This week we've been looking at how urban planners design public spaces in cities to meet societal needs. One recent trend is to create more bicycle lanes on city streets. Proponents applaud the increase of lanes for bicycle riders. However, some people disagree with the idea that more bicycle lanes are needed. For today's discussion board, please express your opinion about this topic. Should city planners create more dedicated lanes for bicycle riders to use? Why or why not?

Claire

I think city planners should create more lanes for bicycle riders. Like me, many people do not have a car, and taking public transportation is inconvenient, so riding a bicycle would be a good alternative.

Andrew

I disagree with Claire. It's true that many cities are congested with automobile traffic. But reducing the number of automobile lanes could make this worse and lead to more traffic jams. Because people often travel long distances, it will be impossible to convince them to ride bicycles instead of driving, so only very few people will use bicycle lanes.

Personally, I hold the same opinion as Andrew's idea that it is unnecessary for planners to create more dedicated lanes. It seems Claire's idea deserves to be considered. However, it cannot be achieved. As the development of modern cities, the more areas will be occupied with constructing more buildings by city planners, cities will become larger than before. Meanwhile, many working places have already been moved out of the city center due to the expensive rents of land or the requirements of the government. Hence, people have a longer commute distance than before to reach their working places. As a result, people would be reluctant to ride bicycles. Beyond this, instead of creating dedicated lanes, the government can use money effectively in other social welfare activities, such as improving the health care of the public.

Section Title: 6 文章修订

In response to the professor's question, I concur with Andrew's stance that creating additional dedicated bicycle lanes may not be the most effective solution. While Claire's perspective is valid, the feasibility of her suggestion is questionable. With the expansion of modern cities and the construction of new buildings, urban areas are becoming increasingly larger. Consequently, many workplaces have relocated from city centers due to high land costs or government regulations, resulting in longer commutes for individuals. This factor alone may deter people from opting for bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. Furthermore, instead of allocating resources to establish dedicated bicycle lanes, governments could invest in alternative social welfare initiatives such as enhancing public healthcare systems. Personally, In response to the professor's question (clarifies the context), I hold concur with Andrew's stance (more formal) that creating additional dedicated bicycle lanes may not be the same opinion as Andrew's idea that it most effective solution (clearer expression). In today's rapidly advancing society, governments are increasingly prioritizing measures to enhance citizens' quality of life. I strongly advocate for the implementation of car-free central zones, as this would significantly improve the environmental conditions within these areas, making them cleaner and more comfortable. The presence of numerous vehicles in city centers contributes to air pollution through the release of carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions, while also generating excessive noise. By restricting vehicular access to central zones, governments can effectively promote a more pleasant and relaxing atmosphere for individuals while simultaneously alleviating environmental pressures. 3. Task completeness

The essay addresses the topic of creating more dedicated lanes for bicycle riders, expressing a clear opinion in favor of the idea. However, the essay could be improved by providing more relevant examples and details to support the viewpoint. Additionally, it would be helpful to address the counterarguments presented by Student B (Andrew) in a more direct manner.

Example 1: Instead of focusing on a personal anecdote about your uncle, you could provide statistics or research findings that show how dedicated bicycle lanes have led to a decrease in accidents and improved safety for cyclists.

Example 2: To address Andrew's concern about traffic congestion, you could mention studies that demonstrate how increased bicycle usage can actually reduce overall traffic congestion by encouraging people to use alternative modes of transportation.

4. Essay structure and organization

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it lacks clear transitions between ideas and paragraphs. The organization could be improved by focusing each paragraph on a specific point with supporting details.

Example 1: In your introduction, briefly mention both Claire's and Andrew's viewpoints before stating your own opinion. This will help set up the context for your response.

Example 2: When discussing the benefits of dedicated bicycle lanes, use clear transition phrases like "Firstly," "Additionally," or "Moreover" to guide the reader through your arguments. This will make your essay easier to follow and understand.

