Task Overview
Reading Passage
Systems Thinking Companies have designed new and improved ways to solve problems within their organizations. Rather than seeking a simple cause and a direct solution to problems, companies are now using an approach called systems thinking. Systems thinking involves solving problems long-term by considering the "big picture," that is, how the interaction of many different parts of a large system may contribute to a problem. Companies use systems thinking because, even though it may produce complex solutions that take a long time to implement, it is an effective way to solve problems and has a greater long-term benefit to the company.

The professor discusses systems thinking, an approach that involves solving problems by considering how the interaction of different components within a large system may contribute to an issue. In the example provided, a company faced challenges with employee absenteeism and hired a consultant for assistance. The consultant's research revealed that employees were missing work due to health issues stemming from poor eating habits and lack of exercise. To address these underlying factors, the consultant suggested constructing an on-site gym for employees to utilize and introducing nutritious meal options in the cafeteria. After implementing these changes for a year, the company observed a significant improvement in employee attendance, demonstrating the effectiveness of a systems thinking approach to problem-solving.
