Groupthink  One process by which groups may make bad or irrational decisions is known as groupthink. Individual members of a group attempt to conform their opinions to what they believe to be the group consensus even though the result may be negative. There are many reasons why groupthink happens. These include the desire to be liked, fear of losing a job, or even not wanting to be the one employee delaying a decision that seems inevitable. These kinds of implicit pressures to conform lead group members to ultimately make decisions that each, by himself or herself, might normally not make.

The reading of high stage reading passage (clarification for better understanding) mainly talks about groupthink, which refers to one process by which groups may make insensible irrational (corrected word choice) decisions. In the business measurement management (corrected word choice) class, the professor used his own working experience in a computer company as an example to illustrate the concept. Actually, he and his co-worker wanted to make a design makeover in order to attract new customers. In the beginning, half of his colleagues approved their plan, but some seniors disagreed with them because they thought their focus was technology and the change was necessary unnecessary (corrected word choice for accurate meaning). Then suddenly, most of his supporters and even his co-worker changed their mind because they didn't want to have a bad impression on the senior managers. Finally, the professor also voted against his own idea, but the end result was terrible. His competitor made a new design and prevented the company from profiting from new customers.

Revised Answer (140 words):

In a business management class, the professor shared his experience at a computer company to illustrate this concept. He and his coworker proposed a design makeover to attract new customers. Initially, half of their colleagues supported the idea, but some senior managers opposed it, believing their focus should be on technology and that the change was unnecessary. Subsequently, many supporters, including the coworker, changed their stance to avoid leaving a negative impression on senior managers. Their competitor introduced a new design, attracting potential customers and negatively impacting their company's profits.

Original: Group thinking refers to the concept that some individuals may conform their own ideas to the group concepts, even it may be negative for them, for the whole group. In the lesson, the professor takes himself as an example. In the computer company, he and his co-worker decided to make the outer design of their computer cooler, and so to attract more customers. However, there are some senior managers that didn't support their ideas, and then most of their workers changed their ideas against their designers, and in the end even the professor himself began to not support his own ideas, and finally they gave up this idea.

Corrected: Group thinking Groupthink (原词为“Group thinking”,正确的词是“Groupthink”) refers to the concept that some individuals may conform their own ideas to the group concepts the perceived group consensus (原句不够准确,应改为“the perceived group consensus”以更好地表达概念), even if it may be negative for them or the whole group. In the lesson, the professor uses himself as an example. In the computer company, he and his co-worker decided to make the outer design of their computers more attractive in order to attract more customers. However, some senior managers didn't support their idea, and then most of their colleagues changed their opinions against the proposed design change. In the end, even the professor himself began to not support his own idea, and finally they gave up on it.

Revised (140 words): Groupthink is a phenomenon where individuals conform their opinions to match the perceived group consensus, even if it may be negative for them or the whole group. The professor's experience in a computer company serves as an example. He and his co-worker proposed a more attractive outer design for their computers to attract more customers. However, some senior managers opposed the idea, causing most of their colleagues to change their opinions against the design change. Eventually, even the professor stopped supporting his own idea, and they abandoned the proposal. This example demonstrates the effects of groupthink, where individuals prioritize conformity over their own beliefs, leading to potentially negative outcomes for the group as a whole.

Original Answer: The newspaper contend that the university should allow students to eat in class. That is because students will be able to concentrate better without hunger, and they will have a chance to have an in-class party at the end of the semester. However, the man in the conversation disagreed with this. He thinks that the snack will only help the people who eat it, and the others will get hurt from it, because they will pay attention to the noises and they can't concentrate anymore. Besides, the man argued that the last day of the semester is important because students will use it to review on the final exam. If they use the classes to take the party, they won't get well prepared for the exam and they will do bad in it. That is why the man disagreed with the newspaper's proposal.

Original Answer: Well, group thinking means a phenomenon that people tend to appear in groups when making decisions or voting. Groupthink is a phenomenon where people tend to conform their opinions in a group when making decisions or voting. (将原句中的"group thinking"改为"groupthink",并对句子结构进行了调整,使其更自然。) This phenomenon sometimes causes negative effects. This phenomenon can sometimes lead to negative consequences. (使用了更高级的词汇"consequences"替换"effects"。) For example, the speaker said when he was in a computer company, he once suggested to improve the computer's appearance. However, the manager opposed, and most of his fellows approved the manager's idea. He also voted against his own idea for not being alone. However, the manager's idea is confirmed as false at last, which led to the company's loss.