As population density increases, so does the demand for bicycles as a mode of transportation. I concur with the notion of creating more dedicated lanes for bicycle riders, as a lack of such lanes often leads to accidents during peak traffic hours. For example, my uncle Jack used to ride his bicycle to the subway in an attempt to save time. Unfortunately, one day a car trailing behind him sped up in an effort to save time as well, resulting in an accident involving my uncle. This incident prompted traffic authorities to pay closer attention to similar situations and implement measures to prevent further accidents. Consequently, the roads have become significantly safer than before. Therefore, city planners should prioritize the creation of more dedicated lanes for bicycle riders to use in order to protect them from potential accidents.

In light of Andrew's concerns, I find myself agreeing with Claire that constructing additional bike lanes would be advantageous. Contrary to exacerbating traffic congestion as Andrew suggests, increasing bike lanes is more likely to alleviate it. Specifically, by segregating bicycles and automobiles into separate lanes, cars can undoubtedly move more swiftly as they are no longer impeded by slower-moving bicycles sharing the same road.

Moreover, an expansion of bike lanes would incentivize individuals who wish to adopt a more eco-friendly mode of transportation but are deterred by the lack of safe cycling infrastructure. Improved air quality would be an added benefit as more people opt for cycling over driving. Insufficient bike lanes in urban areas may lead to apprehension regarding potential accidents due to disorganized transportation systems. Consequently, the presence of well-designed bike lanes would assuage these concerns and encourage a greater number of people to embrace cycling as a viable means of commuting. (157 words)

In the context of crowded urban traffic situation, there is a debate regarding the idea of creating car-free central zones. As for me, I concur with Claire's point of establishing car- free central zones. First, more people are likely to choose public transportations such as subways to get to work. In this way, less private cars will appear in the streets so that they can produce less toxic gases and fresh air environment is granateed. Also, people will not take risks linked to respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer. Second, precious chance for using extra time to finish work on the fly also matters. To be specific, car-free central zones avoid traffic jam so that people will not get stuck on their way to work. Thus, valuable time can be saved and they can finish work quickly.

In the context of congested urban traffic, the concept of establishing car-free central zones has sparked considerable debate. Personally, I agree with Claire's stance on implementing such zones. Firstly, more individuals would likely opt for public transportation options like subways for their daily commute. Consequently, fewer private vehicles would be on the roads, resulting in reduced emissions and improved air quality. This would also decrease the risk of respiratory illnesses such as asthma and lung cancer. Secondly, car-free central zones can provide individuals with additional time to complete tasks during their commute. Specifically, by avoiding traffic congestion, people will not be delayed en route to work, thus saving valuable time and increasing productivity. (116 words)

I concur with Claire that dedicated lanes for bicycle riders could provide an alternative transportation choice. In addition, riding bikes also could be beneficial for individuals' physical health. To be more specific, reaserches suggest that people who regularly ride bicycle have less prospects to suffer from hear-attacks, obesity and other diseases. Andrew raised a relevant argument that more dedicated bycicle lanes may contribute to more traffic jams. However, he ignores the fact that, as the dedicated bycicle lanes bring more bike riders on the road, car drivers may be more careful when driving. This can result in decreaced number of accidents caused by the distracted drivers, and ultimately reduce the traffic jams related to such incidents.

3. Task completeness

The essay does a good job of addressing the task requirements by expressing an opinion, supporting it with relevant arguments, and responding to the points made by Claire and Andrew. However, there is room for improvement in elaborating on the viewpoint and providing more specific examples or details to strengthen the argument.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Provide more concrete examples of how dedicated bicycle lanes can benefit cities.

  • Discuss potential solutions to address Andrew's concern about traffic congestion.

Examples:

  1. "In cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, where dedicated bicycle lanes are prevalent, there has been a significant reduction in air pollution levels due to fewer cars on the road."
  2. "To address concerns about traffic congestion, city planners could implement strategies such as creating separate bike paths away from roads or using underutilized spaces for bike lanes."

4. Essay structure and organization

The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both Claire's and Andrew's points, and a conclusion. However, the organization could be improved by using clearer transitions between ideas and paragraphs.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use transition words or phrases to connect ideas within paragraphs.

  • Make sure each paragraph focuses on one main point.

Examples:

  1. "While Andrew raises a valid concern about traffic congestion, it is important to consider that..."
  2. "Furthermore, promoting bicycle use can have positive environmental impacts by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles."

