Panoramica del Task

Testo di Lettura

Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt.First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency.Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow-which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error. Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood. For these reasons the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt’s paintings in the 1930s.

Both the passage and the lecture address the issue about whether the painting of a woman's face is drawn by Rembrandt. In the reading, the author proclaims that such a piece is not drawn by Rembrandt while the lecturer contradicts this view by providing three specific reasons. First and foremost, the reading states that the inconsistency of the clothes in the portrait is contradictory with Rembrandt's style of carefulness because the woman is dressed with both an expensive fur collar and a linen cap which is only seen from servants. However, the lecturer argues that a recent research conducted on this portrait revealed that the inconsistent collar was drawn by later painters who wanted to increase the value of the portrait by wrapping it as a precious portrait of a real loyal lady. Moreover, the reading maintains that the illumination on woman's face doesn't fit with the light reflected by the fur collar, which is absolute not Rembrandt's style due to his expertise in painting light and shadow. Nevertheless, the lecturer doubts the view by stating that after removing the later added collar to recover the original piece, the woman is actually wearing light-colored clothes. In this way, the illumination on woman's face is accurately depicted since there is reflection from the clothes with light color. Last but not least, the reading material holds the belief that true pieces of Rembrandt are always painted on a single wood panels, rather than a panel made of many pieces of glued wood as this portrait does. The professor in the lecturer, on the contrary, points out that this portrait of woman is initially drawn on one panel. All the other glued woods are attached by the person who added the collar onto the portrait. The professor defends her own point by further explaining that research found out that the wood used in this portrait is actually from the same tree with another true piece of Rembrandt, which adds into the evidence.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The passage and the lecture both discuss the authenticity of a painting attributed to Rembrandt, with the passage arguing against its legitimacy and the lecture providing evidence to support its authenticity. The lecturer refutes three main points made in the reading passage.

Firstly, the reading claims that there is an inconsistency in the subject's clothing, as she wears both a servant's linen cap and an expensive fur collar. This would be uncharacteristic of Rembrandt's attention to detail. However, the lecturer counters this by stating that recent research has shown that the fur collar was added later by another painter to increase the portrait's value, making it appear as a formal portrait of an aristocratic lady.

Secondly, the passage asserts that Rembrandt's mastery of light and shadow is not evident in this painting due to inconsistencies between the woman's illuminated face and her dark fur collar. The lecturer disputes this by explaining that once the added fur collar was removed, it revealed a light-colored cloth collar underneath which would reflect light onto her face. Thus, in its original form, the painting does display Rembrandt's skillful use of light and shadow.

Lastly, according to the reading, authentic Rembrandt paintings are always on single wood panels rather than multiple glued pieces like this portrait. Contradicting this point, the lecturer states that initially, this painting was on a single panel but was enlarged with additional pieces when the fur collar was added. Furthermore, researchers discovered that the wood used for this portrait came from the same tree as another confirmed Rembrandt painting.

In conclusion, despite initial doubts about its authenticity due to inconsistencies in clothing style and lighting as well as panel construction mentioned in reading passage; further examination presented by lecture provides compelling evidence supporting that "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet" is indeed a genuine work by Rembrandt. While the reading demonstrates three problems with a painting that suggest the painting could not be a work by Rembrandt, the lecturer put forward three explanation to deal with the problems mentioned in the reading. To begin with, the author points out that the luxurious fur collar contradict with the identity of the servant woman. Nevertheless, the speaker retorts this by mentioning that scholars have analyzed the color and pigment used on the painting and found that the fur collar is not a part of the original painting of Rembrandt. Indeed, the fur collar is over top of the painting in order to increase the status of the painting and to make the lady in the painting look more formal. Another point proposed by the reading passage is that the light and shadow in the painting do not fit together which is an impossible error made by Rembrandt. Conversely, the professor argues that since the fur collar is not the original part of the painting, removing the collar rightly make the painting's light congruent since the light of original collar illuminate the woman's face. Finally, the writer concedes that the painting was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together while among Rembrandt's work no painting was used a panel glued together from several pieces of wood. However, the lecturer refutes this by claiming that some people have enlarge the painting to make it look more grand, and original painting was actually painted on a single piece of wood. Moreover, scholars have found that the wood used for the painting and another painting of Rembrandt were from the same tree.

The reading passage presents three issues with a painting that casts doubt on its attribution to Rembrandt. However, the lecture provides explanations for each of these concerns, ultimately supporting the claim that the painting is indeed a work by Rembrandt.

Firstly, the reading passage highlights an inconsistency in the woman's attire, featuring a luxurious fur collar and a white linen cap typically worn by servants. The lecturer counters this argument by stating that further analysis revealed the fur collar was not part of Rembrandt's original painting. Thus, in its original form, the painting exhibits realistic light and shadow consistent with Rembrandt's style.

Lastly, while the writer argues that Rembrandt never used wood panels glued together from several pieces as found in this painting, the lecturer refutes this point by explaining that additional wood pieces were added when enlarging the panel to increase its grandeur and value. The original painting was actually on a single piece of wood - consistent with other works by Rembrandt. Section Title: 6. Revised Essay

The reading passage contends that some paintings attributed to Rembrandt may not have been his work, particularly one featuring a woman. Conversely, the lecturer provides compelling evidence to support the assertion that this painting was indeed created by Rembrandt, effectively refuting the reading passage's claims.

Firstly, the inconsistency in the woman's attire can be explained through pigment analysis. This analysis reveals that the luxurious fur collar was added to the painting approximately 100 years after its initial creation. It is likely that this modification was made to increase the painting's value by presenting it as a formal portrait of an aristocratic lady. In its original form, however, the woman's clothing is consistent and coherent.

Furthermore, the supposed discrepancy in light and shadow can also be attributed to this later addition. When examining the original artwork without the added fur collar, it becomes evident that a light-colored cloth collar beneath the woman's face reflects light onto her features in a natural and realistic manner. This illumination is consistent with Rembrandt's signature style.

Lastly, historical analysis of the wood panel on which this painting was created offers additional support for its attribution to Rembrandt. It has been discovered that this panel originates from the same tree as another known Rembrandt piece - his Self-Portrait with a Hat. This connection strengthens the argument for Rembrandt's authorship of both works.

In summary, persuasive and detailed evidence has been presented to confirm that this painting was indeed created by Rembrandt, effectively casting doubt on specific points made in the reading passage. (261 words)