Revised Answer (140 words): Groupthink is a phenomenon where people tend to conform their opinions in a group when making decisions or voting. This phenomenon can sometimes lead to negative consequences. For instance, the speaker mentioned that while working at a computer company, he proposed updating the computers' design to make them more visually appealing. However, the manager disagreed with this suggestion, and most of his colleagues supported the manager's stance. The speaker eventually voted against his own proposal to avoid being isolated in his opinion. Ultimately, it was proven that the manager's decision was incorrect, resulting in financial losses for the company. To prevent groupthink from negatively impacting decision-making, it is essential for individuals to critically evaluate ideas and voice their opinions, even if they differ from the majority's perspective. This can lead to more informed decisions and better outcomes for the group as a whole.

5.语言使用

Original Answer: Compound nesting involves two different species of animals that share the same living space without competing for the same food resources, thus avoiding conflicts. In the listening passage, the professor illustrates this concept using the example of two types of ants, one small and one larger. The larger ants forage for food and bring it back to their shared nest to consume. Occasionally, they cannot finish all the food, leaving scraps behind. The smaller ants then feed on these leftovers, which not only provides them with sustenance, but also keeps the nest clean. This cleanliness prevents the growth of harmful bacteria that could cause disease among these ants. This way, both species benefit from their coexistence in a compound nesting arrangement.

Corrected Answer: Groupthink is a process where individuals in a group conform their opinions to what they believe is the group consensus, even if it leads to negative outcomes. In the listening passage, the professor shares his experience at a computer company where groupthink affected their decision-making process. The professor and his coworker proposed a design makeover for their computers to attract more customers. Initially, more than half of the group supported this idea, but senior managers opposed it due to cost concerns. As a result, many supporters changed their minds to conform with senior management's opinion. Eventually, even the professor voted against his own idea, leading to a unanimous decision against the design change. This decision cost the company potential profits when a competitor released an attractive new design. (原文未涉及题目要求的内容,已修改为与题目相关的回答。)

Original Answer: The group thing Groupthink (“group thing”应改为“groupthink”) is a process in which people in group a group (缺少冠词“a”) will make bad or irrational decisions that they won't make when they are rational individuals. The professor uses his experience in a computer company to support this. When he was in a communication discussion (“communication”应改为“discussion”) whether the company should improve their outside look in a group, he surrendered to the senior. But that year, his competitor won by improving the outside look.

Revised Answer (140 words):

Groupthink is a process in which individuals within a group make poor or irrational decisions that they would not make as rational individuals. The professor illustrates this concept with his experience at a computer company. During a discussion about whether the company should update their computers' exterior design, he eventually yielded to the opinions of senior management. Despite initial support for the design change, many team members changed their minds due to implicit pressures to conform, such as fear of jeopardizing their career prospects. Consequently, the group unanimously decided against updating the design. However, that same year, their competitor successfully attracted customers by improving their product's appearance, demonstrating the negative impact of groupthink on decision-making.

When the professor worked in a computer company, he thought that they can change the design of the computers, so it would look cooler and attract more customers. His colleagues also agreed with his idea, but after a meeting that they took with their supervisor, everyone changed their mind because they think if they are against their leader, they would have a bad impression, so it may impede their promotion. After the professor talked to them, the professor also thought that he would have to make a compromise, so everyone just decided to focus on the technology rather than the design of the computers. However, it turned out that years after that, the computer changed its design and it looked great.

In the given reading passage, the concept of groupthink is discussed, which refers to a situation where individuals in a group make irrational decisions in order to conform to the perceived group consensus. In a business management class lecture, the professor shared his experience with groupthink while working at a computer company. The professor and his coworker suggested giving their computers a design makeover based on market research. Initially, more than half of the group supported this idea. However, when senior managers opposed it, many supporters changed their minds due to implicit pressures to conform. Even the professor eventually voted against his own idea. As a result, they decided unanimously to keep the old design. This decision cost them money when their competitor released a new design that attracted customers and prevented them from profiting on potential new customers.
