Citizen Science Environmental scientists often undertake research projects that involve collecting large amounts of data or information. However, when data needs to be collected over a large geographical area or a long period of time, these projects can be difficult and expensive to carry out. Thus, some researchers rely on an approach called citizen science to successfully complete these projects. This approach involves compiling information that has been collected and provided by volunteers, or citizen scientists--ordinary people who may be interested in particular scientific topics. By taking advantage of citizens' existing interests and willingness to contribute to environmental projects, researchers can save money and time on data collection.
