TOEFL Exam 2025 Overview: Sections, Duration, Tips

What Is the TOEFL?

If you’re new to the TOEFL, welcome to the start of your global academic adventure! 🎓

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test used to measure how well you can use and understand English in an academic setting. It’s accepted by over 11,000 universities and institutions across 160+ countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Most students take the TOEFL iBT, which is the internet-based version. It tests four skills:

  1. Reading
  2. Listening
  3. Speaking
  4. Writing

How Long Is the TOEFL Test in 2025?

Total Duration of TOEFL iBT (2025) 📌

The entire TOEFL iBT test is just under 2 hours—to be precise, about 1 hour and 56 minutes.

Here’s a table that makes it crystal clear:

What Makes the TOEFL Unique?

  • It’s computer-based from start to finish (even Speaking).
  • No separate grammar section—you’re judged on how well grammar is integrated into your answers.
  • Timing is tight but fair—strategy is everything.

And now that it’s shorter than it used to be, your ability to manage time is more important than ever.

TOEFL iBT Sections Breakdown

Reading (35 Minutes)

What you do: Read 2 academic passages and answer 10 questions per passage.

Timing tip: That’s ~17 minutes per passage.

Starter Tip: Don't read every word. Learn to skim for main ideas, then scan for specific answers.

Listening (36 Minutes)

What you do: Listen to university-style conversations and lectures, then answer questions.

Starter Tip: Practice taking notes as you listen—it’s okay if they’re messy. Focus on main ideas, tone, and transitions.

Speaking (16 Minutes)

What you do: Respond to 1 personal question and 3 academic ones. No live interviewer—it’s all recorded.

Starter Tip: Use a structure: Intro → Reason 1 → Example → Reason 2 → Wrap-up.

Even if your accent isn’t perfect, clarity and structure win points.

Writing (29 Minutes)

What you do: You’ll complete two tasks:

1. Integrated Writing Task (approx. 20 mins):

  • Read a short academic passage (3 mins)
  • Listen to a related lecture (2 mins)
  • Write a response summarizing both viewpoints

2. Academic Discussion Task (approx. 9 mins):

  • Read a discussion between students and a professor
  • Add your own post, supporting or challenging their ideas

Starter Tips:

  • For the Integrated task: Focus on the relationship between the reading and the lecture. Paraphrase, don’t copy.
  • For the Academic Discussion: Write like you’re posting in a class forum—clear, thoughtful, and relevant.

Timing breakdown:

  • Task 1 (Integrated): ~20 minutes
  • Task 2 (Academic Discussion): ~9 minutes
