This week, I want you to discuss assessment criteria. Some schoolteachers give high grades (marks) only to those students who perform well on their homework assignments and tests. Other teachers, however, may give high grades to students who have worked very hard on their assignments but have not performed so well. Which approach do you think is better: Giving grades based only on performance, or grading students not just on performance but also on their effort?
Kelly
I think grades should be based on performance only. It’s a matter of fairness. I’d be really upset if another student got nearly the same grade that I did when I turned in work that was almost perfect and the other student’s work had incorrect answers or unclear ideas. It wouldn’t matter to me if they worked harder.
Paul
Sure, evaluation should mainly be based upon the student’s performance, but hard work should count for something. A student who works hard, even when the final grade isn’t the highest in the class, builds character, which will benefit the student later in life when they go to university or apply for a job.

I agree more with Kelly that grades should only based on students' perfomance instead of other factors, such as effort or hard work. First, like Kelly said, it is the fairest way to grade a student. Because the standard teachers use to grade students' performance is clear to every student. If students really work hard, they won't performance very bad at the end. Otherwise, other factors like hard work is difficult to measure due to lack of a clear standard. Sometimes teachers may involve some subjective emotions to grade students, which is totally unfair. In conclude, grade students only based on their performance is the fairest and the most objective way.

I concur with Kelly that grades should be based solely on students' performance, rather than incorporating factors such as effort or hard work. Primarily, evaluating students based on their performance is the fairest approach. All students are well-aware of the standards employed to assess their performance. If they genuinely exert themselves, their results will ultimately reflect their dedication.
Moreover, measuring effort is challenging due to the absence of clear criteria. Occasionally, teachers may incorporate subjective emotions when grading students, which can lead to unfair outcomes. By focusing exclusively on performance, we ensure a more objective and equitable assessment process.
In summary, relying solely on student performance for grading purposes is the most impartial and unbiased method. This approach eliminates potential subjectivity and promotes fairness among all students. (128 words)

Paul presents a compelling proposition, suggesting that journal writing may become a chore for students if they are not interested in. However, I firmly believe that journal writing serves as a meaningful learning method for students. By writing down something to express their thoughts, students can review the information in class and form their own systematic structure of knowledge. In this case, they can practice their major knowledge in a more clear way. For example, one of my architectural professor asked us to summarize our insights on paper for his class, which allowed me to transfer numerous detailed points to a comprehensive knowledge system. What’s more, writing journal can also foster the connections between students and teachers, since teachers can directly know the thoughts and feedback from students and provide timely instruction. Therefore, while students who are not interested in it won’t take it seriously, it’s reasonable to encourage students to write journals periodically considering the enhancement of knowledge understanding and student-teacher relationship.

For example, one of my architectural professorprofessors(two of my friend (friends)) asked us to summarize our insights on paper for his class, which allowed me to transfer numerous detailed points to a comprehensive knowledge system. What’s more, writing journal can also foster the connections between students and teachers, since teachers can directly know the thoughts and feedback from students and provide timely instruction.

6.文章修订
Paul presents a compelling argument, suggesting that journal writing may become a tedious task for students who lack interest in it. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that journal writing serves as a valuable learning tool for students.
Firstly, journal writing allows students to consolidate their learning by expressing their thoughts and reflecting on class content. In doing so, they can review the information and form their own systematic structure of knowledge. For instance, in my architectural design class, our professor asked us to write reflective journals on each project we completed. This practice not only helped me consolidate the design principles I learned but also allowed me to track my progress over time.
Moreover, journal writing can enhance communication between students and teachers by providing a platform for sharing thoughts and feedback. For example, a teacher could use journal entries to identify common misconceptions among students and address them in subsequent lessons.
In light of these benefits, it is reasonable to encourage students to engage in periodic journal writing despite some individuals' initial disinterest. By doing so, we can promote knowledge retention and foster stronger student-teacher relationships. (187 words)

From my perspective, students should be given grades. I appreciate Jake’s arguments that scores enable students to find out their shortages. Furthermore, grades are the most effective feedback to students, therefore, students who study harder than others will receive rewards-higher scores, and therefore will be boosted to achieve higher goals. For instance, my cousin puts lots of effort on French and got a high grade in high school. Encouraged by the score, he now chooses French as his major in University. I have to admit Lila’s views that grades indeed will create competitive circumstances and will lead to disappointments to students sometimes. Yet since students should be taught to face difficulties and cristicism, grades still act as an important role in education. Thus, grading students is benificial to long-term developments.

In my opinion, assigning grades to students is beneficial as it serves as an effective form of feedback and motivates them to strive for excellence. Although Jake's argument against grading due to its competitive nature holds some merit, I believe that the advantages of grading outweigh the potential drawbacks.
Grades offer a clear and quantifiable measure of a student's progress, allowing them to identify areas in need of improvement. For example, my cousin dedicated significant effort towards learning French and received high grades in high school. This positive reinforcement encouraged him to pursue French as his major in university.
Admittedly, Lila raises valid concerns regarding the competitive environment created by grading systems and the potential for students to feel discouraged. However, it is crucial for students to learn how to face challenges and criticism constructively. Grades serve as an essential tool in fostering resilience and preparing students for real-world situations where their performance will be evaluated.
In summary, while there are some negative aspects associated with grading systems, their role in providing valuable feedback and promoting personal growth cannot be overlooked. Therefore, I maintain that assigning grades to students is advantageous for their long-term development. (196 words)

Kelly presents a compelling argument in favor of giving grades based only on performance. Admittedly, performance is an excellent means to evaluate different students participation in a class. However, considering the background of different students, I am inclined to prioritize the evaluation with both performance and effort. In my view, focusing on performance is an efficient way to evaluate students' ablity, while giving attention to students' effort can be a good way to see the improvement. A intersting and useful class, not only teaches students the ablity to find jobs, but also guide students to explore something with curiosity and become more mentle-health. For example, engaging in enjoyable activities helps students stay motivated, maintain a positive outlook, and experience a sense of satisfaction. Conversly, taking a great efforts in a class but finally get the lowest grade would be a huge damage to students' mental health, thus losing their motivation to explore something new. Therefore, I firmly believe that focusing both performance and effort will substantially improve students' motivation and strengthen their research capabilities.

In my view, focusing on performance efficiently assesses students' abilities, while acknowledging their effort can encourage improvement and personal growth.
An engaging and useful class not only teaches students the ability to find jobs but also guides them to explore new topics with curiosity, promoting their mental health. For example, participating in enjoyable activities helps students stay motivated, maintain a positive outlook, and experience a sense of satisfaction. Conversely, putting in great effort in a class but ultimately receiving the lowest grade can significantly damage a student's mental health, causing them to lose motivation for exploring new subjects.
Therefore, I firmly believe that a balanced focus on both performance and effort will not only improve students' motivation but also strengthen their research capabilities in the long run. (175 words)
