In 1939 an archaeological excavation in southeastern England revealed a grave dated to the seventh century C.E. The grave contained a 13-meter-long ship filled with jewelry and other precious objects. The presence of such impressive artifacts made it likely that the person buried in the grave had been one of the kings who ruled the region, known as East Anglia. While it has long been unclear which East Anglian king this was, most historians now believe that the grave belonged to King Raedwald. First, the dating of the objects seems to fit the date of King Raedwald's death. Gold coins found in the grave have been dated to the 620s, and there is a historical record that indicates that King Raedwald died in 624. Such close coincidence of the dates strongly supports the theory that the grave is King Raedwald's. Second, the grave is so grand and the objects it contained are so splendid that it appears that the person buried in the grave was a particularly powerful king. This also fits with what is known about King Raedwald. Raedwald ws more powerful than East Anglian kings who came before and after him; in fact, Raedwald was so powerful that kings from other regions of England paid him tribute and were subject to his rule. Third, Raedwald was the first East Anglian king to convert to Christianity; earlier East Anglian kings were adherents of other religions. The grave contains sliver bowls accompanied by two spoons; the spoons are engraved with 'Saul' and 'Paul,' the two names of one of the most famous early Christians who was a convert himself. These artifacts seem to symbolize King Raedward's own conversion to Christianity.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The reading and the lecture both discuss whether the grave mentioned in the reading belonged to King Raedwald. The reading presents three arguments supporting the idea that the grave is King Raedwald's, while the lecturer challenges each of these arguments.

Firstly, the lecture contends that both the date of King Raedwald’s death and the gold coins found in the grave are uncertain, making it impossible to accurately match the objects in the grave with King Raedwald’s death. This contradicts the first hypothesis made in the reading, which states that there is a close coincidence between the dates of gold coins found in the grave and King Raedwald's death according to historical records.

Secondly, the lecture disputes the argument made in the reading passage that suggests that because of its grandeur and many splendid objects found within it, this particular grave likely belonged to a powerful king like Raedwald. The lecturer argues that it cannot be determined whether King Raedwald was more powerful than other kings because there are few well-preserved graves from this period for comparison, and many objects have been removed from graves by robbers over time. Thus, it is difficult to compare these graves and determine whether this particular grave is more impressive than others.

Lastly, the lecturer points out that burying a person with a ship and precious possessions was not a Christian burial practice but rather one associated with earlier non-Christian kings. This challenges another hypothesis made in reading which states that artifacts such as silver spoons engraved with Christian names found within this grave symbolize King Raedwald's conversion to Christianity. The lecturer suggests that these spoons may have simply been gifts from Christian individuals and do not necessarily indicate that King Raedwald himself was a Christian convert. (295 words)

The author presents three reasons to support the viewpoint that the host of the grave found in southeastern England is King Raedwald. Nevertheless, the lecturer contends that it may not belong to him and opposes the arguments in the reading. First and foremost, the author suggests that the dating of treasures burried in the grave matches the date of King Raedwald's death. However, the lecturer disagrees that, claiming that we can't accurately pinpoint the date of death of King Raedwald. Although some studies show that he died in 624, other records indicate that the King died 20 years later. What's more, some researches state that the detecting result from the coins in the grave shows that it appeared several years later than King Raedwald's death. Additionally, the author asserts that the grave is plenty of treasures and should belongs to an ambitious king, matching the fact that King Raedwald was the most powerful king at that time. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this with the point that few graves during that period have been excavated and most of them suffered from robbery, remaining little objects in the graves. We can't make sure that this grave is more splendid than others. Finally, the author maintains that the stuffs found in the grave suggests that the host should be a Christianity, and the Rardwald was the first and the only king of Christianity during that time. Oppositely, the lecturer critiques, arguing that there are other objects in the grave doesn't symbolize Christianity, and may be the spoons, which have the characteristics of Christianity, were sent to King Raedwald as a gift since they were made of silver.

