Transient lunar phenomena (TLP) are relatively brief flashes of light that appear to come from the surface of the Moon. Such flashes of light have been observed for centuries by both amateur and professional astronomers, and several theories have been put forward to explain them. One theory is that TLP are not genuine lunar phenomena, but only random observational errors caused by defects in the telescopes some observers use. Optical instruments such as telescopes or microscopes are complex pieces of machinery; even small flaws in their design can create artificial optical impressions like flashes or other distortions in the visual field. To an observer, a flash of light caused by an instrument error may sometimes look like a real phenomenon taking place in nature. A second theory is that meteors striking the Moon cause TLP. Because the Moon has no atmosphere, meteors often reach the lunar surface. In fact, meteors strike the Moon every day. According to the meteor theory, when meteors strike the lunar surface, they explode, creating enough heat energy to appear as a flash of light to observers on Earth. When people observe TLP, they are actually observing flashes of light generated by meteor impacts. A third theory is that TLP are the result of lunar rocks emitting their own light by a process called thermoluminescence. It is known that the Moon does in fact contain certain rocks that are capable of generating light in this way when they are heated by the Sun. This is strong empirical support that TLP are caused by thermoluminescence.

The theories behind transient lunar phenomena, brief flashes of light coming from the Moon surface, is the central theme of both the reading and listening materials. In the passage, three explanations, including observational errors, striking meteors, and lunar rocks, have been elaborated. The lecture, however, casts doubt on these theories by claiming that those theories cannot explain TLP. To start, according to the article, small flaws in telescopes may lead to artificial flashes. Nevertheless, the professor disputes the line of reasoning by assuming that there were definitely random locations reported along with random observations triggered by optical flaws. Additionally, he cites merely two specific places found in the Moon surface as evidence, indicating that TLP are virtually real phenomena. Furthermore, as opposed to the author's assertion that meteors striking the Moon may serve as another cause, the lecturer points out that although meteors do create flashes when striking the Moon, they only generate flashes within one second, whereas TLP last around 20 minutes. Consequently, there must be another reasons behind TLP. Lastly, it is the professor's third argument that some lunar rocks emit light much weaker than the flashes observed, which contradicts with the writer's point that the emitting process, thermoluminescence explains TLP. To illustrate, the professor mentions that the Moon's light we have observed is actually the reflection of sunlight, suggesting that TLP is required to be brighter than that to be observed.

3.Task completeness The essay effectively summarizes the points made in the lecture and explains how they challenge the specific theories presented in the reading passage. However, there is room for improvement in providing more detailed explanations and using more accurate language to convey the lecturer's arguments.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Elaborate on the lecturer's arguments by providing more context or examples.

  • Use more precise language to accurately convey the lecturer's points.

Examples:

  1. Instead of "the professor disputes the line of reasoning by assuming that there were definitely random locations reported along with random observations triggered by optical flaws," consider writing "the professor disputes this theory by pointing out that if it were true, TLP reports would be random across the Moon's surface; however, most TLP reports come from two specific locations, suggesting a genuine lunar phenomenon."

  2. Instead of "TLP is required to be brighter than that to be observed," write "the light emitted through thermoluminescence would not be visible against the bright background of reflected sunlight."

4.Essay structure and organization The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point, and there are clear transitions between ideas and paragraphs. However, some sentences could be restructured for better clarity and coherence.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Ensure each sentence is clear and concise.

  • Improve transitions between ideas within paragraphs.

Examples:

  1. Instead of "Nevertheless, the professor disputes the line of reasoning by assuming that there were definitely random locations reported along with random observations triggered by optical flaws," write "However, the professor disputes this theory by pointing out that if it were true, TLP reports would be random across the Moon's surface."

  2. Instead of "Consequently, there must be another reasons behind TLP," write "Therefore, the duration of TLP suggests that other factors are responsible for these phenomena."

The debate surrounding the causes of Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLP) is addressed by both the author and the lecturer. The author presents three possible explanations for TLP, including observational errors in telescopes, meteors striking the Moon, and lunar rocks emitting light through thermoluminescence. However, the lecturer disputes each of these theories.

Challenging the notion that TLP is caused by observational errors in telescopes, the lecturer asserts that if this were true, TLP observations would be random due to flaws in telescope design. Instead, she highlights that most observers report TLP from two specific locations on the Moon's surface, suggesting that TLP reflects genuine lunar events rather than telescope defects.

