We've discussing government budgets and the difficult decisions governments must make regarding the use of public fund. Some services are clearly essential and must be paid for by any government. But what about public funding of the arts? Do you believe that government should provide financial support to artists, for example, painters, sculptors, musicians or filmmaker? Why and why not?

Claire

I enjoy art as much as anyone does, but public funds come from taxes, and i don't think taxpayer' hard-earned money should be spent on impractical pr inessential items and services. Artists should support themselves by selling their work to private individuals and companies. If they can't find enough buyers, then maybe they should change careers.

Paul

I personally think art actually is essential. Lots of public spaces in my hometown just would be the same without artwork. From status in public parks to murals painted on the walls of government buildings, my hometown really benefits from funding the artists who created these works. The public spaces are simply more enjoyable for visitors because of the artwork.

Exemple d'Utilisateur

When discussing about the topic of whether the government should provide financial support to artists or not, I personally lean towards the later. Although Paul said that artworks are important to the decoration of public parks, I think the government should pay for those who create paintings or sculptures to those parks instead of directly providing financial support to all artists. I think government should pay more attention to build or maintain infrastructure and education of children who lived in a rural area or poor family and have no opportunity to go to school. As Claire said, public funds come from taxes and taxpayers’ hard-earned money should not be spent on impractical items like arts. With those actions, the happiness index of residents in this country will increase, which in turn helps the stability of society. In the contrast, if the government provide financial help to all artists without limitation, someone may utilize this loophole to earn money from the government.

3. Task completeness:

The essay does a fair job of addressing the task requirements, as it presents a clear viewpoint on the issue of government funding for artists. However, the essay could be improved by providing more specific examples and elaborating on the reasons behind the writer's opinion. Additionally, incorporating more perspectives from the reading passage would strengthen the essay's relevance to the academic discussion.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Include more specific examples to support your viewpoint.

  • Elaborate on your reasons for believing that government funds should be allocated elsewhere.

  • Incorporate perspectives from both Claire and Paul in your discussion.

Examples:

  1. Instead of just mentioning that government funds should be used for infrastructure and education, provide concrete examples of how these investments can improve society.
  2. Discuss how artists can seek alternative sources of funding, such as grants or sponsorships from private organizations.

4. Essay structure and organization:

The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, it could benefit from clearer organization within each paragraph and smoother transitions between ideas.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Improve paragraph organization by focusing on one main idea per paragraph.

  • Use clear transitions between ideas and paragraphs to enhance readability.

Examples:

  1. In your introduction, briefly mention both Claire's and Paul's perspectives before stating your own viewpoint. This will provide context for your discussion.
  2. When transitioning between paragraphs or ideas, use phrases like "on the other hand," "moreover," or "in contrast" to guide readers through your argument.

In the debate regarding government funding for artists, I find myself agreeing with the perspective that opposes such financial support. While Paul argues that art contributes significantly to the aesthetic appeal of public spaces, I believe that the government should only compensate artists who create pieces specifically for these parks and buildings, rather than offering blanket financial assistance to all artists. Instead, the government should prioritize investing in essential infrastructure and educational opportunities for underprivileged children in rural areas or low-income families. As Claire points out, public funds are derived from taxpayers' hard-earned money and should not be allocated to impractical pursuits like art. By focusing on improving infrastructure and education, the overall happiness index of residents will likely increase, leading to a more stable society. Conversely, providing unrestricted financial aid to all artists could result in exploitation of this system for personal gain. (149 words)

3. Task Completeness

The essay effectively addresses the task requirements by providing a clear opinion on the best way for a company to attract new employees. The writer supports their viewpoint with relevant examples and acknowledges alternative ideas presented in the reading. However, there is room for improvement in terms of elaborating on the examples provided and offering more specific details to strengthen the argument.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Provide more concrete evidence or statistics to support your argument.

  • Discuss potential drawbacks or limitations of your proposed solution.