I concur with Paul that the construction of central car-free zone can bring a lot of troubles. To be more specific, as many companies are situated in downtown areas, great number of employees will suffer from commute even more badly without transportaion. If the plan goes through, they are supposed to get up earlier to prevent being late for work, which definitely diminish their working experience. On the other hand, I disagree with Claire’s viewpoint that car-free zone helps residents to incorporate exercise into people’s routines. It might be true that people are inforced to walk or cycle more. However, there are a lot of other ways to encourage people to do physical activity in much lower cost, like the construction of bicycle lanes.

I agree with Paul that the implementation of car-free central zones may pose significant challenges. Specifically, many businesses are located in downtown areas, and a large number of employees could face difficulties in commuting without access to transportation. If this plan is enacted, they would be forced to wake up earlier to avoid being late for work, which could negatively impact their overall work experience.

On the other hand, I disagree with Claire's assertion that car-free zones would effectively encourage residents to incorporate exercise into their daily routines. While it is true that people might be compelled to walk or cycle more, there are alternative methods to promote physical activity at a lower cost, such as constructing dedicated bicycle lanes. I strongly agree with Paul that public schools should introduce some new courses, in 21st century, peoples opinion about learning has changed, from the “old version” of learning, which students just have to remember things and read books, to the version that’s more interesting and creative. For those curriculums that students take, they have to benefit from it, learning, obtaining knowledge and meanwhile having some fun. I indeed agree with Kelly that the aim of high school is to prepare students for higher education, but the learning style of course can be changed, they can add classes that fulfill student’s interest, while it didn’t interrupt other classes that the student should take. As a student myself, I prefer having classes like media and other classes that supports my interest, and it indeed can benefit me. It didn’t stop me from learning those courses that I must take, like math or science, conversely, it helped me a lot during my school times to enhance my hobby.

I wholeheartedly concur with Paul's assertion that public schools ought to incorporate novel courses into their curricula. In the 21st century, educational paradigms have shifted from a traditional, rote learning approach to one that fosters creativity and engagement. Consequently, it is essential for schools to offer subjects that not only impart knowledge but also pique students' interests. While I acknowledge Kelly's argument that high school education primarily serves as a foundation for higher learning, I contend that incorporating diverse and stimulating courses will not impede students' progress in core subjects such as mathematics or science. On the contrary, offering classes tailored to individual interests can significantly enhance a student's overall educational experience. Speaking from personal experience, I found that pursuing subjects like media studies alongside mandatory courses greatly enriched my academic journey and contributed to the development of my passions and hobbies. I believe that the car-free zone is not a good idea, because cars are one of the most important vehicle in cities and a car-free zone may cause more problems than the problems it deals. For example, a car-free zone may cause inconvenient for the people who want to go to the city center. To elaborate, modern cities are always very big and the employees of the companies which locate in the city center may live distance from the city center, so they need to drive their private cars to work. If there is a car-free zone in the city center, they may have to take public transportation to their works and spend more time. What’s more, many big shopping malls and supermarkets are setting up in the city center. A car-free zone means that the customers have to park their cars out of the car-free zone which may cause some traffic issue even worse.

While I understand the potential health benefits of establishing car-free central zones, I believe that implementing such a policy may lead to more problems than it solves. One major issue is the inconvenience it would cause for individuals who rely on their cars to commute to work in city centers. Modern urban areas are often expansive, and employees working in central locations may reside far from their workplaces. Consequently, they depend on their private vehicles for transportation. If a car-free zone were introduced, these individuals would be forced to use public transit, which could result in longer commutes.

Additionally, many large shopping centers and supermarkets are situated in city centers. Implementing a car-free zone would require customers to park their vehicles outside the designated area, potentially exacerbating traffic congestion near the periphery of the zone. This could lead to increased frustration for both residents and visitors alike.

Furthermore, businesses located within the car-free zone might suffer from reduced patronage as customers who are unable or unwilling to use alternative modes of transportation may choose not to visit these establishments at all. This could have significant economic repercussions for local shops and restaurants.

In light of these concerns, I propose that urban planners consider alternative solutions for promoting health and reducing traffic congestion without resorting to the creation of car-free zones. Such alternatives might include investing in improved public transportation infrastructure or developing pedestrian-friendly areas within city centers while still allowing access for vehicles when necessary.
