We've been discussing the idea that human wellbeing is not necessarily improved by ever-increasing production and consumption of goods and services. Some people argue that humans already consume too many goods, from clothing to electronics to food; they believe that excessive consumption has created serious problems for humanity and even the planet. Do you agree that excessive consumption-buying more than we truly need—has become a serious problem? Why or why not?
Paul
I absolutely agree. We buy far more than we need, and that can't continue indefinitely. For years people have used shopping as a form of recreation. The products bought on a whim are filling up landfills, and the energy expended producing the goods has, sreated a global warming crisis. We should start gradually reducing consumption.
Claire
I disagree with the idea that overconsumption is a dramatic problem. I agree there is some overconsumption, but it happens mostly with wealthy people. I think in general almost everyone else already buys only what they need. In fact, many people around the world are not even able to obtain everything they need.

While I can see Claire's perspective that since there are numerous people who can not afford daily items, excessive consumption is not problematic, I concur with Paul's viewpoint that this phenomenon perhaps resulted in some disturbing troubles. As Paul mentioned, massive manufacturing to meet market demands is not eco-friendly, which may lead to environmental problems such as the global warming crisis. Producing excessive products needs to utilize substantial fuels such as oil and gas which will dramatically boost the emission of greenhouse gases. In addition to Paul's argument, I believe that excessive consumption may do harm to an individual's mental well-being. Nowadays, a remarkably increasing number of people are in pursuit of excessive consumption such as luxuries which they actually do not need to show their status and gain popularity through social media. It will intensify unhealthy social trends that are harmful to young people who do not have independent thinking ability.

Example 1: Instead of just mentioning "luxuries," you could provide specific examples, such as high-end cars or designer clothing, to illustrate your point about excessive consumption.
Example 2: You could discuss how some people might argue that increased consumption leads to economic growth and job creation, but then counter this argument by pointing out the negative environmental and social impacts.
Example 1: In the introduction, you could clearly state your agreement with Paul's viewpoint and briefly mention the reasons you will discuss in the essay (e.g., environmental impact and mental well-being).
Example 2: When discussing the negative impact on mental well-being, you could dedicate a separate paragraph to this point and provide more detailed examples or explanations to support your argument.

While I understand Claire's perspective that excessive consumption may not be a widespread issue due to the numerous individuals who cannot afford basic necessities, I concur with Paul's viewpoint that this phenomenon has indeed resulted in significant problems. As Paul highlighted, the massive manufacturing required to meet market demands is environmentally detrimental, potentially exacerbating issues such as global warming. The production of excessive goods necessitates the utilization of substantial fuel resources like oil and gas, which in turn dramatically increases greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond Paul's argument, I contend that excessive consumption can also negatively impact an individual's mental well-being. In contemporary society, an increasing number of people pursue unnecessary luxuries to display their status and gain popularity through social media platforms. This behavior perpetuates unhealthy social trends that can be particularly harmful to impressionable young individuals who lack independent critical thinking skills. (146 words)
