This week, we will be discussing a shortage of affordable housing that exists in many countries. In these places, housing both apartments (flats) and houses--are expensive, because populations are growing faster than new housing is being built. Now, think about places in your country that have a housing shortage. In your post, I would like you to indicate the most effective way for the government to address a housing shortage in your country. Please explain why you think so.
Claire
In my country, there is a lack of affordable housing in the big cities. Low-cost housing exists in areas outside of the cities, but that means workers have long commutes to reach their jobs in the cities. I recommend that my government create initiatives to encourage the construction of large buildings with many affordable apartments in cities.
Paul
Claire's recommendation is fine, but many people prefer to live in a house rather than an apartment, even if they have longer commutes. Living in a house can be quieter and more private. So, I believe my government should give subsidies or tax relief to construction companies to build small, affordable single-family houses on unused land that surrounds many cities.

From my perspective, I agree with Claire’s opinion that the most effective way to decrease the pressure of housing shortage is to build more affordable apartments in cities. When the government invests a lot of money in contract apartments, it can support more sites to let people live in. And the structure of apartments isn't very complex, the government can fund money to build several buildings which can accumulate crowded people. And then this way is very convenient. People live in apartments which just have short distances with company, people can save more time and energy during commute period. For example, my aunt always works hard in a private company. She rents an apartment near her company. She not only saves more money, but also saves a lot of time.

Section Title: Addressing Housing Shortages through Affordable Urban Apartments
In my opinion, the most effective approach to alleviate the housing shortage in urban areas is to construct affordable apartment buildings within cities, as Claire suggested. By investing in the development of cost-effective apartments, the government can provide a greater number of housing options for residents. Apartment buildings typically have a less complex structure than individual houses, allowing for more efficient use of limited urban space and resources. Moreover, living in city apartments offers residents shorter commutes to their workplaces, resulting in significant time and energy savings. For instance, my aunt works diligently at a private company and rents an apartment close to her office. This arrangement not only reduces her living expenses but also saves her valuable time that would otherwise be spent on lengthy commutes. (136 words)

From my perspective, I concur with Paul’s opinion that house plays an increasing significant role in alleviate housing shortage. Nowadays, the housing pricing is in rising trend due to speculate on its price deliberately. In this way, so many individuals could ill afford soaring housing price that they don’t have a stable settlement. However, if governments could provide the welfare that giving buyers subsidies, civilians, especially workers or employees who just start working, would be more likely to afford purchasing a house. It is because financial aid could release their pressure drastically. Therefore, increasing number of inhabitants are able to purchase a own house. For example, when governments offer 20% redress of original housing price for customers, more of them would be encouraged to pay for a house. Eventually, the shortage of housing could be solved.

Section Title: Addressing Housing Shortage through Government Intervention
In my opinion, Paul's suggestion of government subsidies for single-family houses is a more effective approach to addressing the housing shortage. The escalating housing prices, often driven by speculation, have rendered many individuals unable to afford stable accommodations. By offering financial assistance such as subsidies or tax relief to construction companies, governments can encourage the development of affordable single-family homes on unused land surrounding cities. This would particularly benefit workers and employees who are just starting their careers and may struggle with the financial burden of purchasing a house. For instance, if the government were to provide a 20% reduction in the original housing price for buyers, it would incentivize more people to invest in homeownership. Consequently, this approach could significantly alleviate the housing shortage issue. (134 words)

I wholeheartedly with Paul’s perspective that it is vital to share knowledge among scientists. I would like to emphasize that sharing sources of new discoveries help foster a positive relationship which speeds up the development of science. For instance, China suffered a disastrous disease which killed many people in 2019. Ultimately, the disease was controlled by the efforts of collaboration among varies nations. The information of the disease was shared in many countries and then these countries established a global union to overcome the difficulties. Consequently, many people’s lives were saved. While Kelly contends that not all discoveries should be open to the public since they can yield tangible benefit to the companies who discovered it, it is crucial to recognize that independent efforts put in the science research is limited. Combining with other’s could have huger improvements on the discovery and can bring more benefits.

