Verbal and Nonverbal Communication When we speak with other people face-to-face the nonverbal signals we give—our facial expressions, hand gestures, body movements, and tone of voice—often communicate as much as, or more than, the words we utter. When our nonverbal signals, which we often produce unconsciously, agree with our verbal message, the verbal message is enhanced and supported, made more convincing. But when they conflict with the verbal message, we may be communicating an entirely different and more accurate message than what we intend.

5.Language UseOriginal: In this lecture, we explain that verbal and non-verbal communication can affect each other, and when they are in contact, the non-verbal communication is more effective. The lecturer, Professor Gates, has a private personal experience to explain this concept. First, when he saw his uncle come, he was very happy, and his sister gave his uncle the signal, he was happy, and his uncle can feel these signals. And the second example is when he told her daughter to nurse some hammer and snails, but his daughter cannot catch with her. But he just said to her daughter, it's okay, but his face is pain, and his head trembles. Her daughter can feel his pain.
Corrected: In this lecture(replace "we explain" with "it is explained"), it is explained that verbal and non-verbal communication can affect each other, and when they are in contact, the non-verbal communication is more effective. The lecturer, Professor Gates, uses a personal experience to illustrate this concept. First, when he saw his uncle arrive(replace "come" with "arrive"), he was very happy, and his reaction showed his uncle how happy he was(rephrase for clarity). His uncle could feel these signals. The second example is when he told his daughter to use a hammer and nails(replace "nurse some hammer and snails" with "use a hammer and nails"), but she couldn't keep up with him(replace "cannot catch with her" with "couldn't keep up with him"). He told her it was okay, but his face showed pain, and his hand trembled(replace "head trembles" with "hand trembled"). His daughter could sense his pain.
Revised Answer (140 words):
In this lecture, it is explained that verbal and non-verbal communication can affect each other, and when they are in harmony, non-verbal communication can be more effective. The lecturer, Professor Gates, uses a personal experience to illustrate this concept. When he saw his uncle arrive unexpectedly, he was overjoyed, and his reaction clearly conveyed his happiness to his uncle. His uncle could feel these positive signals. In the second example, he was teaching his daughter how to use a hammer and nails. Although she struggled to keep up with him, he reassured her that everything was fine. However, his facial expression showed pain, and his hand trembled due to an injury. Despite his verbal reassurance, his daughter could sense his pain through non-verbal cues. These examples demonstrate the importance of non-verbal communication in conveying emotions and messages effectively.

23. 3.Delivery
The speaker's delivery is generally clear and fluid, but there are some occasional pauses that could be improved. To enhance the delivery, the speaker should practice speaking with a more consistent pace and reduce unnecessary pauses. Additionally, working on pronunciation will help to eliminate any spelling errors that may have resulted from inaccurate pronunciation.
4.Topic Development The response is coherent and well-organized, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples. However, there is room for improvement in terms of providing more detailed explanations of the examples given. The speaker could elaborate on how the nonverbal communication in each example either supported or conflicted with the verbal message being conveyed. By doing so, the response would better illustrate the relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication.
5.Language UseThe professor gives examples of verbal and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication is with words, while non-verbal communication is using facial expressions, hand gestures, body movement, and tone of voice in order to give a more accurate message. For the first example the professor gives, he talks about meeting his Uncle Pete. Now, he really likes Uncle Pete, and so he said something like, Uncle Pete, what a surprise! "Uncle Pete! What a surprise!" (Removed the comma for a more natural flow) At the same time, his body movement was really, really happy. His eyes got wide, he broke into a huge smile, jumping up and down like a little boy. and jumped up and down like an excited child. (Rephrased for better sentence structure and vocabulary) Now, this shows body movement and the non-verbal communication of happiness. Now, another example he gives is when he was building a birdhouse with his daughter. He accidentally hurt himself and smashed his thumb with the hammer. Now, he said to his daughter, don't worry. However, his facial expression shows that he was very much in pain and his voice was trembling. This non-verbal communication shows that he was in pain. Thus, these two are the examples of non-verbal communication provided.
Revised Answer (140 words):
The professor illustrates the relationship between verbal and non-verbal communication through two examples. In the first example, when meeting his Uncle Pete unexpectedly, the professor expressed happiness verbally by exclaiming "Uncle Pete! What a surprise!" Simultaneously, his non-verbal cues—wide eyes, a huge smile, and jumping up and down like an excited child—reinforced his verbal message. This demonstrated the harmony between verbal and non-verbal communication in conveying genuine happiness. In contrast, the second example involved the professor accidentally hurting himself while building a birdhouse with his daughter. Despite verbally reassuring her that he was fine, his facial expression, trembling voice, and hand-shaking indicated pain. This example highlights how non-verbal cues can contradict verbal messages, revealing the true emotions behind the words spoken.

