Professor

In class this week, we are looking at how markets work, particularly in regard to energy costs. Petroleum, also known simply as oil, is one of the most important international commodities. When the global market price of oil goes up, fuels such as gasoline (petrol) also become more expensive. Many people think governments should step in to protect consumers from increases in fuel prices. What is your view? Do you think governments should actively keep fuel prices low for consumers?

Kelly

I think it's a good government policy. Most people have to drive or use public transportation, like a bus, to get to work. When the price of gasoline goes up, it costs them more to get to work. People don't have a choice about whether to go to work or not, so they should be protected from price increases.

Andrew

I think the government keeping gas prices low is a bad policy. The biggest problem we face now is global climate change. The more expensive gasoline is, the less people will drive, and thus they will contribute fewer greenhouse gases to the air. Lowering the cost of gas just makes the problem worse.

From my perspective, I agree with Kelly’s idea that keeping fuel prices low for consumers will benefit people who heavily rely on vehicles such as buses or cars for their daily work life, because it can alleviate their financial burden. Another point I want to add is that low fuel prices can promote social welfare and equity. Since the global economic trend is not ideally perfect, poverty is a severe problem for all citizens, and there is an increased number of individuals and families with low incomes. If the fuel prices rise to a relatively high level, these people will be forced to bear the burden of increased fuel costs, which will eventually lead to inequalities and also hinder their access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Adversely, governments can provide relief to vulnerable populations, ensuring that essential transportation remains affordable and accessible to all. Furthermore, economic stability and consumer purchasing power can be achieved by low fuel prices. When fuel prices rise, it often leads to increased costs for various industries, such as transportation and manufacturing. These increased costs are typically passed on to consumers through higher prices for goods and services. By actively keeping fuel prices low, governments can help control inflationary pressures, ensuring stable prices for essential commodities and preventing an erosion of purchasing power for consumers. Therefore, keeping fuel prices low for consumers not only benefits individuals by providing ethical considerations, but also contributes to business practices, thus eventually providing advantages to the whole society.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

In my opinion, I concur with Kelly's argument that maintaining low fuel prices for consumers is advantageous, particularly for those who depend on transportation like buses or cars in their daily lives, as it helps ease their financial strain. Additionally, I would like to emphasize that low fuel prices can foster social welfare and equity. Given the current global economic climate, poverty remains a pressing issue affecting many individuals and families with limited income. High fuel prices would disproportionately burden these vulnerable groups, potentially restricting their access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Conversely, by ensuring affordable and accessible transportation for all citizens, governments can effectively support marginalized populations.

Moreover, economic stability and consumer purchasing power can be bolstered by maintaining low fuel prices. When fuel costs rise, various industries such as transportation and manufacturing often experience increased expenses which are then passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services. By proactively keeping fuel prices low, governments can mitigate inflationary pressures and maintain stable pricing for essential commodities while preserving consumer purchasing power. Consequently, sustaining low fuel prices not only benefits individuals through ethical considerations but also promotes responsible business practices – ultimately yielding advantages for society as a whole.
