As discussed in class, the concept of health has evolved over time, and with advancements in technology and medicine, it is often believed that staying healthy is easier in modern times. However, some argue that current lifestyles and environmental factors have made it more challenging to maintain good health. In which period would you argue it is easier for people to stay in a healthy condition—at present or in the past? Why?
Amber
I would definitely say that it is easier to maintain good health nowadays than in the past. It is important to consider the various factors that contribute to people's health. In the past, access to healthcare was limited and medical knowledge was not as advanced as it is today. Also, people's lifestyles were often less healthy due to factors such as limited access to healthy food and a lack of awareness about the importance of exercise.
Jonah
I hold a different view from Amber and believe that it was actually easier to stay healthy in the past. Most people led healthier, more active lives in the past so there was no need to go the gym in their spare time. There were far fewer sedentary jobs in those days so there was no obsession to keep fit. Also, in terms of the issue of food and diet, there were far fewer additives and processed foods in the past, meaning that people had healthier diets.

Jonah presents a compelling argument in favor of staying healthy in the past is much more easier. At first glance, it is reasonable that people who lived in the past would not eat pocessed foods and have active life styles. However, I tend to believe that today's people are staying in a healthy condition, because the medical technology has made a great improvement. For instance, I am a material research engineer who is working in a biotechnology company, and my duty is to innovate microcarries which can be used for genne therpy, and this treatment can save people's life. Additionally, the awareness of doing some exercise has also improvement. Now, schools all need the P.E. grade to consider the student whether can graduate. As this is the case, I have full of confidence to say that the healthy condition now is the best.

While Jonah's argument for maintaining health in the past may seem persuasive, I am inclined to believe that it is easier for individuals to maintain good health in the present. It is true that people in the past may have consumed fewer processed foods and led more active lifestyles. However, advancements in medical technology and increased awareness of healthy habits have significantly improved our ability to stay healthy today. For example, as a material research engineer working in a biotechnology company, my role involves developing innovative microcarriers for gene therapy, a treatment with the potential to save lives. Furthermore, there has been a marked improvement in promoting physical activity, with schools now requiring physical education grades as part of their graduation criteria. Given these factors, I am confident that our current state of health is superior to that of the past. (146 words)

I think it is much easier to stay healthy today than in the past. Firstly, because of the rapid development of medicine, many diseases that caused high rates of death in the past are like normal flu right now. The ability of doctors to save a person's life has been improved a lot and the life span has been expanded a lot too. What's more, the condition of people's lives has changed a lot from the past. In the past, the only thing that people cared about was how to obtain enough food and how to stay safe from the attack of wild animals. They may never pay much attention to how to become more healthy. In contrast, we barely worry about the material requirements. Instead, we presume a high-quality lifestyle, like going to the gym regularly and doing physical examinations annually. Therefore, people are much more healthy than in the past.

In my opinion, maintaining good health is considerably easier in the present day compared to the past. The advancements in medical science have led to effective treatments for numerous diseases that were once fatal, transforming them into manageable conditions. Consequently, life expectancy has significantly increased. Furthermore, societal priorities have shifted from mere survival to a focus on overall well-being and quality of life. In contrast to the past, when individuals primarily sought sustenance and safety from predators, contemporary society emphasizes the importance of regular exercise and preventive healthcare measures. As a result, people today are generally healthier than their predecessors. (104 words)

I agree with Amber and hold an opposite opinion to Jonah. I believe it's easier for people to maintain a healthy lifestyle nowadays than in the past. This is not only because of the improved medical and scientific knowledge but also because of the increased income of each individual. In the past, many people were unable to feed themselves with enough food let alone various food, so it's difficult for them to get well-rounded nutrients. For example, there once was a severe famine in history when people used to eat some certain kinds of mud in order to prevent themselves from feeling starved, which later proved to be harmful. I disagree with Jonah that people in the past didn't need to go to gyms because of their active lives. I consider it had nothing to do with a healthier lifestyle because they didn't realize that after doing high-intense work, people's immune ability would decrease because they were exhausted. Consequently, many people died because of overworking.

I concur with Amber and respectfully disagree with Jonah's perspective. In my opinion, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is significantly easier in contemporary times compared to the past. This can be attributed not only to advancements in medical and scientific knowledge but also to the increased income levels of individuals. Historically, numerous people struggled to obtain sufficient food, let alone a diverse diet, making it challenging for them to acquire well-rounded nutrients. For instance, during severe famines in the past, individuals resorted to consuming certain types of mud as a means of staving off hunger, which was later discovered to be detrimental.
Furthermore, I contest Jonah's assertion that people in the past did not require gym visits due to their active lifestyles. I argue that this had little bearing on their overall health as they were unaware of the consequences of engaging in high-intensity work without proper rest or recovery. As a result, many individuals experienced decreased immune function due to exhaustion and overworking, leading to numerous premature deaths. (173 words)

I agree with Amber that maintaining good health is more manageable in today's world. The advancements in medical technology, treatment methods, and the increased availability of healthcare professionals have significantly improved our ability to address health issues promptly and effectively. For example, an individual who has injured their leg can now receive immediate medical attention, undergo diagnostic tests such as X-rays, and even undergo surgery to stop bleeding within a short period. I tend to align with Amy’s idea that “ordinary people” approach is better. The primary merit of this method is that ordinary people can provide consumers a more authentic representation of a product. To be specific, models always pay more attention to luxurious aspect of a product, such as its appearance or expensive ingredients, potentially overlooking the durability or effect. Since most consumers are normal people, they may not share the same preferences or values as these famous figures, leading to a disconnect between the advertisement and the target audience. On the contrary, ordinary people better represent the majority of consumers by providing realistic feedback on a product’s longevity and performance. The consumers are more likely to trust ordinary people and their products. Therefore, I believe that utilizing ordinary people in advertisements is better strategy for promoting a product.

In my opinion, the "ordinary people" approach to advertising is more effective. The primary advantage of this method lies in its ability to offer consumers a genuine representation of a product. Specifically, celebrities tend to emphasize the luxurious aspects of a product, such as its appearance or premium ingredients, potentially neglecting crucial factors like durability or efficacy. Since the majority of consumers are not celebrities themselves, their preferences and values may differ significantly from those of famous figures, resulting in a disconnect between the advertisement and its target audience. In contrast, ordinary individuals accurately represent the general consumer base by providing realistic feedback on a product's longevity and performance. Consequently, consumers are more likely to trust and relate to endorsements from everyday people. Thus, I believe that incorporating ordinary individuals in advertisements is a superior strategy for promoting products effectively. (143 words)
