Aperçu de la Tâche

Texte de Lecture

A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature—novels, plays, and poems—than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself. While there has been a decline in book reading generally, the decline has been especially sharp for literature. This is unfortunate because nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Literature encourages us to exercise our imaginations, empathize with others, and expand our understanding of language. So by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits.Unfortunately, missing out on the benefits of literature is not the only problem. What are people reading instead? Consider the prevalence of self-help books on lists of best sellers. These are usually superficial poorly written, and intellectually undemanding. Additionally, instead of sitting down with a challenging novel, many persons are now more likely to turn on the television, watch a music video, or read a Web page. Clearly, diverting time previously spent in reading literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general. The trend of reading less literature is all the more regrettable because it is taking place during a period when good literature is being written. There are many talented writers today, but they lack an audience. This fact is bound to lead publishers to invest less in literature and so support fewer serious writers. Thus, the writing as well as the reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's readers.

Exemple d'Utilisateur

The lecture challenges the reading's negative view on the decline of literature reading by presenting counterarguments that cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage. The speaker argues that non-literature books can be intellectually stimulating, that there is cultural value in other forms of expression, and that the difficulty of modern literature and authors' responsibility should be considered. Firstly, the lecturer contends that a book does not have to be literature to be intellectually stimulating. Contrary to the reading passage's claim that literature is the only source of intellectual stimulation, the speaker points out that other genres, such as science writing, history, and political analysis, can be just as creative and well-written as novels or plays. These non-literature books can also stimulate the imagination, thus providing similar benefits to literature. Secondly, the lecture disputes the reading passage's assertion that the decline in literature reading has lowered the level of culture in general. The speaker argues that there is plenty of culturally valuable material that is not written, such as music and movies. These non-literary activities do not lower cultural standards, as the reading passage suggests. Instead, the lecturer posits that culture has changed, and there are now many forms of expression available other than novels and poems. Some of these creative forms may even speak more directly to contemporary concerns than literature does. Lastly, the lecture questions the reading passage's claim that the decline in literature reading is due to poor standards of today's readers. The speaker suggests that the difficulty of modern literature and the authors' responsibility should be considered. Many modern literary works are intentionally difficult to understand, which may deter readers. The lecturer also points out that there is not much reason to believe that earlier generations of readers would have read a lot of today's literature either, implying that the authors themselves may be at fault for the decline in literature reading. Overall, the lecture provides compelling counterarguments that cast doubt on the reading passage's negative view of the decline in literature reading, highlighting the intellectual stimulation from non-literature books, the cultural value in other forms of expression, and the role of modern literature's difficulty and authors' responsibility.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The lecture challenges the negative view presented in the reading passage regarding the decline of literature among young people, casting doubt on specific points made in the passage.

Firstly, the professor highlights that there are other types of books that can also provide intellectual stimulation, contrary to the passage's claim that literature is the only type of reading capable of stimulating imagination. Examples such as science writing, historical analysis, and political commentary are also valuable forms of reading with good writing quality, providing creativity and intellectual stimulation.

Secondly, the reading passage asserts that shifting from literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered cultural standards. However, the professor contends that choosing alternative forms of expression rather than plays and novels is not indicative of a decline in cultural level. These alternative forms can be just as creative and more directly address contemporary concerns than literature does.

Finally, the passage suggests that a decline in literature authors should be attributed to a smaller audience, leading to less investment from publishers in the field and reduced support for talented authors. In contrast, the lecture argues that much modern literature is intentionally difficult to understand; therefore, even earlier generations would not have had many readers for these works. The audience should not be solely blamed; modern writers must also take responsibility for this issue. (224 words)

However, the lecture in the listening material contends that a decrease in literature consumption may not be caused by readers and challenges the points made in the reading passage.

Firstly, the author claims that people prefer best-selling books which are more superficial and less intellectually stimulating compared to traditional literature. These non-literary books can also stimulate people's imagination and broaden their perspectives. Thus, it is incorrect to assume that someone who isn't reading literature isn't reading a good book.

Furthermore, the lecture disputes the author's argument that new forms of entertainment such as listening to music and watching TV have replaced literature reading, leading to a decline in cultural level. The reading passage argues that the decline in literature's popularity among young generations leads to a significant deterioration in culture. However, the lecture casts doubt on these claims by presenting counterarguments that challenge their validity.

