نص القراءة

The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it caused much concern because sea otters play an important ecological role in the coastal ecosystem. Experts started investigating the cause of the decline and quickly realized that there were two possible explanations: environmental pollution or attacks by predators. Initially, the pollution hypothesis seemed the more likely of the two.The first reason why pollution seemed the more likely cause was that there were known sources of it along the Alaskan coast, such as oil rigs and other sources of industrial chemical pollution. Water samples from the area revealed increased levels of chemicals that could decrease the otters' resistance to life-threatening infections and thus could indirectly cause their deaths.Second, other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions along the Alaskan coast were also declining, indicating that whatever had endangered the otters was affecting other sea mammals as well. This fact again pointed to environmental pollution, since it usually affects the entire ecosystem rather than a single species. Only widely occurring predators, such as the orca (a large predatory whale), could have the same effect, but orcas prefer to hunt much larger prey, such as other whales.Third, scientists believed that the pollution hypothesis could also explain the uneven pattern of otter decline: at some Alaskan locations the otter populations declined greatly, while at others they remained stable. Some experts explained these observations by suggesting that ocean currents or other environmental factors may have created uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast.

The reading and listening passages debate the reason for the decline of sea otter population. The reading materials believe that environmental pollution is the main reason for the decline providing three reasons, which are contradicted by the following lecture. Firstly, the reading material claims that there exist some known sources of pollution such as oil rigs and other industrial chemical pollution. It is the increased levels of chemical that can decrease the otters' resistance to life-threatening infections which will finally result in their deaths. However, the speaker contradicts the reading's claim by pointing out they are hardly find any dead sea otters along Alaska beaches. The reason is that predator can eat otters immediately, thus it cannot wash off up on shore. Secondly, the reading material argues that environmental pollution affects the entire ecosystem rather than a single species. The reasons are twofold. For one thing other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions are also declining. For other thing, widely occurring predators, such as orcas, can result in the same consequence. But orcas prefer to eat larger prey like whales. However, the speaker holds the opposite opinion. He believes orcas, under the huge survival pressure, will start hunting smaller sea mammals since wheals are killed by human hunters so that orcas have to change their diet to survive. Thirdly, the reading material points out that the pollution theory can explain that the ocean environmental factors may cause uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast. However, according to the speaker, the reading' s claim does not hold water. He argues that orca predation theory can explain the uneven pattern of otter decline because at some places predation can access to the where sea otters live, therefore the number of sea otters will decline greatly. When orcas can't access shallow or rocky locations, sea otter population will keep stable.

3.Task completeness The essay does a good job of addressing the specific requirements of the task by summarizing the points made in the lecture and explaining how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage. However, there is room for improvement in terms of language use and clarity.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Avoid repetition of phrases or words, such as "the reading material" or "the speaker."

  • Use more precise vocabulary to convey your ideas more effectively.

Examples:

  1. Instead of writing "the reading materials believe," you could write "the reading passage argues."

  2. Instead of writing "hardly find any dead sea otters," you could write "few dead sea otters have been found."

4.Essay structure and organization The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point from the lecture and provides supporting details. However, transitions between ideas and paragraphs could be improved for better coherence.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use clear transition words or phrases to connect ideas within paragraphs.

  • Make sure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that introduces the main point being discussed.

Examples:

  1. To improve transitions within paragraphs, you could use phrases like "on the other hand" or "in contrast" to show a shift in perspective.

  2. For clearer topic sentences, instead of writing "Firstly, the reading material claims," you could write "The first argument presented in the reading passage is that pollution is causing sea otter decline due to known sources along the Alaskan coast."

The reading and listening passages debate the reason for the decline of sea otter population. The reading materials believe that environmental pollution is the main reason for the declinedecline,(This rule identifies whether commas are missing in a sentence.) providing three reasons, which are contradicted by the following lecture.

Firstly, the reading material claims that there exist some known sources of pollutionpollution,(This rule identifies whether commas are missing in a sentence.) such as oil rigs and other industrial chemical pollution. It is the increased levels of chemical that can decrease the otters' resistance to life-threatening infectionsinfections,(This rule identifies whether commas are missing in a sentence.) which will finally result in their deaths. However, the speaker contradicts the reading's claim by pointing out they are hardly findfound(Agreement: 'been' or 'was' + past tense) any dead sea otters along Alaska beaches. The reason is that predator can eat otters immediately, thus it cannot wash off up on shore.

