TOEFL 2026 Score Scale at a Glance

The TOEFL 2026 uses a 1.0–6.0 band scale. Your overall band is the simple average of four equally weighted section scores — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — each scored on the same 1.0–6.0 scale in 0.5 increments. This replaced the legacy 0–120 total score on January 21, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TOEFL 2026 scoring scale?
The TOEFL iBT 2026 uses a 1–6 band scale in 0.5 increments. Each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) receives a band score from 1.0 to 6.0, and the overall score is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest 0.5. Band 6.0 is the highest possible score.
How do I calculate my overall TOEFL 2026 score?
Add your four section scores (Reading + Listening + Speaking + Writing) and divide by 4. Round the result to the nearest 0.5. For example: 4.0 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 4.0 = 16.0 ÷ 4 = 4.0 overall. Use the Score Calculator above to do this automatically.
What TOEFL score do I need for a US university?
Most QS top 100 US universities require an overall band of 4.0–4.5 (equivalent to roughly 80–90 on the old scale). Highly selective schools typically require 5.0 or above. Use the University Admission Calculator to look up the exact requirement for your target school or to find all schools that match your score.
How does TOEFL 2026 compare to IELTS?
TOEFL 2026 Band 4.0 ≈ IELTS 6.0, Band 4.5 ≈ IELTS 6.5, Band 5.0 ≈ IELTS 7.0, Band 5.5 ≈ IELTS 7.5, and Band 6.0 ≈ IELTS 8.5+. These are approximate equivalencies based on ETS score comparison research. Use the TOEFL Score Converter for a full comparison table including CEFR levels.
What is a good TOEFL 2026 score?
A band of 4.0 meets most university minimums. A band of 4.5–5.0 is competitive for top graduate programs. Band 5.5–6.0 is considered excellent and satisfies requirements at virtually all universities. See the What Is a Good TOEFL Score? guide for benchmarks and an instant verdict on your score. To plan a path to a higher band, try the Score Gap Planner.
Are these score tools official?
No. These are estimation and reference tools to help you plan your preparation. They are not affiliated with ETS or the official TOEFL program. Always verify score requirements directly with the admissions office of your target institution.
