Aperçu de la Tâche

Dr.Gupta

We are looking this week at different ways businesses market their products and services, especially non-traditional methods. One thing that marketers pay close attention to is online reviews of their products. A business might include customer reviews on their website or carefully monitor the reviews on third-party sites. l would like you to discuss your own experiences with online reviews. Do you find them useful when deciding whether or not to buy aproduct or service? Why or why not?

Andrew

I think online reviews are a great source of information because they are written by ordinary customers who are like me. For instance, when I read a restaurant review by professional food critics, I'm not interested in some of the details that are included, like how the food is prepared. I'm more interested in aspects like the quality of the food and the service, which regular customers usually comment on.

Claire

To me, online reviews have some real problems. First people are more likely to post reviews after a bad experience than after a good one. As a result, what you read is often weighted toward the negative. Also, you have no way of knowing whether reviewers know what they are talking about or even if they actually bought and used the product they are reviewing.

The ongoing debate regarding the efficacy of online reviews in guiding purchasing decisions is certainly multifaceted. I concur with Andrew's assertion that online reviews can be unreliable, as customers often emphasize negative experiences. Furthermore, it is essential to consider that many companies place significant importance on their public reputation, leading to the proliferation of potentially biased reviews disguised as genuine customer feedback. Consequently, discerning the authenticity of these reviews becomes increasingly challenging for consumers. While Claire highlights the potential benefits of online reviews in providing insights into desired products or services, she overlooks the inherent subjectivity of such evaluations. This lack of objectivity may stem from incentives offered by companies, such as discounts or rewards, in exchange for favorable comments.

The complexity of the online review landscape presents both advantages and challenges for consumers seeking guidance in their purchasing decisions. While Andrew acknowledges the relatability of opinions expressed by fellow customers, it is crucial to recognize, as Claire points out, the potential skew towards negative experiences in these reviews. An intense debate has been unfolding upon the versatility of online reviews to assist purchase decisions. I firmly endorse Andrew's point that online reviews are useless because customers often lift negative comments about a bad experience.Another perspective that deserves attention is that numerous companies have been attaching increasing significance towards public reputation, and as a consequence.some seemingly reliable comments are indeed the advertisement of the companies. That said, the line between actual customer reviews and company ads is so blurred that it is hard for customers to figure out whether those reviews are telling the truth. While Clarie makes a pertinent point that online reviews can help customers get a better picture of their favored item, she fails to point out that those reviews tend to be less objective. The primary justification for this assertion lies in the fact that a customer may agree to write a positive remark if she is offered a 20% discount on the reward.