First, the reading passage contends that by reading less literature, the public misses out on benefits such as imagination and understanding of language. On the contrary, the lecture suggests that other forms of written text could also stimulate imagination, such as science writing, history, and political analysis. These genres can be just as creative as literature.

Second, the author claims that people nowadays often read poorly written literature, which is intellectually undemanding and negatively impacts society. In contrast, the professor disputes this by asserting that there are various cultural forms available to people today, such as music and movies. These forms of expression can be appreciated through seeing or listening rather than reading and are not a waste of time because culture is ever-changing.

Finally, the reading passage posits that individuals prefer to divert their time to entertainment activities instead of reading literature, resulting in a reduced reading rate. Nevertheless, the lecture points out that we should not blame readers for this trend since older literary works can be difficult to understand compared with modern art forms. Furthermore, there is no compelling reason to revive their popularity; thus, moving away from them may be an appropriate response. (235 words)

People change their ways and forms to experience culture while music and movies are more direct than literature. Therefore, the professor effectively refutes this theory from the reading passage. Lastly, the reading passage proposes that lack of audience leads to the fewer support to serious writers and less invest. However, the professor disagree with this by claiming that the readers should not be blamed while the authors are the exact reason. Many serious literature books are hard to understanding, which are not appealing to readers. Thus, the professor cast doubt on this theory from the reading passage.

Firstly, the lecture challenges the notion that less literature is being read by young people. The speaker asserts that other forms of writing, such as scientific books and political analysis, can be just as creative and intellectually stimulating as novels, plays, and poems. The passage should not dismiss these alternative forms of writing and assume their lack of value.

Secondly, the passage states that instead of reading novels, people are more likely to watch movies or listen to music. The lecture refutes this argument by stating that these other forms of entertainment are also culturally valuable and do not lower cultural standards.

Lastly, the passage argues that many talented writers lack an audience due to publishers investing less in literature. The lecture disagrees with this point by suggesting that authors nowadays intentionally make their works difficult to understand, causing the public to lose interest in reading them. This cannot be blamed solely on readers for not engaging with literature.

The set of materials focuses on the debate that people are reading less literature than before. The reading material proposes that this trend is horrible that it would do harm to the reading public, the culture, and the future of the literature. Through relevant reasons and examples, the lecture refutes the viewpoints stated in the reading passage and maintains that the author's views are flawed. To begin with, the speaker confutes the writer's deduction that nothing else could offer imagination stimulation than literature. She directly points out that good books should not restrict boundaries on literature, since science fiction and music are also positive resources for exercising the imagination. The public still can have plenty of ways to improve their horizons. Obviously, this forms a sharp contradiction against what is put forward by the writer. Second, the passage brings up that less reading of literature will lower the level of culture. Again, this is retorted by the lecture, which asserts that culture has changed now and its form is not the written style. Lots of music and movies are also well-performed and they should be treated as brilliant cultural forms. This further exhibits suspicion of the example in this reading. Finally, the reading passage states that lots of talented writers lack corresponding audiences due to fewer publications. To render disproof, the lecture reveals that it's true that the publishers invest less and support fewer writers. However, it's not the reader's fault since the writer's work is difficult to read and understand. Thereupon, the lecture overthrows the notion of the passage again. To summarize, the speaker squarely opposes all the possible explanations listed in the reading material and provides counterarguments in all corresponding aspects. The lecture casts doubt on all those ways proposed by the reading passage.

3.Task completeness The essay does a good job of summarizing the points made in the lecture and explaining how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage. However, there is room for improvement in terms of clarity and precision. The essay could benefit from a more concise summary of the main points, as well as a clearer connection between the lecture's arguments and the reading passage's claims.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Clearly state the main points from both the reading passage and lecture.

  • Provide more specific examples from both sources to support your analysis.

Examples:

  1. Instead of saying "Through relevant reasons and examples, the lecture refutes...", you could write "The lecture refutes these claims by providing evidence that other forms of writing, such as science fiction and history books, can also stimulate imagination."

  2. Instead of saying "This further exhibits suspicion of the example in this reading.", you could write "This demonstrates that alternative forms of cultural expression, such as music and movies, can also contribute to cultural enrichment."

4.Essay structure and organization The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point with supporting details. However, there is room for improvement in terms of transitions between ideas and paragraphs.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use transition words or phrases to connect ideas within paragraphs.

  • Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that introduces its main point.

Examples:

  1. In your second paragraph, you could add a transition phrase like "In contrast" at the beginning to show that you are presenting an opposing view: "In contrast, the speaker confutes..."

