In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

The passage presents three pieces of evidence suggesting that a four-day workweek would benefit the economy as a who as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. While the lecturer contends that offering employees the option of a four-day workweek won't have a positive economic effect as reading suggests for several reasons. Firstly, the reading passage makes clear that by adopting a four-day workweek, company will benefit by the increase in work efficiency of employees. The lecturer, however, opines that the cost of firms may rise severly because more employees need to be trained and much more money will be spend on training and medical benefits for crews, also, firms has to pay for more office space and more computers, which will cause a gigantic decrease on company's profits. Secondly, according to the passage, primary benefits of offering four-day workweek to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. Nonetheless, professor rebuts this by arguing that firms take actions such as ask their employees to work overtime in order to make up the difference or expect that their four-dayemployees can do the same amount of work they used to do in five days, which will create no additional jobs. Finally, the reading passage maintains that the option of four-day workweek would be better for individual employees because they will have more free time to spend on pursing private interests, enjoying leisure activities or enjoying with families. Casting doubt on the claim, the lecturer floats the idea that working a shorter week may decrease employee's job stability and harm their chances for advancing their carrers, because companies might prefer to have five-day employees in management positions to ensure continuous and persistent supervision for the entire workweek.

- Revised Essay
The passage presents three pieces of evidence suggesting that a four-day workweek would benefit the economy as a whole, as well as individual companies and employees who choose this option. However, the lecturer contends that offering employees the option of a four-day workweek will not have the positive economic effects suggested in the reading for several reasons.
Firstly, the reading passage asserts that adopting a four-day workweek will increase employee efficiency and benefit companies. The lecturer, however, argues that firms may face significantly higher costs due to training new employees and providing additional medical benefits. Moreover, companies would need to invest in more office space and equipment, which could substantially decrease their profits.
Secondly, according to the passage, one of the primary benefits of offering a four-day workweek is reducing unemployment rates. Nonetheless, the professor rebuts this by stating that companies might ask their employees to work overtime or expect their four-day workers to complete the same amount of work they used to do in five days. This approach would not create additional jobs as suggested in the reading.
Finally, the reading passage maintains that a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees because they will have more free time to pursue private interests, enjoy leisure activities or spend time with family. Casting doubt on this claim, the lecturer posits that working a shorter week may decrease an employee's job stability and harm their chances for career advancement. Companies might prefer having five-day employees in management positions to ensure continuous and consistent supervision throughout the entire workweek. (261 words)

Section Title: 6.文章修订
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of a four-day workweek for employees and employers. The author of the article presents three arguments in favor of a four-day workweek, while the lecturer disagrees with these points and offers counterarguments.
Firstly, the author contends that a four-day workweek would increase company profits by reducing errors made by employees and allowing companies to hire more staff at lower salaries. However, the lecturer argues that hiring new employees would result in increased costs such as training fees, health insurance, and additional office space. Consequently, this casts doubt on the claim made in the reading passage that a shorter workweek would lead to increased profits.
Secondly, the author posits that a four-day workweek would create more job opportunities nationwide, as companies would pay less to current employees working reduced hours and require additional labor to complete tasks. The lecturer disputes this assertion by suggesting that companies might instead force their existing employees to complete their usual workload within four days or require them to work overtime. As such, this refutes the notion presented in the reading passage that a shorter workweek would lead to an increase in employment opportunities.
Lastly, while the author maintains that a four-day workweek is better for individual employees due to improved quality of life from having an extra day off each week, the lecturer highlights potential risks associated with working fewer hours. These risks include decreased job stability and limited opportunities for career advancement. The lecturer points out that companies may prefer full-time employees for management positions and be more likely to lay off part-time workers during economic downturns. This undermines the argument made in the reading passage about improved quality of life for those working shorter weeks.
In light of these counterarguments presented by the lecturer, it becomes evident that adopting a four-day workweek may not be as advantageous as initially suggested by the author of the article. (329 words)

Revised Essay:
The lecture challenges the reading passage's claims regarding the benefits of a four-day workweek for companies, the economy, and individual employees. The speaker presents counterarguments that cast doubt on the positive effects mentioned in the reading.
Firstly, the reading passage asserts that a shortened workweek would increase company profits as employees would be more rested and make fewer errors. Additionally, hiring more staff at 80% pay would not result in extra payroll costs. However, the lecturer disputes this by stating that introducing a four-day workweek could lead to increased expenses for companies. The speaker highlights that hiring new workers entails additional costs such as training and medical benefits, which could be similar for both full-time and part-time employees. Moreover, accommodating more employees requires extra office space and equipment, ultimately reducing company profits.
Secondly, the reading passage suggests that offering a four-day workweek option would reduce unemployment rates as companies would need to hire additional staff to cover workload shifts. Contrarily, the lecturer argues that this may not necessarily lead to more job opportunities. Companies might choose to ask their existing employees to work overtime instead of hiring new workers due to associated costs. Furthermore, there is a possibility that companies might expect their four-day employees to complete their usual five-day workload within a shorter timeframe, resulting in no additional jobs being created and increased pressure on current employees.
Lastly, while the reading passage claims that a four-day workweek would improve individual employees' quality of life by providing them with more free time for personal pursuits, the lecturer presents potential risks associated with this arrangement. Working fewer hours per week could negatively impact job stability and career advancement opportunities for these employees. They may be more vulnerable during economic downturns or overlooked for promotions in favor of full-time colleagues who can provide continuous coverage throughout the entire workweek.
In conclusion, the lecture casts doubt on several points made in the reading passage by presenting alternative perspectives on the effects of a four-day workweek on companies, the economy, and individual employees. (344 words)