I wholeheartedly agree with Paul's perspective that sharing knowledge among scientists is of paramount importance. I would like to emphasize that disseminating new discoveries fosters a collaborative environment, accelerating scientific advancements. For instance, the 2019 outbreak of a deadly disease in China was eventually controlled through the collaborative efforts of various nations. The information regarding the disease was shared globally, leading to the establishment of an international coalition to tackle the crisis, ultimately saving countless lives.
While Kelly argues that not all discoveries should be publicly disclosed due to potential profits for the companies involved, it is essential to acknowledge that individual contributions to scientific research have inherent limitations. Collaborating with others can significantly enhance a discovery's potential and yield even greater benefits for all parties involved. (130 words)

While I can see Paul's point that it is more acceptable for government to offer financial support to build single-family houses, I partially agree with Claire's perspective that the government should construct affordable apartments in cities, where a large amount of people can live in. As mentioned by Claire, taking long commutes forces people to live in the cities, which means they can save a lot of time. When living in the apartment, people can not only afford cheaper fees but also enjoy a shorter commute time, moreover, they can have access to convenient public transportation in the downtown. Apart from that, I add that the goverment should give subsidies to people who live in the rent apartment. With less cost of renting an apartment, citizens will be willing to live in apartments, which can significantly resolve the shortage of house; on the contrary, even if the officials prodive financilal aids to the single-family houses, it can only have limited impact on the individuals, since merely a small amount of people will live in small house with long commutes time.

Although Paul's suggestion of government support for single-family houses has merit, I believe that Claire's proposal of constructing affordable apartments in urban areas is more effective in addressing the housing shortage. The primary advantage of this approach is the reduction of long commutes for city workers, resulting in significant time savings and improved access to public transportation. Furthermore, by offering subsidies to renters, the government can make urban living more affordable for low-income families, thus encouraging them to move into these apartments and alleviating the housing crisis. While financial aid for single-family houses may benefit some individuals, it would not be as impactful in tackling the overall housing shortage as promoting affordable apartment construction in cities. Paul's standpoint appeals to me more; and besides the reason he put forward, another noticeable one also deserves to be highlighted: sharing all scientific discoveries all around the world would help the development of all human society. Owing to the option, sharing scientific discoveries will enrich the knowledge of scientists all over the world, resulting in more ideas that can be applied to this new discovery; hence, there are more and more creative inventions that will be developed based on the scientific discovery which shared all over the world. In this way, people can improve their living conditions and have higher living standards. For example, the laboratory which I work found a new way to make electronic energy by using earth magnetic field. Then, we putted this important discovery on the website, sharing it with people without charging fee. Then, people living near our city invented a new machine which can produce electric energy in a lower cost, resulting the lower cost for our daily life.

In my opinion, scientific discoveries ought to be shared openly. The dissemination of data, methodologies, and findings among researchers can expedite progress within the scientific community, as it is often challenging for a single scientist to achieve the same results as multiple scientists collaborating. For instance, sharing datasets enables research outcomes to be validated through replication studies, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the research. Furthermore, exchanging scientific discoveries between business professionals and policymakers can foster collaborative efforts that yield more fruitful endeavors.
While both Paul's and Kelly's arguments possess some validity, I firmly believe that they overlook the fundamental essence of scientific research. The primary motivation behind scientific inquiry is the advancement of human society; thus, the ultimate objective is to promote societal progress as a whole. In this context, personal interests or recognition for individual scientists and business professionals become trivial compared to this overarching goal. (150 words)