  2. For your third paragraph's topic sentence, you could write "The lecture also challenges the reading passage's claim that less reading of literature will lower the level of culture by arguing that culture has evolved to include other forms of expression, such as music and movies."

The reading passage highlights the negative consequences and causes of the declining trend in literature consumption. However, the professor argues that the points presented in the reading are not persuasive.

Firstly, the reading asserts that literature is unparalleled in providing intellectual stimulation. In contrast, the professor contends that alternative reading materials can also foster creativity. For example, high-quality science fiction and research publications can stimulate our imagination in various ways.

Furthermore, the reading suggests that people's shift towards watching TV, music videos, or browsing web pages has led to a decline in cultural standards. The professor refutes this by stating that engaging with other forms of media does not necessarily indicate a degradation of culture. Specifically, movies and music can contribute to shaping diverse cultural perspectives. Additionally, online resources can offer more direct information for better comprehension.

Lastly, while the reading implies that a lack of audience results in reduced support for serious writers due to decreased publisher investment, the professor presents an opposing view. The professor posits that it is unfair to blame readers for this trend since contemporary literary works are often more challenging to understand. In earlier times when books were more accessible, there was a larger readership and audience base. (207 words)

Nevertheless, the lecturer in the listening part holds an opposite attitude towards this view. First and foremost, the author argues that reading literature encourages people to exercise their imaginations and expand their understanding of language. So by reading less literature the reading public is missing out on important benefits. However, the lecturer in the listening offers an opposite stance that books don't have to be literature to be intellectual stimulating. Science reports, history books and political analysis are all of high quality and those kinds of books are just as creative and well written as literature. They can also be stimulating. It's unreasonable to assume someone who is not reading literature is not reading good books. In addition, the lecturer casts doubt on the author's another point that reading self-help books on lists of best sellers and spending time on trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general; the lecturer also demonstrates that there are many culturally valuable materials available for people, such as music and movies. It is ridiculous to say it is a waste of time listening to brilliant music and watching good movies. Those activities would definitely not lower the level of culture in general.  Finally, the author's third reason that due to lacking an audience, talented writers often goes unrewarded and few publishers would be willing to invest in literature, thus the writing as well the reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's reader is also counteracted by the lecturer who points out that we should not be so quick to blame the audience. The decline in literature reading is primarily due to the writing style of the authors. Nowadays, authors are intended to write difficult works, which is really hard for readers to understand. If earlier generations of readers were reading today's literature, they would not understand either.

3.Task completeness The essay does a good job of addressing the specific requirements of the task by summarizing the points made in the lecture and explaining how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage. However, there is room for improvement in terms of language use and clarity. To improve, try to use more precise vocabulary and avoid repetition. Additionally, ensure that your sentences are clear and concise.

Example 1: Original: "It's unreasonable to assume someone who is not reading literature is not reading good books." Improved: "It's incorrect to assume that someone who doesn't read literature isn't engaging with intellectually stimulating material."

Example 2: Original: "Nowadays, authors are intended to write difficult works, which is really hard for readers to understand." Improved: "Contemporary authors often produce complex works that can be challenging for readers to comprehend."

4.Essay structure and organization The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point and provides supporting details from both the reading passage and lecture. However, there could be better transitions between ideas and paragraphs to improve coherence.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use transition words or phrases at the beginning of each paragraph to signal a shift in focus.

  • Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that summarizes its main point.

Example 1: Original: "In addition, the lecturer casts doubt on the author's another point..." Improved: "Furthermore, the lecturer challenges the author's assertion that..."

Example 2: Original: "Finally, the author's third reason...is also counteracted by the lecturer who points out..." Improved: "Lastly, the lecturer refutes the author's third argument by highlighting that..."

  1. Revised Essay

The reading passage posits that the decline in literature reading has negative consequences for the reading public, culture, and the future of literature itself. However, the lecturer in the listening passage presents a contrasting perspective on this issue.

Firstly, the author of the reading passage claims that literature provides unique intellectual stimulation, encouraging readers to exercise their imaginations and expand their understanding of language. By reading less literature, they argue that readers are missing out on these benefits. Contrarily, the lecturer contends that books do not have to be classified as literature to be intellectually stimulating. They assert that other genres such as science reports, history books, and political analyses can be just as creative and well-written as literary works. Thus, it is unreasonable to assume that someone who is not reading literature is not engaging with good books.

