a dissenting view. He emphasizes that this solution is unlikely to be effective long-term due to frequent geological activities in the region, such as earthquakes. Consequently, even if dividing walls were built successfully initially, they would likely collapse during an earthquake and render this solution ineffective in controlling salinity levels.

In light of these counterarguments presented by the professor during his lecture, it becomes evident that each of these proposed solutions has significant drawbacks or limitations that make them impractical or unrealistic for addressing salinity issues in California's Salton Sea. (283 words)

In the lecture, the professor casts doubt on several solutions proposed in the reading passage to reduce the salinity of the Salton Sea, asserting that these solutions are neither realistic nor practical.

Firstly, while the passage suggests that salt can be directly removed from the lake by heating water and leaving salt and other materials behind, the professor contends that this practice could result in serious problems. The materials left behind would include toxic chemicals which, if spread into other areas and inhaled by people, would pose a significant health risk.

The lecture casts doubt on the solutions proposed in the reading passage for addressing the increasing salinity of the Salton Sea in California. The reading passage suggests three potential solutions: desalination, bringing ocean water into the lake, and dividing the lake into sections with walls. However, the lecturer argues that these solutions are not realistic or practical due to various reasons.

Regarding the first solution of desalination, the lecturer contends that this method would pose significant health risks. Although desalination would reduce salinity by evaporating water and leaving behind solid materials, it would also produce toxic chemicals such as selenium. These hazardous substances could be dispersed by wind and inhaled by people, causing serious health issues.

The second solution proposed in the reading passage involves diluting the lake's salt levels with ocean water delivered through pipelines or canals. The lecturer disputes this solution by highlighting its financial impracticality. Constructing pipelines or canals over long distances would be prohibitively expensive, and it is uncertain whether local governments possess sufficient resources to fund such a project. Furthermore, the nearest shoreline of the Pacific Ocean is 100 kilometers away, exacerbating construction costs.

Lastly, the reading passage suggests controlling salinity by constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections. In smaller sections, salinity would be allowed to increase while freshwater from nearby rivers would flow into a larger main section to maintain lower salinity levels. The lecturer challenges this solution due to its vulnerability to geological activity in the region. Earthquakes are frequent occurrences near Salton Sea; thus, any constructed walls are likely to collapse during seismic events, causing high-salinity water from smaller sections to mix back with low-salinity water in the main section.

In summary, although well-intentioned, each of these proposed solutions faces significant challenges as presented by the lecturer. Desalination raises health concerns due to toxic chemicals produced in the process, bringing ocean water into the lake is financially impractical, and dividing the lake with walls is vulnerable to the region's geological activity. Consequently, alternative solutions must be explored to address the Salton Sea's increasing salinity and preserve its fish and bird populations. (353 words)

The reading passage outlines three ways to reverse the trend that the lake become too salty for fish and bird to live in, while the lecture refutes each of them sequentially. Firstly, the passage claims through the action directly removing salt from lake's water with special equipments and making water evaporate would solve the problem. However, the speaker challenge this notion, stating that after pumping and heating salty water, salt left behind might be toxic chemicals. If wind bring them into the air, they would be danger to the health. Secondly, the passage asserts that another possible solution is to dilute the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean as water in the ocean is 2o percent less salty than lake's water, decreasing the salinity of the lake. The speaker disputes this method by arguing that it is too expensive for the local government to build constructions to pump water from the Pacific Ocean because the distance is over 1000 kilometers away from the lake and the government cannot built such long pump way. Lastly, the reading states that controlling lake's salinity with walls in several places can stop the trend continuing. The walls allow salinity in small area increase, while the salinity would be controlled in most large sections. Contrarily, the speaker maintains that the wall can't work long due to frequency and intense earthquakes which would damage the walls and water would run back into the main section.

  1. Revised Essay

The reading passage presents three potential solutions to prevent the Salton Sea from becoming too salty for fish and bird populations to survive, while the lecture casts doubt on each of these proposals.

Firstly, the passage suggests that directly removing salt from the lake's water using special desalination facilities could resolve the issue. However, the speaker challenges this idea, arguing that after pumping and heating the salty water, toxic chemicals might be left behind along with the salt. If wind carries these chemicals into the air, they could pose a significant health risk.

Secondly, the passage proposes diluting the lake's salt levels with ocean water as a viable solution since ocean water is 20 percent less salty than lake water, thus decreasing salinity. The speaker disputes this method by pointing out that constructing pipelines or canals to transport water from the Pacific Ocean would be prohibitively expensive for local government due to its distance of over 100 kilometers from the lake.

Lastly, according to the reading, controlling salinity by constructing walls in several areas could halt this detrimental trend. These walls would allow salinity to increase in smaller sections while being controlled in larger areas. In contrast, the speaker asserts that such walls would not be effective long-term due to frequent and intense earthquakes in the region which could damage them and cause high-salinity water to mix back into main sections of the lake. Section Title: 6.文章修订

The increasing salinity of the Salton Sea, resulting from water evaporation, is a concern for both the author and the lecturer. In the reading passage, three potential solutions are proposed: desalination facilities, diluting with ocean water, and constructing walls to divide the lake. However, the lecturer casts doubt on these solutions as being impractical.

Contrary to the desalination solution presented in the reading passage, the lecturer highlights that solid materials left behind during this process could pose health risks. Specifically, toxic substances such as selenium may be released into the atmosphere and cause respiratory health issues when inhaled.

Furthermore, the lecturer challenges the feasibility of diluting lake water with ocean water due to high costs associated with this approach. She emphasizes that constructing pipelines or canals over long distances (at least 100 kilometers) would require significant financial resources that may not be available to local governments.

Lastly, the lecturer disputes the effectiveness of building walls to divide sections of the lake as a long-term solution. She argues that since Salton Sea is located in an area prone to frequent geological activity like earthquakes, these walls would likely be destroyed by such events. Consequently, water from high-salinity sections would mix back into low-salinity areas, rendering this solution ineffective in maintaining distinct salinity levels within different sections of the lake.