Secondly, the reading material argues that environmental pollution affects the entire ecosystem rather than a single species. The reasons are twofold. For one thingthing,(This rule identifies whether commas are missing in a sentence.) other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions are also declining. For otherthe other(This rule identifies whether the article 'the' is missing in a sentence.) thing, widely occurring predators, such as orcas, can result in the same consequence.

However, according to the speaker, the reading' sreading's(space after apostrophe in contraction (e.g. I' m)) claim does not hold water. He argues that orca predation theory can explain the uneven pattern of otter decline because at some placesplaces'(Possessive apostrophe error) predation can access to theto(Detects potentially wrong usage of "to the") where sea otters live, therefore the number of sea otters will decline greatly. When orcas can't access shallow or rocky locations, sea otter population will keep stable.

Section Title: 6. Revised Essay

The reading and listening passages discuss the reasons behind the decline of the sea otter population. The reading passage posits that environmental pollution is the primary cause, providing three supporting arguments. However, the lecture casts doubt on these points by presenting contradictory evidence.

Firstly, the reading passage asserts that known sources of pollution, such as oil rigs and industrial chemical pollution, contribute to increased levels of chemicals that can weaken otters' resistance to life-threatening infections, ultimately causing their deaths. In contrast, the lecturer argues that this claim is undermined by the scarcity of dead sea otters found on Alaskan beaches. This observation supports the predator hypothesis since predators would consume otters immediately, preventing them from washing ashore.

Secondly, the reading passage contends that environmental pollution affects not only sea otters but also other sea mammals such as seals and sea lions. It suggests that widespread predators like orcas could have a similar impact; however, orcas typically prefer larger prey like whales. The lecturer disputes this argument by stating that orcas have likely adapted their diet to include smaller sea mammals due to a scarcity of whales caused by human hunting activities.

Lastly, the reading passage proposes that ocean currents and other environmental factors may create uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast, explaining the irregular pattern of otter decline. However, the lecturer counters this claim by asserting that orca predation offers a more plausible explanation for this phenomenon. According to him, locations easily accessible to orcas experience significant declines in sea otter populations while those in shallow or rocky areas inaccessible to orcas maintain stable populations. The essay does address the specific requirements of the task by summarizing the points made in the lecture and explaining how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage. However, there is room for improvement in terms of clarity and accuracy. The essay should more clearly explain how each point from the lecture contradicts or weakens a point from the reading passage.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Clearly state each point from the lecture and directly relate it to a specific point from the reading passage.

  • Use more precise language to explain how each point from the lecture casts doubt on a point from the reading passage.

Examples:

  1. Instead of saying "the professor retorts that people never find the dead seals," you could write, "the professor argues that no dead sea otters have been found washed up on Alaskan beaches, which would be expected if pollution were causing their deaths."

  2. Instead of saying "hunting will change the survival mode of these mammals," you could write, "the professor explains that orcas have likely started hunting smaller sea mammals like seals, sea lions, and sea otters due to a decline in their preferred prey, whales."

4.Essay structure and organization The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each point, and a conclusion. However, there is room for improvement in terms of organization and transitions between ideas.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use clear topic sentences at the beginning of each body paragraph to introduce each main point.

  • Improve transitions between ideas and paragraphs to create better coherence.

Examples:

  1. For your second body paragraph's topic sentence, instead of writing "Second, the author claims that most of the seal and seal lion are decline, or endangered," you could write, "The second point made in the lecture is that the decline of other sea mammals can be attributed to orca predation rather than pollution."

  2. To improve transitions between ideas, instead of writing "While the professor asserts that the reason of the decline is not because of the pollution, is the human's hunting," you could write, "The professor counters this argument by explaining that human hunting has led to a decrease in whale populations, forcing orcas to change their diet and prey on smaller sea mammals."

Section Title: 6. Revised Essay

The reading passage and listening discuss the cause of the sea otter's decline, presenting two theories: pollution and predation. While the reading passage supports the pollution hypothesis, the lecture casts doubt on this theory and favors predation as the primary cause.

Firstly, the author of the reading passage highlights known sources of pollution, such as oil rigs and chemical pollution, which could weaken otters' resistance to infections and ultimately lead to their death. However, the professor counters this argument by pointing out that no dead sea otters have been found washed up on Alaskan beaches, which would be expected if pollution were causing their demise. Instead, this absence of dead otters supports the predator hypothesis.