3.Delivery The speaker's delivery could be improved by focusing on clearer pronunciation and reducing pauses. Additionally, it would be helpful to maintain a consistent pace throughout the response. To improve, the speaker should practice speaking more fluidly and work on enunciating words clearly.
4.Topic Development The speaker's response is generally coherent and well-organized, with clear connections between ideas. However, there is room for improvement in providing more accurate details from the lecture. For example, the speaker should mention that the professor's facial expressions and body language conveyed his happiness when seeing his uncle, and that his daughter could tell he was in pain despite his verbal reassurance. To enhance topic development, the speaker should focus on providing more specific examples from the lecture to support their explanation of the relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication.
5.Language UseOriginal: Verbal communication is an expression or gesture that people produce unconsciously. When it agrees with the nonverbal communication, we're trying to convey a message that is more enhanced and convincing. When it conflicts with the nonverbal communication, we're trying to convey a different or just more accurate message. The professor shared his own experience about the surprise visit of his uncle and what he said totally correspond with what he do. Because according to his wife, his eye was open and his eyes was widened and his mouth was open. Another experience is that he used to play the hammer with the daughter and he kind of smashed the lecturer's hands. It hurts a lot, but the professor won't confess is still conflicts with what he was doing because his hands were shaking. His voice was also trembling.
Corrected: Verbal communication is an expression or gesture that people produce unconsciously. The professor shared his own experience about the surprise visit of his uncle and what he said totally correspond corresponded (past tense needed) with what he do did (past tense needed). Because according to his wife, his eye eyes (plural needed) were open and widened, and his mouth was open. Another experience is that he used to play the hammer with the daughter and he kind of smashed the lecturer's professor's (maintain consistency) hands. It hurt a lot, but the professor won't didn't (past tense needed) confess; it still conflicted with what he was doing because his hands were shaking. His voice was also trembling.
Revised Answer (140 words): Verbal communication consists of expressions or gestures that people produce unconsciously. When it aligns with nonverbal communication, we convey a more enhanced and convincing message. However, when it conflicts with nonverbal communication, we communicate a different or more accurate message. The professor shared his experience of his uncle's surprise visit, and his words corresponded with his actions, as his wife described his eyes widening and mouth opening in surprise. In another example, while building a birdhouse with his daughter, the professor accidentally smashed his thumb with a hammer. Despite verbally reassuring her that he was fine, his nonverbal cues—shaking hands and trembling voice—revealed the truth about his pain. These examples illustrate how verbal and nonverbal communication can either support or contradict each other in conveying messages.

3.表达 在表达方面,发言者的语速较快,有时会出现不恰当的停顿。此外,发言者在发音方面也存在一些错误,导致拼写错误。建议发言者在练习口语时,注意控制语速,适当地停顿,并多加练习发音,以提高口语表达能力。
4.话题发展 In terms of topic development, the speaker's response lacks coherence and organization. The examples from the lecture are mentioned but not clearly explained, and the connection between the examples and the main idea of verbal and nonverbal communication is weak. To improve, the speaker should focus on clearly explaining the examples from the lecture, showing how they illustrate the relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication, and making sure to connect these examples back to the main idea.
5.语言使用Original Answer: The article suggests that in verbal conversation, a non-verbal communication also acts to press the message. The professor also gave two examples about this. First is last week his uncle came to his house and he acted very surprised by the ice slide or something else. Later, his wife told him that she is very amazed by his surprise action. A second example is a few days ago he built a birdhouse with his six-year-old daughter and he stung her. But he didn't want to make his daughter upset, so he told his daughter that he is okay. But he thinks his daughter didn't believe him by his wife's shock.
Corrected Answer: The reading passage suggests that in face-to-face conversations, nonverbal communication plays a significant role in conveying messages. The professor provided two examples to illustrate this point. The first example was when his uncle visited him unexpectedly, and he expressed genuine surprise and happiness through facial expressions and body language. Later, his wife mentioned how amazed she was by his reaction. In the second example, while building a birdhouse with his six-year-old daughter, he accidentally hurt himself but tried to reassure her that he was fine. However, his nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language, contradicted his words, making it difficult for her to believe him. (在这个修正后的答案中,我们使用了更自然、更准确的表达方式,同时对原文中的错误进行了纠正。例如,将“ice slide”改为“facial expressions and body language”,将“stung her”改为“hurt himself”。)
Revised Answer (140 words):
The reading passage highlights the importance of nonverbal communication in face-to-face conversations, as it often conveys more information than verbal messages. The professor's lecture provides two examples that demonstrate this relationship. In the first example, the professor's genuine surprise and happiness upon seeing his uncle were expressed through his facial expressions and body language, which his wife later commented on. This nonverbal communication reinforced the verbal message of his excitement. In the second example, the professor accidentally hurt himself while building a birdhouse with his daughter. Despite verbally reassuring her that he was fine, his facial expressions and body language contradicted his words, making it difficult for her to believe him. These examples illustrate how nonverbal communication can either support or conflict with verbal messages, ultimately affecting the overall message being conveyed.

With his gesture and his eyes, facial expressions, his uncle says he feels very happy to see his face and his nonverbal expressions, which enhances his words. Then, he gave us another opposite example for nonverbal expressions example illustrating conflicting nonverbal cues (Clarified meaning and improved phrasing).
Revised Answer (140 words):
The professor in the lecture uses two specific examples to illustrate the relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication. In the first example, he describes how his facial expressions and body language conveyed genuine happiness when he unexpectedly saw his uncle Pete. His nonverbal cues, such as wide eyes and a big smile, reinforced the verbal message of excitement and surprise. This made his words more convincing and showed his uncle how happy he was to see him.
In contrast, the second example demonstrates how conflicting nonverbal cues can undermine a verbal message. When the professor accidentally hurt himself while building a birdhouse with his daughter, he tried to reassure her verbally that he was fine. However, his pained facial expression, trembling voice, and hand shaking contradicted his words, causing his daughter to doubt his reassurance. This example highlights the importance of nonverbal communication in conveying the true meaning behind our words.
