Professor

As discussed in class, the concept of health has evolved over time, and with advancements in technology and medicine, it is often believed that staying healthy is easier in modern times. However, some argue that current lifestyles and environmental factors have made it more challenging to maintain good health. In which period would you argue it is easier for people to stay in a healthy condition—at present or in the past? Why?

Amber

I would definitely say that it is easier to maintain good health nowadays than in the past. It is important to consider the various factors that contribute to people's health. In the past, access to healthcare was limited and medical knowledge was not as advanced as it is today. Also, people's lifestyles were often less healthy due to factors such as limited access to healthy food and a lack of awareness about the importance of exercise.

Jonah

I hold a different view from Amber and believe that it was actually easier to stay healthy in the past. Most people led healthier, more active lives in the past so there was no need to go the gym in their spare time. There were far fewer sedentary jobs in those days so there was no obsession to keep fit. Also, in terms of the issue of food and diet, there were far fewer additives and processed foods in the past, meaning that people had healthier diets.

Jonah provides a convincing opinion that it was easier to stay healthy in the past due to their healthier lifestyles and fewer unhealthy jobs. However, I disagree with Jonah and think it is easier to keep fit nowadays because of the highly developed science and technology. Contributing to the modern medical science, a lot of diseases that are considered to be incurable are actually curable today. In particular, the development of vaccines highly prevents a variety of illnesses to harm people. So in my opinion, it would be definitely easier for people to keep healthy nowadays provided modern medical assistance is available.

While Jonah presents a compelling argument that maintaining good health was easier in the past due to more active lifestyles and fewer sedentary jobs, I respectfully disagree. In my view, it is simpler to stay healthy in the present day, primarily due to advancements in science and technology. Modern medical breakthroughs have rendered numerous previously incurable diseases treatable, and the development of vaccines has significantly reduced the prevalence of various illnesses. The evolution of health over time has led to the belief that maintaining a healthy state is easier in the modern era due to advancements in technology and medicine. However, I contend that despite these advancements, achieving well-being today is more challenging than it was in the past.

Jonah's argument highlights that people in the past led healthier and more physically active lives due to their work assignments, reducing the need for gym visits during their leisure time. Furthermore, he points out that fewer additives and processed foods were present in their diets, resulting in healthier eating habits. Consequently, individuals faced fewer obstacles to maintaining good health in those days.

While Amber acknowledges that access to healthcare was limited and medical knowledge less advanced in the past, she overlooks the impact of modern technology on our lifestyles. Today's electronic devices encourage sedentary behavior as people spend considerable time engaged with screens rather than participating in physical activities. This shift towards a more inactive lifestyle makes it harder for individuals to maintain good health despite advances in medical knowledge and healthcare accessibility.

In essence, although our understanding of health and medical treatments has improved significantly over time, these advancements have not necessarily made it easier for individuals to maintain good health. The challenges posed by modern lifestyles and technology have made staying fit more difficult today than it was in previous eras. (235 words)

Although nowadays people have easier accesses to modern health facilities and organic food, and acquire more awareness of healthcare, I do believe that it is more difficult to maintain healthy at present than in the past. To begin with, people nowadays are overwhelmed with overload work and suffer greater pressure than before. Taking on too much workload in order to attain better lives impact both physical and mental health. Therefore, they are more likely to suffer great pain resulting from sitting too long, severe depression resulting from overloaded work. Additionally, with the advancement of technology, more and more fossil fuels are putting into use to operate the industries. As a result, this revolution has brought about heavy air pollution and soil erosion. For instance, the exposure to toxic gas has led to more possibilities of cancer. And also, the grains planted in the soil have been polluted by sewage make people easier to get sick.

Despite the availability of modern healthcare facilities, organic food, and increased health awareness, I contend that maintaining good health is more challenging today than in the past. One contributing factor is the overwhelming workload and pressure experienced by individuals in contemporary society. Striving for better lives often leads to physical and mental health issues, such as pain from prolonged sitting or severe depression from excessive work demands.

Moreover, technological advancements have led to an increased reliance on fossil fuels to power industries, resulting in significant environmental consequences. For example, air pollution from industrial emissions increases the risk of cancer due to exposure to toxic gases. Additionally, soil erosion and contamination from sewage can affect crop quality, making it more likely for people to fall ill from consuming polluted produce. (132 words)

In my opinion, it is easier for people to keep healthy in modern society. Now, it is commonly believed that advanced medical technology and healthier lifestyles can improve people's lifespan effectively. To be more specific, there are all kinds of medicines are being launched into the markets and hospitals, and lots of scientists are devoting themselves into developing innovative technologies to tackle complicated illnesses like cancer. Besides, with the rising awareness of healthy lifestyles, people tend to cultivate healthier habits such as engaging in daily exercises and eating organic food. With more nutritious food available and various physical activities, people's living conditions are believed to improve dramatically. However, some argue that it is easier for people to stay healthy in the past since people exercised more and ate less processed food. Ironically, it is believed that the death rate remained high in the past days due to poor medical facilities and limited types of food. Therefore, modern development has indeed improved our living conditions in many crucial ways.