The lecture casts doubt on the reading's identification of the seventh-century grave as King Raedwald's. Firstly, it questions the dating evidence. While the reading correlates the coins' date with Raedwald's death around 624, the lecture notes discrepancies in both the king's death date and the coins' dating, making the match uncertain. Secondly, the lecture challenges the assumption of the grave's exceptional nature. The reading's claim of the grave's grandeur, suggesting a powerful king like Raedwald, is undermined by the lack of comparable graves for context. Many graves from that era were looted, rendering it difficult to assert the uniqueness of this grave. Lastly, the lecture disputes the Christian connection. The reading interprets the presence of Christian-named spoons as indicative of Raedwald's Christian faith. However, the lecture counters that the burial's non-Christian style and the potential for the spoons being mere valuable gifts weaken this argument. Overall, the lecture raises significant doubts about the grave's association with King Raedwald, challenging the reading's conclusions on dating, the grave's relative grandeur, and religious symbolism.

The reading and lecture both delve into the topic of the grave's owner in southeastern England. While the reading contends that the grave may belong to King Raedwald, the lecture challenges this suggesting that the reasons are not convincing enough. First, the writer claims that gold coins could be dated back to the 620s, which is close to the death time of King Raedwald. However, the professor refutes this view, arguing that we could not know the acurate date of King Raedwald's death. One historical material writes the date of death is 624s, while others say the death year is 25 earlier, 599s. In other words, the gold coins are later than the death date of King Raedwald, so the grave could not belong to him. Second, the article moves on talking about the grave itself indicating that it belonged to a powerful king. In contrast, the professor maintains an opposite opinion, stating that graves may not be able to represent the king's power. She further explains that we don't have sufficient graves to compare to, and some objects may be removed by thieves, so we are not able to compare one king's power with others by graves. So the grave may not belong to King. Finally, the writer states that the silver bowls and spoons revealed that its owner is a Christian. Contrary to the reading's review, the professor believes that it may not show the owner's belief it may be a gift. So the owner keep it in the grave just because it is made by silver.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The reading and lecture both explore the subject of the grave's owner in southeastern England. While the reading posits that the grave likely belongs to King Raedwald, the lecture disputes this assertion, suggesting that the evidence is not sufficiently convincing. Firstly, the author claims that gold coins found in the grave can be dated back to the 620s, which closely aligns with King Raedwald's purported time of death. However, the professor counters this argument by highlighting the uncertainty surrounding King Raedwald's actual date of death. One historical source suggests a death date of 624, while another places it 25 years earlier in 599. Consequently, given this discrepancy, it is impossible to definitively link the gold coins to King Raedwald's demise.

Secondly, the article asserts that the grandeur of the grave implies its occupant was a powerful king. In contrast, the professor contends that graves may not accurately represent a king's power or influence. She further explains that there are insufficient well-preserved graves from that period for comparison purposes and acknowledges that many valuable objects may have been removed by robbers over time. As such, it is not possible to determine if one king was more powerful than another based solely on their respective graves.

Lastly, the author states that silver bowls and engraved spoons found in the grave indicate its owner was a Christian convert like King Raedwald. Contrary to this view, however, the professor argues that these artifacts do not necessarily confirm religious beliefs; they could have been gifts from a Christian individual rather than personal possessions reflecting faith. Thus, their presence in the grave might be due to their material value rather than any symbolic significance related to Christianity. (284 words)

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The passage presents three reasons supporting the belief that the discovered grave belongs to King Raedwald; however, the lecture challenges these arguments, claiming they are unconvincing.

Firstly, the passage asserts that the dating of objects in the grave aligns with King Raedwald's death, with only a four-year discrepancy. In contrast, the lecture contends that the actual date of King Raedwald's death is uncertain, as some sources suggest he died 25 years earlier than recorded in historical texts.

Secondly, the passage posits that the grandeur of the grave indicates it must belong to a powerful king. However, the lecture refutes this claim by stating that only a small number of graves from that period have been discovered and many precious objects may have been removed by robbers over time. Consequently, researchers cannot definitively determine if this particular grave is more impressive than others from that era.

Lastly, while the passage argues that certain objects found in the grave are associated with Christianity and thus support King Raedwald's conversion to Christianity, the lecture counters this claim. It suggests that burial practices such as placing a ship and valuable possessions in a grave were not Christian customs but rather associated with earlier non-Christian kings. Furthermore, it contends that engraved spoons bearing Christian names do not necessarily indicate that their owner was Christian; they could have been received as gifts from Christians and placed in the grave due to their silver composition and value at that time.
