Task Overview
Reading Passage
Dormancy During periods when climate conditions are extremely harsh and food and water are scarce, some animals survive by entering into a state of inactivity known as dormancy: the animal takes measures to avoid exposure to the elements, and its bodily processes slow down. Because dormant animals are not physically active, they have lttle need for nourishment. They can, therefore, remain in a dormant state for long periods of time until more favorable environmental conditions return.

Original Answer: Dormancy is a measure that animals use to avoid exposure to the elements and slow down body process during harsh conditions. Dormancy is a strategy that animals employ to reduce exposure to harsh elements and slow down bodily processes during extreme conditions. (将“measure”改为“strategy”,使表达更自然;将“body process”改为“bodily processes”,使语法更准确;将“harsh conditions”改为“extreme conditions”,词汇更高级) The lecture gives an example of longfish lungfish (拼写错误,应为“lungfish”) survive in a dried up lake. Before the lake dried up completely, the fish dig holes in mud and buries itself. Thus, the mud will protect longfish lungfish (拼写错误,应为“lungfish”) from heat and keep its body moist. Because the lake dries up, longfish lungfish (拼写错误,应为“lungfish”) nearly run out of food supply. Fortunately, they burn very little energy for its breathing and heartbeat slowdown, which lets longfish lungfish (拼写错误,应为“lungfish”) necessary to wait the rain to return for years. This example explains how dormancy helps animals to survive in harsh climate and wait for the climate change to adapt their living.
Revised Answer (140 words):
Dormancy is a strategy that animals employ to reduce exposure to harsh elements and slow down bodily processes during extreme conditions. The lecture provides an example of lungfish surviving in a dried-up lake. Before the lake completely dries up, the lungfish digs holes in the mud and buries itself, allowing the mud to protect it from heat and keep its body moist. As the lake dries up, the lungfish's food supply dwindles. Fortunately, they consume very little energy due to their slowed breathing and heartbeat, enabling the lungfish to endure long periods without food while waiting for rain to return. This example illustrates how dormancy enables animals to survive in harsh climates and patiently await more favorable conditions for their survival.
