Cumulative Culture Not all animal behaviors are instinctual. Some animals display culture in the sense that within a particular group of animals, a new behavior may arise and then be learned by other members of the group. Recently, some scientists have suggested that certain animals may even be capable of complex form of culture called cumulative culture. With cumulative culture a shared behavior that may have benefits is modifled and added to and becomes increasingly complex over time. The behavior may first be learned by members of the group after one individual begins performing it. Later, future generations pass on the behavior and continue to modify it, increasing its benefits of effectiveness.

Revised Answer (140 words): Cumulative culture is a complex form of culture that can become more intricate as new behaviors emerge within a group of animals. For instance, the monkeys' potato-eating behavior became increasingly complex as new behaviors arose. Initially, a male monkey washed the potatoes in river water to remove the sand from them. Subsequently, an increasing number of monkeys adopted this behavior and started washing potatoes in seawater for improved taste. Eventually, some monkeys started stealing washed potatoes, leading others to wash potatoes in secluded seawater spots. This increasingly complex behavior exemplifies cumulative culture. Through these adaptations and refinements, the monkeys' potato-washing ritual demonstrates how behaviors can be shared, improved, and become more sophisticated over time within a group, highlighting the concept of cumulative culture.