Secondly, the reading passage claims that declines in other sea mammals like seals and sea lions indicate that pollution is affecting the entire ecosystem. In contrast, the professor argues that human hunting has led to a scarcity of whales in the area, forcing orcas to change their diet and prey on smaller sea mammals such as seals, sea lions, and otters. This shift in predation patterns is likely responsible for declines in these species rather than pollution.

Lastly, while the reading passage suggests that an uneven pattern of otter decline across Alaskan locations points to pollution as a cause, with some populations declining rapidly while others remain stable; the professor offers an alternative explanation. According to her argument, accessibility for orcas determines whether or not otter populations decline. In areas easily accessible to orcas, otter numbers have dropped significantly; however, shallow and rocky locations where orcas cannot reach have seen stable otter populations. This evidence lends greater credibility to the predator theory over pollution as a primary cause for declining sea otter populations. (293 words)

The lecture supports the predation theory, while casting doubts on the pollution hypothesis asserted in the reading passage. Firstly, the lecture notes that environmental pollution will lead to lethal infections, and yet dead sea otters can't actually be found on the Alaskan shores. This fact challenges the passage's statement that pollution is the most likely cause of the otters' decline. Secondly, according to the lecture, whales are basically extinct in that certain region due to human hunters. Thus, although the orcas may have a favor to whales, they had to change their diet under current circumstances and hunt smaller sea mammals instead. Therefore, the decrease of sea lions, seals and otters can be explained by the predation hypothesis, which contradicts the passage's claim that environmental pollution is the reason of the decline of various species. Lastly, the lecture contends that the vital factor that decides the pattern of the otters' decline is whether or not their dwelling locations are accessible to orcas. Specifically speaking, in areas that can be easily accessed by orcas, the number of otters dropped significantly. In the opposite situation, it remained stable. This argument refutes the passage's opinion that the pollution hypothesis is the best explanation to the uneven pattern of the otters' decline.

This argument refutes the passage's opinion that the pollution hypothesis is the best explanation to the uneven pattern of the otters' decline.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The lecture casts doubt on the pollution hypothesis presented in the reading passage, providing support for the predation theory instead. First, the lecture highlights that despite pollution causing lethal infections, dead sea otters are not found washed up on Alaskan shores. This fact contradicts the reading passage's assertion that pollution is the primary cause of otter decline. Second, the lecture explains that due to human hunting, whales have become scarce in the region, forcing orcas to change their diet and hunt smaller sea mammals. Consequently, the decline of sea lions, seals, and otters can be attributed to predation rather than environmental pollution as suggested in the reading passage.

Lastly, the lecture argues that accessibility to orcas determines the pattern of otter decline. In areas easily accessed by orcas, otter populations have significantly decreased; however, in shallow or rocky locations where orcas cannot reach, otter populations remain stable. This explanation challenges the reading passage's claim that uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast account for varying patterns of otter decline. (172 words)

Secondly, according to the lecture, Second, the lecture explains that due to human hunting (revised for clarity), whales are basically extinct in that certain region due to human hunters. Thus, although the have become scarce in the region, forcing orcas may have a favor to whales, they had to change their diet under current circumstances and hunt smaller sea mammals instead. Therefore, the decrease (rephrased for better flow). Consequently, the decline of sea lions, seals seals, and otters can be explained by the attributed to predation hypothesis, which contradicts the passage's claim that rather than environmental pollution is the reason of the as suggested in the reading passage (clarified relationship between predation and pollution).

Lastly, the lecture argues that accessibility to orcas determines the pattern of otter decline of various species. Lastly, the lecture contends that the vital factor that decides the pattern of the otters' decline is whether or not their dwelling locations are accessible to orcas. Specifically speaking, in (revised for clarity). In areas that can be easily accessed by orcas, the number of otters dropped significantly. In the opposite situation, it remained otter populations have significantly decreased; however, in shallow or rocky locations where orcas cannot reach (added detail for better understanding), otter populations remain stable. This explanation challenges the reading passage's claim that uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast account for varying patterns of otter decline (clarified argument refutes the passage's opinion that the pollution hypothesis is the best explanation to the uneven pattern of the otters' decline.against pollution hypothesis).

Section Title: 6. Article Revision
