Task Overview

Professor

Professor: Today, we are going to talk about whether it has become easier to maintain good health than it was in the past. As the economy prospers and technologies evolve, more and more people have come to realize the importance of maintaining good health. Though people nowadays know and care more about health, the problem is, is it more challenging or easier for people to maintain good health today?

Claire

Claire: I think it has become easier for modern people to keep healthy. Thanks to economic growth, people have enjoyed higher incomes and thus higher living standards. Therefore, most people, compared to people in the past, have more money at their disposal to spend on healthier lifestyles. In other words, they can afford proper medical treatments while they are sick. Besides, they can eat in a more nutritious and balanced way.

Paul

Paul: Although I share Claire’s view that people have become wealthier, I still believe that it has become more challenging for people to maintain good health. Due to technological progress, life has become more convenient: people can do almost anything indoors with just a few taps or clicks. They can just order food and shop online, take online courses, and entertain themselves without heading out to do everything in person, unlike people in the past. As a result, people today exercise much less than ever before, and such laziness, inevitably, has considerably contributed to many more health problems today.

User Samples & Evaluation Results

User Sample

Modernization has brought various merits and disadvantages to individual's living, and personal health is one of the aspect being transformed. While both Claire and Paul offers a valid point, considering the necessities to maintain fitness mentally and physically, I advocate for a combine perspective that today's society poses challenges as well as opportunities for individuals to be healthy. First, various medical resources and treatment methods resulting from the development of technology and economy today ensures a better chance for individuals to search for cure if diseases occurred, as Claire suggests. Compared with the circumstances back to ancient times, the lack of medicine can easily lead to death even when a minor disease occurs. However, the downside of the rapid development of technology cannot be neglected. While it facilitates a more comfortable and convenient living, the forming of this lifestyle often leads to the reduction of people’s exercise time and other physical or mental issues, such as obesity and depression. It’s thus equally essential to highlight the importance of disconnecting with the technology while exercising more frequently. With a combination thinking of both approaches, the issue can be better understood, unveiling more possibilities for public healthcare.

Modernization has brought various merits and disadvantages to individuals' lives, with personal health being one aspect that has undergone significant transformation. This is a stark contrast to ancient times when the lack of medicine could easily lead to death even from minor ailments.
