Task Overview

Professor

We have recently read in our textbook that local or regional governments often need to reduce the amount of money budgeted in some areas in response to economic shortfalls. For instance a city council may make the difficult decision to spend less on a certain public service for its residents. In your view in what one or two areas should local or reginal governments reduce spending when budget cuts are necessary? why?

Claire

My city has a lot of parks that require a lot of upkeep. If there‘s a need to reduce expenses, the city could make changes to the parks that make them less expensive to maintain. For example, grass lawns, which need to be cut weekly, could be replaced with other plant species that do not need to be cut frequently.

Paul

Last time I went to City Hall to take care of some business, I saw a lot of employees standing around and doing nothing. I think the local government may be employing too many workers. It was just an impression I had, but I wonder if this is something that should be reviewed.

While I can see Claire’s point that she thinks the cost of keeping park run successfully are isn’t necessary, I am inclined to agree with Paul’s perspective that we should reduce the number of government staff. As mentioned by Paul, he points out that there are many government people are hanging around, it will cost a lot of waste of money. Sometimes we only need a few people to do government works, however if we do not need a large number of people only in the government, we can save money to other areas which is more valuable. Apart from what Paul has raised, I added that the process of technology will help government to save human resource in the City Hall. For example AI can help people to handle some office work which traditionally needed many people. On the contrary, if we do not embrace the technology change in the current world we may need more and more government staff to handle more complex situation in our society. Therefore, if we can lower salary cost of government staff and use technology to improve the efficiency in the Government work, we can save a lot of money for better usage.

While I understand Claire's concern regarding the high maintenance costs of parks, I find myself agreeing more with Paul's suggestion to reduce the number of government staff.

As Paul observed, there seem to be numerous government employees idling around, which could lead to a significant waste of resources. In many cases, only a few individuals are needed to complete government tasks; by reducing the workforce, funds could be redirected towards more valuable endeavors.

In addition to Paul's point, I would like to emphasize the role of technology in potentially streamlining City Hall operations. For instance, artificial intelligence (AI) could assist in handling office work that traditionally required multiple personnel. Conversely, if we fail to embrace technological advancements in today's rapidly evolving world, we may find ourselves needing an ever-growing number of government staff to manage increasingly complex societal issues.

Hence, by decreasing salary expenses for government employees and utilizing technology to enhance efficiency within governmental operations, significant savings can be achieved and allocated towards more pressing needs. (170 words)
