Professor

When people are asked about the most important discoveries or inventions made in the last two hundred years, they usually mention something very obvious, like the computer or the cell phone. But there are thousands of other discoveries or inventions that have had a huge impact on how we live today. What scientific discovery or technological invention from the last two hundred years—other than computers and cell phones—would you choose as being important? Why?

Student A

I mean, we’re so used to science and technology that we are not even aware of all the things we use in our daily lives. I would probably choose space satellites. This technology happened in the last hundred years, and it has become important for so many things. Just think about navigation, or telecommunications, or even the military.

Student B

I am thinking about medical progress. Like, for example, when scientists discovered things about healthy nutrition. I am thinking of identifying all the vitamins we need to stay healthy. I am not sure exactly when the vitamin discoveries happened, but I know they are very important. Our health is much better than it was 200 years ago.

This is a challenging topic, but I think that space satellite is one of the most important technological invention from the last two centuries. I strongly agree with Paul's idea that space satellite has taken crucial roles in navigation, telecommunications and military. I'd add that space satellite changes our daily life dramatically. Without space satellite, there would be no GPS system. Without GPS system, I can't imagine how we would live. Nowadays, when I drive to somewhere new, I just need to take out my phone and enter the destination. In constrast, in the past, I had to purchase several maps! Moreover, the maps wouldn't guide me to the shorest path, but GPS will, which saves a lot of time for me. While Claire raised the relevant point that the vitamin discoviries improved our health, she didn't mention that there are far more important scientifit discoveries in the medical areas than the discoveries of vitamins. For example, antibiotics saved millions of lives.

1: Instead of saying "Without space satellite, there would be no GPS system," you could say "Without space satellites, the development of GPS systems would have been impossible, which are now essential for various industries such as transportation, logistics, and emergency services."

改进示例2: Instead of just mentioning antibiotics, you could elaborate more on their importance by saying "For example, the discovery of antibiotics has revolutionized medicine by effectively treating bacterial infections that were once life-threatening, saving millions of lives worldwide."

Firstly, space satellites have revolutionized navigation systems by providing accurate and real-time location information."

改进示例2: 在讨论其他学生观点时,可以使用过渡词如 "On the other hand" 或 "However" 来引导对比。例如:"On the other hand, while Claire raised a relevant point about the importance of vitamin discoveries, there are far more significant scientific discoveries in the medical field, such as antibiotics."

Undoubtedly, selecting the most significant technological invention from the past two centuries is a daunting task. However, I concur with Paul's assertion that space satellites have had a profound impact on our lives. These remarkable devices play indispensable roles in navigation, telecommunications, and military operations. Furthermore, space satellites have revolutionized our daily routines in numerous ways. For instance, without them, the Global Positioning System (GPS) would not exist. The convenience of modern navigation using GPS-enabled devices is unparalleled; we can effortlessly find our way to new destinations without relying on cumbersome maps. Additionally, GPS technology often suggests the shortest route to our destination, saving us valuable time.

While Claire raises a valid point regarding the importance of vitamin discoveries in improving overall health, it is essential to note that there are far more groundbreaking scientific advancements in medicine than just these discoveries. For example, antibiotics have saved millions of lives and continue to be crucial in combating various infections and diseases. (166 words)

With Pasteur's work and discoveries, the world changed in a way people couldn't imagine. So many people were dying really young because at that time life's conditions were not as good as the one we have now. With vaccine, we could now irradicate diseases that were killing millions of people, we learn so much about the immune system and ways our body was reacting to pathogens and the answers he could produce to defend us against it. Medicine evolved so much and keeps evolving every day because scientists are curious to understand how our body is working and how he is able to communicate with our environment. People aged 40 are now not that old and still have a really long life to live and enjoy when 2 centuries ago it was synonymous of 80% chance of dying.

Over the past two centuries, numerous scientific discoveries and technological inventions have significantly impacted our lives. Among these, I believe that vaccines and antibiotics stand out as particularly important advancements. Pasteur's groundbreaking work in this field has led to remarkable changes in public health and life expectancy. Prior to the development of vaccines, countless individuals succumbed to deadly diseases at a young age due to poor living conditions. Vaccines have enabled us to eradicate numerous illnesses that once claimed millions of lives, while also enhancing our understanding of the immune system and its response to pathogens.

Furthermore, medicine continues to evolve as scientists strive to unravel the complexities of human biology and its interaction with the environment. Today, individuals in their 40s can anticipate a long and fulfilling life, whereas just two centuries ago, reaching this age was associated with an 80% mortality rate. The advent of vaccines and antibiotics has undeniably revolutionized healthcare and significantly improved our overall quality of life. (167 words)