Secondly, the author suggests that people are turning to self-help books and trivial forms of entertainment instead of literature, leading to a decline in cultural standards. The lecturer disputes this point by highlighting various culturally valuable materials available for consumption beyond literary works like music and movies. They argue that it is absurd to consider listening to excellent music or watching quality films a waste of time or an activity that lowers cultural standards.

Lastly, the author asserts that talented writers lack an audience due to declining interest in literature which discourages publishers from investing in literary works. This results in a decline in both writing and reading of literature due to poor standards among contemporary readers. The lecturer challenges this notion by stating that it is unfair to blame readers for this trend. They explain that modern authors often write difficult-to-understand works which may contribute significantly to the decline in literature readership. The lecturer posits that even earlier generations would struggle with comprehending today's literary works due to their complexity. (313 words)

The reading passage asserts that young people are reading far less literature, resulting in negative consequences for the reading public, culture, and the future of literature. Conversely, the lecture challenges these points by offering counterarguments.

Firstly, the reading passage contends that there has been a particularly sharp decline in book reading for literature, which is unfortunate since nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. However, the professor disputes this notion. Books other than literature can also be intellectually stimulating, such as those on science writing, political analysis, and so forth. These books are often well-written and as creative as novels and plays. In this regard, the professor argues that it is unjust to claim that people who are not reading literature are not engaging in intellectually stimulating activities.

Secondly, the author also states that people are partaking in lower-quality entertainment instead of reading, which has diminished the overall cultural level. However, the professor points out that people are not only spending less time with literature but also with books in general. There is a significant amount of culturally valuable material that isn't written, including music and films. The professor explains that as culture evolves, there are now more diverse and creative ways to express feelings and ideas beyond traditional literature. These forms of art would not be a waste of time and would not lower cultural standards.

Lastly, the author claims that due to poor reader standards, literature will decline. The professor counters this argument by stating it is not solely the fault of readers; contemporary literary works can be challenging to understand. In conclusion, while novels were popular in previous generations, it remains uncertain whether readers from those times would have been interested in today's literary works due to their complexity and difficulty. Both the article and the lecturer delve into the circumstance that people are reading less literature. The author of the article raises three concerns about the condition while the lecturer disputes each one made in the article. To begin with, the author mentions that through reading less literature, the public is missing out on the important benefits of reading which cannot be substituted. This specific argument is chanllenged heavily by the lecturer. She says that books about science, history and political are just as high quality and creative as literature, and are substancial for expanding imagination and intelectual stimulation as well. Furthermore, the author asserts that prevalence for trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the standard of culture. However, the lecturer suggets that the reason people prefer music and movies these days is because culture has changed and people are kin of the cultural forms that they can relate to directly, but this does not imply that people adopt lower taste for culture. Finally, the author points out that the poor standards of readers have led to less investment and support in literature and writers. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that writers are actually the ones to blame for the circumstances. This is because the books are too obscure to read and this attributes to the decline in reading. Even readers from the past would not want to read the books either.

In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that writers are actually the ones to blame for the circumstances. The lecture casts doubt on the reading passage's assertion that the decline of literature lowers the level of culture. Firstly, the lecture argues that non-literary books can be intellectually stimulating as well. For instance, genres such as science, history and politics all have an abundance of high-quality, well-written books with multitudinous creative and inspiring ideas, which are able to boost imagination as well as novels and plays do. This contradicts the passage's claim that literature is non-subsitutable in stimulating intellect and creativity. Furthermore, the lecture contends that even though the time spent on reading books is decreased in general, doesn't mean that the culture is in decline. The lecture highlights that nowadays, a variety of non-written materials are filled with great cultural values. There are many forms of expression available today, and this cannot serve as an attribution of downgrade of cultural standards. This challenges the passage's statement that the trend of reading less literature leads to the decline of the entire culture. Lastly, despite the fact that literature is less supported by modern generations, the lecture highlights that readers should not be imputed to this result. Specifically speaking, some authors of modern literature have a certain intention to make their books difficult to understand. Therefore, less readers find modern literary works attractive, which refutes the passage's opinion that the poorly standards of today's readers is the cause of the downfall of literature.

