This week, we’ll study an issue that is often debated by economists. There are many large industries that, while providing significant economic benefits, engage in practices that result in environmental harm. Some would argue that economic success should never come at the cost of damage to the environment. Do you agree with this view? Why or why not?
Paul
I can’t say I agree. Everyone talks about protecting natural resources, but what about protecting humans? Humans need the ability to work and provide for their families, and sometimes this means creating jobs through industries that might contribute to pollution. Those industries can just be monitored by environmental agencies. That’s a win-win solution.
Kelly
I see your point, Paul, but I don’t think there are many industries that are so essential for the economy that their impact on the environment can be ignored or merely “monitored.” Continual environmental damage will one day lead to the extinction of species that are essentials to agriculture. That will endanger our food chain.

Paul presents a compelling argument in favor of economic benefits and job opportunity provided by the industries. At first glance, it seems reasonable that industries can not only support numerous families, but also be monitored by government. However, closer scrutiny of this claim reveals that it is less convincing. I tend to agree with Kelly as the influence on the environment outweighs the economy benefits. In other words, we cannot recklessly develop the economy regardless of the harm it provides. For instance, if we pour polluted effluent into the water and release too much carbon dioxide into the ari, just like what common industries do, it will cause the death of various fishes and the increasing of global temperature. Then we will need to spend more money and people to deal with these severe problems and make the enivronment clear and beautiful again. Therefore, when we develop our society, we must take the protection of our environment intoaccount.

Section Title: Balancing Economic Growth and Environmental Protection
While Paul's argument highlights the importance of economic benefits and job opportunities provided by industries, it may overlook the long-term consequences of environmental degradation. Although industries can support numerous families and be monitored by government agencies, the potential harm to the environment should not be underestimated. I concur with Kelly that the impact on the environment often outweighs economic benefits. In other words, we must not pursue economic development recklessly, disregarding its detrimental effects on our surroundings. For example, if industries continue to discharge polluted effluent into water bodies and release excessive carbon dioxide into the air, it will result in devastating consequences such as loss of aquatic life and global temperature increase. Consequently, we would need to invest more resources in addressing these severe problems and restoring our environment. Therefore, as we strive for societal progress, it is imperative that we prioritize environmental protection alongside economic growth. (156 words)

Personally, I hold the opinion that economic success can come at the cost of damage to the environment to some extent. Just as Paul has said, humans also need to make money for their families, because some people must live on the work, and the industries are quite important and necessary. Though this process may unavoidably harm the environment, if the industries can be monitored by agencies in the environmental field, the situation can grow better, and the pollution can be controlled effectively by this way. Furthermore, if the industries develop and make more breakthrough on some significant issues of the environment protection, there is more possibility for the industries to provide both economic and technological support to the environment. For example, the industries can use the budget to create the new efficient pesticide to eliminate the pests, and by using the high-tech products, though it costs some, the result is remarkable and dramatic. All in all, the economic success will help resolve the environment problems, so the cost is receptive.

6.文章修订
In my opinion, economic success can come at the cost of environmental damage to some extent, but there are ways to minimize this impact. As Paul mentioned, humans need to work and provide for their families, and industries are essential for creating jobs. Although these industries may inevitably harm the environment, effective monitoring by environmental agencies can help control pollution and improve the situation.
Moreover, industries can contribute to environmental protection by investing in research and development of cleaner technologies or renewable energy sources. This would not only reduce their environmental impact but also maintain economic growth. For instance, industries could allocate budgets towards developing more efficient pesticides that eliminate pests without causing significant harm to the ecosystem.
In summary, while economic success may come at an environmental cost, it is possible to strike a balance between development and preservation through effective monitoring and investment in cleaner technologies. This approach ensures that both human needs and environmental concerns are addressed in a sustainable manner. (165 words)
