Resumen de la Tarea

Professor

Today we'll talk about strategies companies can use to help reduce electronics waste. First, there's recycling. This typically involves separating the materials that electronics contain and reusing them. But this can be difficult and too expensive. Or perhaps the emphasis should be on making electronics last longer-for example, by requiring companies to offer replacement parts on the products they manufacture. Which approach do you think would be most effective?

Student A

Electronic products should be designed to last longer. I cracked the screen on my cell phone once and only needed a new screen. But the company that made the phone didn't sell replacement screens, so I couldn't get it repaired. I had to throw the phone away even though I could have used it longer with a new screen.

Student B

It'd be better to require companies to improve their recycling programs. For example, I need to dispose of an old computer I own because the hardware is outdated. But where I live, there are no facilities for electronics recycling. I know that some companies pay the costs for consumers to ship their old computers back to the company for recycling.

Section Title: 6 文章修订

While I understand the perspective of advocating for longer-lasting electronic products, I believe that focusing on improving recycling programs would be a more comprehensive solution to the issue of electronic waste. Not only would this provide a convenient option for individuals looking to dispose of their outdated devices, but it could also lead to the creation of new job opportunities in waste management. For instance, communities could establish electronic waste recycling initiatives, prompting residents to bring their old electronics to designated recycling facilities. This approach would generate local employment opportunities in roles such as electronic waste recyclers or processing technicians. Consequently, the environment would be better protected from the harmful effects of electronic waste, and fewer hazardous chemicals would be released into our surroundings. (128 words)

While I acknowledge the importance of addressing air pollutioin problems, I must agree with Claire that adding taxes on air travel will just cause financial burden to people, instead of solving environmental issues effectively. First, adding taxes to the price of tickets will be detrimental to the development of air industry. More people have to choose other transportation means such as highways and cars, resulting in less revenue of airline companies. However, regarding the long trip, people will have no choice. Secondly, even if adding taxes to tickets price, citizens' awareness of protecting environment will not be enhanced by this way. We can take other actions to improve people's awareness on environmental protection. For instance, the government can give subsidies to people who ride bikes to work.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

While addressing air pollution is undoubtedly crucial, I concur with Claire that imposing environmental taxes on air travel may primarily burden passengers without effectively tackling environmental concerns. Firstly, increasing ticket prices through additional taxes could hinder the growth of the aviation industry, as more individuals might opt for alternative transportation methods like cars and highways, leading to reduced revenue for airlines. Nonetheless, for long-distance travel, people may have limited options. Secondly, such taxes may not necessarily enhance citizens' environmental awareness. Instead, alternative measures could be employed to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment. For example, governments could provide subsidies to those who commute by bicycle or utilize other eco-friendly modes of transportation. (119 words)

While both Claire and Paul have their point, I agree with Paul. First, financial support to electric-car manufacturers would be cheaper for the governments. If public transport was enhanced, highways would be mostly unused and there might be a need for more roads for public transport. This would be very costly: some governments might not even have the money to do so. In contrast, the governments just have to give electric car makers the funds and benefits they need, and that is it. Also, rural people need their own vehicles to commute, otherwise it would be very difficult for them to go to places like stores or schools. Remember that governments funding electric vehicle makers would be much cheaper, and the huge amount of money that would have gone to make infrastructure would be used for other ways. Thus, I agree with Paul.

Thus, I agree with Paul.

Section Title: 6 Article Revision

In response to the professor's question, I concur with Paul's perspective that providing financial support to electric car manufacturers and consumers is a more innovative and sustainable approach. Firstly, this strategy would be more cost-effective for governments compared to the extensive investment required for improving public transportation infrastructure. Expanding public transportation may lead to underutilized highways and additional expenses for new roads dedicated to public transport. On the other hand, supporting electric vehicle production only necessitates allocating funds and incentives to relevant companies.

Moreover, it is crucial to consider the needs of rural populations who rely on personal vehicles for transportation due to limited access to public transit options. These individuals would not benefit from enhancements in urban public transportation systems but could significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions by adopting electric vehicles. Therefore, investing in electric vehicle technology not only presents a more affordable solution for governments but also addresses the diverse transportation requirements of both urban and rural communities. 3. Task completeness

The essay does a good job of addressing the specific requirements of the task. The writer expresses their opinion, supports it with relevant examples, and contributes to the discussion in their own words. However, there is room for improvement in elaborating on the viewpoint and providing more specific examples or details.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Provide more specific examples of how the government can use the revenue collected from taxes and fines to support environmentally friendly technology.

  • Discuss potential drawbacks or challenges that might arise from implementing higher taxes and larger fines on companies.

Examples:

  1. "For example, the government can initiate programs to develop more efficient engines by offering grants or subsidies to researchers working on innovative technologies."
  2. "However, it is important to consider that imposing high fines might also have negative consequences, such as companies relocating their operations to countries with less strict environmental regulations."

4. Essay structure and organization

The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The paragraphs are logically organized, focusing on specific points with supporting details. However, transitions between ideas could be improved for better coherence.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use transition words or phrases to connect ideas within paragraphs.

  • Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that introduces its main point.

Examples:

  1. "In addition to Claire's suggestion of imposing an environmental tax, I propose that..."

I concur with Claire's perspective that the government should impose higher taxes and larger fines on companies responsible for pollution. Additionally, I propose that the revenue generated from these penalties be allocated towards research and development of eco-friendly technologies and practices. For instance, the government could initiate programs aimed at creating more efficient engines or constructing wind and solar power plants. While Andrew raises a valid concern regarding the potential ineffectiveness of small fines, he fails to consider the possibility of significantly increasing these penalties to deter environmentally harmful behavior. As an example, the government could impose fines equivalent to one-fifth of a company's annual profits, which would likely have a substantial impact on their actions. (121 words)