Exemple d'Utilisateur

According to the passage, the author claims that the decline in literature reading is troubling, which would have bad effects. However, the lecturer casts her doubt with a counterpoint, emphasizing that such a relationship is not reliable. Firstly, the author states that the decline in book reading, which is most significantly for literature, would do harm to intellectual stimulation, imagination exercise, and comprehension of language. Nevertheless, the lecturer argues that such an association is not conceivable. While decline in literature reading, there are still many people interested in books illustrating science, history, and politics, all of which could play an important role in mental development. Secondly, the author insists that with the development of technology, more and more people choose to spend time enjoying entertainment medias such as music videos, television, and so on, all of which would lower the level of culture. On the other hand, the lecturer confronts such an opinion indicating that the culture, developed all times, is in its way of keeping pace with technological development. Such innovation in video, film, and website is also a platform for performing culture. There is no doubt that such a development in multi-media would contribute a lot to cultural advancement. Finally, as the author thinks that fewer audiences caused less investment to writers, which unavoidably leads to the decline of literature, the lecturer claims that such a dilemma could not be wholly attributed to the audience, which is unfair. As audiences would always enjoy classical novels, the declined interest in modern literature was a reflection of the poor level of nowadays writers, who have no choice but to improve their ability to retain their reputation.

While declinea decline(This rule identifies whether the article 'a' is missing in a sentence.) in literature reading, there are still many people interested in books illustrating science, history, and politics, all of which could play an important role in mental development.

Secondly, the author insists that with the development of technology, more and more people choose to spend time enjoying entertainment medias such as music videos, television, and so on, all of which would lower the level of culture. On the other hand, the lecturer confronts such an opinion indicating that the culture, developed allin all(This rule identifies whether the preposition 'in' is missing in a sentence.) times, is in its way of keeping pace with technological development. Such innovation in video, film, and website is also a platform for performing culture. There is no doubt that such a development in multi-mediamultimedia(Hyphenated words: multi-media) would contribute a lot to cultural advancement.

The passage asserts that the decline in literature reading is troubling and has negative consequences. However, the lecturer challenges this notion by providing counterarguments that demonstrate the unreliability of such a relationship.

Firstly, the author contends that the significant decline in literature reading negatively impacts intellectual stimulation, imagination exercise, and language comprehension. In contrast, the lecturer posits that this correlation is not necessarily accurate. Despite the decline in literature reading, many people remain interested in books covering science, history, and politics, all of which contribute to mental development.

Secondly, the author maintains that as technology advances, more people choose to spend time on entertainment media such as music videos and television, leading to a lowered cultural level. Conversely, the lecturer disputes this viewpoint by highlighting that culture continually evolves alongside technological advancements. Innovations in video, film, and websites also serve as platforms for cultural expression. Undoubtedly, these developments in multimedia contribute significantly to cultural progress.

Lastly, while the author believes that a smaller audience results in less investment for writers and an inevitable decline in literature quality, the lecturer argues that it is unjust to place sole blame on readers. Although audiences continue to appreciate classic novels, their diminished interest in modern literature reflects the subpar quality of contemporary writers who must enhance their skills to maintain their reputation. In the reading passage, the author cites a study highlighting the decline in literature consumption and the potential problems this may cause. However, the lecture presents a contrasting perspective, asserting that these issues are not as concerning as they may seem.

Firstly, the passage suggests that reading less literature results in diminished intellectual stimulation for individuals. In contrast, the professor contends that other forms of writing, such as scientific articles and historical analyses, can also provide intellectual stimulation. Thus, literature is not the sole source of intellectual enrichment.

Moreover, while the passage argues that replacing literature with superficial forms of entertainment leads to cultural degradation, the professor disagrees. He asserts that engaging with alternative forms of expression like music or film does not necessarily signify a decline in culture. In fact, enjoying a brilliant song or watching an excellent movie may be more beneficial than reading literature for some individuals. Furthermore, he emphasizes that culture has evolved over time and now encompasses various forms of expression beyond novels and poems.

Lastly, contrary to the reading's claim that it is regrettable for people to read less good literature today and that readers should bear responsibility for this trend, the professor points out that authors of modern literature should also be held accountable. She explains that many contemporary literary works are intentionally difficult to comprehend and suggests that even readers from earlier generations would likely struggle with them. Consequently, she argues that authors should shoulder some blame for this situation rather than placing it solely on readers. (258 words)

The first point raised by the passage is that by reading less literature, people miss out on intellectual stimulation, as well as benefits such as improved imagination and language understanding. However, the lecturer counters this argument by stating that other reading materials, such as science and history books, can also be of high quality and provide intellectual stimulation and imagination to readers. Thus, literature is not the sole means for individuals to develop these skills.