The lecturer further disputes the author's claim that meteors striking the Moon cause TLP by examining the difference in duration of light flashes. She emphasizes that meteor impact flashes last only one second while TLPs persist for an average of 20 minutes. Additionally, she notes that most TLPs are not reported during meteor showers, indicating that although some may be due to meteor impacts, a majority of TLPs likely have alternative causes.

Lastly, the lecturer contradicts the author's theory of thermoluminescence causing TLP by arguing that lunar rocks emit light too weak compared to the glare of the Moon's surface when heated by the Sun. Consequently, she contends that thermoluminescence would be overshadowed by brighter reflected light from the Moon and therefore cannot be considered as a plausible source for observed TLP flashes. In the reading material, the author provides three theories that account for the Transient lunar phenomena (TLP), which are relative brief flashes of light from the surface of the Moon. However, the professor disputes each theory in the lecture. Firstly, the author introduces a theory that TLP are not lunar phenomena, but random observational errors caused by flaws of the optical telescopes. This is demurred by the professor who states that TLP reports would become random should TLP randomly happen. The professor further demonstrates that there are two specific locations on the Moon surface being reported, which makes the first theory unconvincing. In addition, the second theory that meteors' striking the Moon causes TLP is also counteracted by the professor. He highlights the duration of the two phenomena — metors strikes the Moon in one second, while TLP lasts for twenty minutes. Although there may be multiple meteors crashing on the Moon at the same time, the substancial duration difference disagrees with the theory. Finally, the author claims a third theory that TLP result from lunar rocks' thermoluminescence. Some rocks from the Moon can generate light when heated by the Sun. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this by stating that the light emitted by thermoluminescence process is quite weak compared to those reflected from the Sun. Observing such light among the Sun reflection light is like capturing candle flames from the powerful spotlight. Therefore, the third theory is also unsatisfactory.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

In the reading material, the author presents three theories to explain Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLP), which are brief flashes of light observed on the Moon's surface. However, the professor in the lecture challenges each of these theories.

Firstly, the author suggests that TLP may not be genuine lunar phenomena but rather random observational errors caused by defects in optical telescopes. The professor refutes this idea by pointing out that if TLP were merely due to telescope flaws, reports of TLP would be random and widespread across the Moon's surface. However, most observers report TLP from two specific locations on the Moon, indicating that they likely represent real events occurring on its surface rather than telescope errors.

Secondly, the reading posits that meteor impacts on the Moon could cause TLP. The professor counters this theory by emphasizing the significant difference in duration between meteor impacts and TLP events – meteor flashes typically last only one second, while TLP events have an average duration of 20 minutes. Although meteor showers could potentially cause longer-lasting light flashes, most TLP reports do not coincide with such showers. Thus, while some TLP might be attributable to meteor impacts, this explanation does not account for the majority of observed events.

Lastly, the author proposes that thermoluminescence from lunar rocks could be responsible for TLP. While it is true that certain rocks on the Moon can emit light when heated by sunlight through thermoluminescence, the professor disputes this theory as well. He explains that such emitted light is much weaker than sunlight reflected off the Moon's surface and would therefore be virtually impossible to detect against this bright background – akin to trying to see a candle flame in front of a powerful spotlight. Consequently, thermoluminescence cannot adequately explain observed TLP events either. (299 words)

meteor impact/'miːtiər 'ɪmpækt/NounThe collision of a meteor with another celestial body, such as the Moon.陨石撞击The reading suggests that meteor impacts could be responsible for some TLP events.
thermoluminescence/ˌθɜrməluːmɪ'nɛsəns/NounThe emission of light from a substance when it is heated, especially in response to prior exposure to radiation.热释光现象The author proposes that thermoluminescence from lunar rocks could cause TLP.
duration/djʊ'reɪʃən/NounThe length of time that something continues or lasts.持续时间There is a significant difference in duration between meteor flashes and TLP events.
meteor shower/'miːtiər 'ʃaʊər/NounA celestial event in which multiple meteors are observed to radiate from one point in the night sky.流星雨Most TLP reports do not coincide with meteor showers, making this explanation less likely.
detectable/dɪ'tektəbl/AdjectiveAble to be discovered or noticed through observation or analysis.可检测的The light emitted by thermoluminescence would not be easily detectable against the bright lunar surface background.