Paul's suggestion to increase the number of new houses is a valid approach. However, to fundamentally address the housing shortage issue, the government should implement policies that prevent individuals who already own a house or an apartment from purchasing additional properties.
The thriving housing market has led to consistently high prices, making property investment an attractive option for the wealthy. This practice has become a common method for affluent individuals to expand their wealth. As a result, it becomes increasingly difficult for ordinary people, particularly young adults, to find affordable housing options.
By restricting people from purchasing multiple properties, this policy can effectively alleviate the problem. With reduced demand, housing prices will correspondingly decrease. Section Title: Dynamic Pricing for Public Parking
In my opinion, implementing higher fees for parking spaces during peak hours could significantly alleviate traffic congestion. While Andrew argues that this approach may inconvenience car owners and suggests constructing additional parking structures instead, it is essential to consider the broader implications of dynamic pricing. Specifically, in densely populated urban centers where lengthy commutes are a daily challenge, increased parking fees may encourage private vehicle owners to opt for public transportation or alternative modes of travel, ultimately saving them time. Additionally, the revenue generated from these higher fees can be utilized by local authorities to invest in infrastructure improvements. Thus, rather than solely focusing on expanding parking facilities, cities should explore the immediate benefits of dynamic pricing for both citizens and governments. (129 words)

In my perspective, I concur with Claire regarding the importance of outer space exploration. Firstly, the primary motivation behind such exploration is not aimless curiosity but rather the pursuit of valuable resources and knowledge. For instance, the first moon landing yielded invaluable minerals that are incredibly durable and stable, which can be utilized in manufacturing to create more sustainable facilities. Secondly, our solar system's stability is not guaranteed, and unforeseen catastrophes such as comet collisions with Earth could occur. Space exploration offers us an opportunity to ensure humanity's survival in case our planet becomes uninhabitable. 6.文章修订
In my perspective, I concur with Paul's idea that workers prefer houses over apartments for a quieter and more private living experience. Although apartments offer convenience and shorter commutes due to their central location, their prices tend to skyrocket, making them less affordable. Therefore, I suggest that the government construct more houses in the suburbs to maintain reasonable prices while providing a comfortable living environment for workers and their families.
For instance, imagine working in an unfamiliar city and striving for a better life every day; wouldn't you prefer living with your loved ones? I believe most people would answer yes. Building houses in suburban areas not only caters to this preference but also helps control urban sprawl by utilizing unused land surrounding cities.
Moreover, the government can offer subsidies or tax relief to attract workers to these suburban areas. This approach not only addresses the housing shortage but also contributes to creating sustainable communities with a balance between work and family life. By focusing on constructing affordable single-family homes in suburban areas, we can provide a long-term solution to the housing crisis while improving the overall quality of life for citizens. Section Title: Addressing Housing Shortages
In my view, constructing affordable apartments in urban areas is the most effective approach for governments to tackle housing shortages, which aligns with Claire's perspective. Furthermore, I contend that promoting the development of numerous cost-effective apartments not only saves money for residents but also enables efficient land utilization by the government. As a result, people can allocate less of their income towards housing expenses and save more towards purchasing their desired homes. Additionally, the government can repurpose the remaining land for other infrastructural projects, such as shopping malls that enhance recreational opportunities. Although Paul suggests providing subsidies or tax relief to construction companies for building single-family houses on unused land surrounding cities, he overlooks the significant financial burden this would impose on the government, potentially limiting funds available for other purposes. Therefore, constructing affordable apartments in cities is the optimal solution to address housing shortages. (150 words)

In my opinion, I believe the most effective way for the government to address housing shortage is to utilize the use of land and remodify the effectiveness of urban planning. Nowadays along with the continued increase of the city population, people had more demands for suitable housing. For my own example, I have an uncle who live inside a city with high density population, with his lack of income, it’s nearly impossible for him to purchase a house for his whole family. However, in this year, the government started to plan the land in the suburban area of the city. They scheduled new transportations around that area and allocated more resources toward there, like metro routes to connect with city center, this brought a convenient life to the citizens who live nearby. Moreover, they build high quality apartments inside that area, which save a lot of space and fulfill the living needs of an entire family. With the cheap cost of land and the promotion of government, these apartments had affordable prices, and my uncle was now able to buy a new house, without effecting the current quality of his life. In this way, the government solve the problem of housing shortage by having a better plan for urban construction. I disagree with Paul’s idea to let government give subsidies or tax relief to construction companies to build affordable houses, because government couldn’t afford to give up their profit. If they do so, it’s then impractical for them to sustain the function of the city, due to the lack of disposable revenue. Moreover, the government could use the money on other beneficial sectors, such as public health care, education, and infrastructure. These all could effectively enhanced citizen’s wellbeing and help them in an easier way.

