Groupthink One process by which groups may make bad or irrational decisions is known as groupthink. Individual members of a group attempt to conform their opinions to what they believe to be the group consensus even though the result may be negative. There are many reasons why groupthink happens. These include the desire to be liked, fear of losing a job, or even not wanting to be the one employee delaying a decision that seems inevitable. These kinds of implicit pressures to conform lead group members to ultimately make decisions that each, by himself or herself, might normally not make.
Domanda
Explain groupthink and its effects using example of the computer company.

The man and the co-worker both took a step back finally. The result is that their competitors benefit much from the change of their computer's looks, and they also win many potential audiences and buyers from the man's computer company.
Revised Answer (140 words):
Groupthink is a process in which individuals within a group conform their opinions to the perceived group consensus. A prime example occurred when a man and his coworker proposed updating their computer's design to make it more contemporary and visually appealing. However, their managers insisted on prioritizing technology over aesthetics. Consequently, several supporters of the design change shifted their stance to align with management's viewpoint. Feeling pressured by this shift, both the man and his coworker eventually withdrew their proposal. Ultimately, this decision proved detrimental to the company, as their competitors capitalized on the opportunity to attract customers with a more visually appealing design. This led to a loss of potential clients and revenue for the man's computer company, demonstrating the negative consequences of groupthink.

Revised Answer (140 words): In the reading passage, it is mentioned that groupthink can lead to irrational decisions in a group. In the listening part, the professor shares his experience with groupthink in a computer company where he used to work. He and his coworker suggested giving their computers a design makeover to attract more customers since market research showed that new customers would be more interested if the computers looked cooler. Initially, more than half of the group supported the idea, but some senior managers opposed it, stating that their focus had always been on technology and changing the design would be an unnecessary cost. Due to groupthink, many supporters changed their minds, and eventually, everyone voted against the design change. This decision cost the company potential customers and profit when a competitor released a new design that attracted customers.

Topic Development The speaker provides a coherent and well-organized response, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples. However, there is room for improvement in fully explaining the concept of groupthink and its effects on the computer company. Providing more context and details will strengthen the topic development and create a more compelling response.
Original Answer: Group thinking means that individual members of groups may attempt to confront group's opinion even though the result may be negative. Groupthink occurs when individual members of a group conform to the perceived consensus, even if it leads to negative outcomes. (Changed "group thinking" to "groupthink" and rephrased the sentence for clarity) The speaker used his experience as example. The speaker provided a personal example to illustrate this concept. (Rephrased for better flow) At that time, he worked at a computer company, and he and his co-worker decided to change the exterior of their product. At first, many co-workers agreed with their proposal. However, after senior manager did not agree with this proposal, lots of their co-workers started to change their mind. And the reason why they do this is because they did not want to make bad imagination for senior manager, which may affect their chance of promotion. So that is group thinking.
Revised Answer (140 words): Groupthink occurs when individual members of a group conform to the perceived consensus, even if it leads to negative outcomes. The speaker provided a personal example to illustrate this concept. While working at a computer company, the speaker and a co-worker proposed changing the exterior design of their product. Initially, many colleagues supported the idea. However, when a senior manager expressed disagreement, several team members changed their stance. They did so because they feared creating a negative impression on the senior manager, which could potentially hinder their chances for promotion. This behavior exemplifies groupthink, as individuals prioritized conformity over their initial beliefs, ultimately leading to an unfavorable decision for the company.

Original: So the professor talked about his experience working in a computer company, where once him and his co-workers were talking about a new design makeover to make the product look more up-to-date, cooler, and not old-fashioned. And when they delivered this idea to other people, most people support this idea. However, one senior manager disagrees and says that functionality overs the looks. And immediately, all the people turn to the side of the higher manager, even the co-worker did. And the reason that they gave is that disagreeing with the senior manager will make their chance of getting promotion lower, not look like a team player. So in turn, the professor became the only one who voted against the decision. And that just explains what groupthink is, is where everybody was prone to one where most people vote for it, and actually it turns out to be not accurate.

Revised (140 words): The professor discussed his experience working in a computer company, where he and his co-workers proposed a new design makeover to make their products more modern and appealing. When they presented this idea, most people supported it. However, one senior manager disagreed, arguing that functionality should take precedence over appearance. Immediately, others sided with the senior manager, including the co-worker who initially supported the idea. They believed that disagreeing with the senior manager could harm their chances of promotion and make them appear less like team players. Consequently, the professor became the only one who voted against the decision. This example illustrates groupthink, which occurs when individuals conform to a perceived majority opinion, even if it may not be accurate or beneficial.

5.语言使用Original: The group theme refers to a psychological phenomenon when a team tends to make bad or irrational decisions because the individuals are afraid of being disliked, losing his job, or being the only one who delayed the team decision. While in the lecture, the professor illustrates this idea by giving an example when he is working in a computer company, when he and another worker tend to give the computer a makeover in order to sell them to more customers. However, the senior manager in the team denied this plan. He thinks it's necessary because the computer only focuses on technology. And the supporters, co-workers, and even the author himself feel really doubtful. And finally, they give up the plan because they are afraid of losing their promotion opportunity. And finally, this decision is very costly because their competitor beat them with a new design.

5.语言使用Original: The lecture focuses mainly on the term groupthink, which refers to the process in which group members made bad and irrational decisions. To better illustrate this term, the professor gives a very vivid example of himself. When he was working for a computer company, someone suggested that they should have a design makeover because their computer was already very technologically advanced. If they looked better, they could sell better. At first, nearly half of the employees supported this idea. However, some senior managers thought this was an unnecessary change, and soon most of the supporters changed their mind because they don't want to leave a bad impression on the senior managers, thus jeopardizing their chance of promotion. In the end, even the author gave up his mind, but the company ended up losing a lot of money because their competitor employed a new design, drawing a lot of customers from them.

Revised (140 words): The lecture focuses mainly on the term Groupthink, which refers to the process in which group members make poor and irrational decisions. To better illustrate this concept, the professor shares a vivid example from his own experience at a computer company. A colleague suggested a design makeover for their computers, as their technology was already advanced, and an improved appearance could boost sales. Initially, nearly half of the employees supported this idea. However, some senior managers considered it an unnecessary change, causing most supporters to change their minds to avoid leaving a bad impression and jeopardizing their chances for promotion. Eventually, even the professor abandoned his idea, resulting in the company losing a significant amount of money when their competitor launched a new design that attracted many customers.

Revised Answer (140 words): Groupthink refers to the process in which a group makes a bad or irrational decision. The professor shared his personal experience with groupthink in a computer company. However, the professor faced challenges within the company due to groupthink. Some employees believed that the computer design was outdated and needed a change, while others disagreed, thinking that the focus should be solely on technology. Even the manager expressed this opinion, causing some people to change their minds. As more people sided with senior management, the professor started to feel like he was the only one holding up the vote. Eventually, he voted against his own idea, and the company decided to stick with the old design. This decision ended up costing the company a lot of money when their competitor released a new design that attracted customers and prevented them from profiting on potential new customers.