3. Task completeness
The essay effectively addresses the task requirements by expressing a clear opinion and providing support for that opinion. However, there is room for improvement in elaborating on the viewpoint and providing more specific examples or details to strengthen the argument. Additionally, some minor grammatical errors should be addressed.
Suggestions for improvement:
-
Provide more specific examples or details to support your viewpoint.
-
Address minor grammatical errors.
Examples:
-
Instead of just mentioning your uncle's experience, provide more information about how the government's urban planning initiative has impacted other citizens as well.
-
Correct minor grammatical errors such as "government couldn’t afford to give up their profit" to "the government couldn't afford to give up its profit."
4. Essay structure and organization
The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The organization is mostly logical, with each paragraph focusing on a specific point and supporting details. However, transitions between ideas could be improved for better coherence.
Suggestions for improvement:
-
Improve transitions between ideas and paragraphs.
-
Ensure that each paragraph focuses on one main idea.
Examples:
-
Instead of starting a new paragraph with "I disagree with Paul’s idea," you could use a transition like "On the other hand, I disagree with Paul's idea..."
-

NowadaysNowadays,(This rule identifies whether commas are missing in a sentence.) along with the continued increase of the city population, people had more demands for suitable housing. In this way, the government solvesolves(punctuation + singular noun + plural verb) the problem of housing shortage by having a better plan for urban construction.
These all could effectively enhancedenhance(Non-infinitive verb after modal verbs) citizen’s wellbeing and help them in an easier way.
Display title: 6 Revised Essay
In my opinion, the most effective way for the government to address the housing shortage is by optimizing land use and enhancing urban planning strategies. As cities continue to experience population growth, the demand for suitable housing has increased significantly. For instance, my uncle, who lives in a densely populated city with limited income, found it nearly impossible to afford a house for his family. However, this year, the government initiated a plan to develop suburban areas surrounding the city. They introduced new transportation systems and allocated resources such as metro routes connecting to the city center, providing convenience for residents living nearby. Additionally, they constructed high-quality apartment buildings that efficiently utilized space while meeting families' living needs. Due to the lower land costs and government support, these apartments were affordably priced, enabling my uncle to purchase a new home without compromising his quality of life. In this manner, the government effectively addressed the housing shortage through improved urban planning.
I disagree with Paul's suggestion that governments should provide subsidies or tax relief to construction companies for building affordable houses because it may not be financially sustainable for them in the long run. Sacrificing profits could hinder their ability to maintain essential city functions due to reduced disposable revenue. Furthermore, governments could allocate funds towards other vital sectors such as public healthcare, education, and infrastructure development that would also contribute significantly to citizens' well-being and overall quality of life. Title: 6 文章修订
I agree with Claire's observation regarding the scarcity of affordable housing in major cities, which often results in long commutes for individuals working in urban areas. For example, my friend Bob lives outside the city and must travel at least an hour to reach his job. He considered borrowing money from his mother to purchase a house within the city, but even the smallest options were prohibitively expensive. Consequently, he continues to reside outside the city and endure lengthy commutes.
While Paul contends that many people prefer living in houses over apartments due to increased privacy, I argue that residing in suburban areas may actually offer less privacy than living in urban centers. For instance, during my childhood in a suburban area, our home was frequently targeted by thieves while my parents were away at work. The house's remote location made it difficult for me to contact law enforcement or access security services. (156 words)

Section Title: Addressing Affordable Housing Shortages
In response to the professor's question, I believe that a combination of both Claire's and Paul's suggestions would be the most effective way for the government to address the housing shortage in my country. Encouraging the construction of large buildings with affordable apartments in cities would cater to those who prioritize proximity to their workplaces and urban amenities. Simultaneously, providing subsidies or tax relief to construction companies for building small, affordable single-family houses on unused land surrounding cities would accommodate individuals who prefer a quieter, more private living environment. By implementing these complementary strategies, the government can create diverse housing options that cater to various preferences and needs, ultimately alleviating the affordable housing crisis more comprehensively.