Example 1: Instead of just mentioning a study conducted by an international company, provide specific details about the study, such as its sample size, methodology, and key findings.

Example 2: Discuss how offering competitive compensation packages may not be feasible for small businesses or startups, and suggest alternative ways these companies can attract new employees.

4. Essay Structure and Organization

The essay has a clear structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point with supporting details. However, transitions between ideas could be improved to enhance the overall flow of the essay.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Use transitional phrases to connect ideas within paragraphs.

  • Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that introduces its main idea.

Example 1: In the second paragraph, use a transitional phrase like "While it is true that" before discussing Andrew and Claire's viewpoints to show contrast with your own opinion.

Example 2: In the first body paragraph, start with a topic sentence like "Offering competitive compensation packages is crucial in attracting new employees because it provides financial security." This will help introduce your main idea more clearly.

Title: 6 文章修订

One significant drawback of being an early adopter is the rapid obsolescence of the purchased product. This occurs because when electronic devices or software are initially released, they are often in their nascent stages of development. As competitors begin to produce similar products, innovations and enhancements quickly materialize, rendering older versions outdated in a short span of time.

For instance, my mother purchased the first Apple iPhone several years ago. This initial model was relatively bulky and had a slow internet connection. However, within just one year, the iPhone 2 was introduced with a sleeker design, larger screen, and faster internet connectivity. As a result, my mother experienced considerable regret and lamented her decision not to wait for a more advanced product.

In light of this example, it is evident that early adopters face a significant disadvantage: their cutting-edge products lose relevance quickly as newer iterations are introduced at an accelerated pace. (155 words)

Title: 6 文章修订

In my opinion, attributing childhood obesity solely to parental negligence is an oversimplification of a multifaceted issue. As mentioned by Zoe, various factors contribute to this alarming trend. Firstly, the prevalence of fast food in children's diets is a significant contributor. Fast food is notorious for its high caloric content, sugar, and fat – all of which can lead to obesity. Fast food establishments often employ enticing flavors and appealing toys to attract young customers; thus, these businesses should also be held accountable. Secondly, children's demanding academic schedules often leave them with little time or energy for physical activity. For instance, my cousin Tom's exhaustion from his rigorous studies has been a primary factor in his weight gain. Consequently, it is crucial to recognize the multitude of influences on childhood obesity rather than placing the blame solely on parents. (142 words)

While the importance of discipline in college cannot be denied, the ability to choose whether or not to attend class does not necessarily indicate a lack of responsibility; in fact, it may enhance it. With an approach that evaluates students' grades entirely based on exams or papers, those who achieve high marks must have effectively studied the course material on their own, regardless of their attendance. To excel in these courses without attending class, a student would need to persevere and navigate the learning process independently, as there would be no teacher or mentor readily available for guidance. This experience fosters essential skills such as independent learning and self-reliance, which prove invaluable when entering a new work environment. Employers may recognize and appreciate this resilience, making such students attractive candidates for hire. (137 words)

Title: 6 文章修订

Addressing environmental pollution is a pressing issue in today's society. In my opinion, enhancing access to public transportation and reducing automobile usage can effectively mitigate the consumption of fossil fuels and decrease air pollution resulting from vehicular emissions. For instance, the combustion of fossil fuels in private vehicles releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, leading to considerable local environmental concerns. Furthermore, traffic congestion caused by private vehicles contributes to increased fuel consumption and subsequent emission of pollutants.

By promoting public transportation options such as buses and trains, these modes can accommodate more passengers who previously relied on personal vehicles, thereby reducing the overall consumption of fossil fuels. As public transportation becomes more prevalent, air pollution caused by traffic congestion can also be alleviated. Buses and trains can effectively address traffic congestion issues while simultaneously reducing excessive energy consumption during peak travel times. Consequently, it is evident that increasing access to public transportation can significantly contribute to environmental protection efforts within local communities. (168 words)

I concur with Amy's perspective that young children should not be permitted to watch online videos, as they may be adversely influenced by the content they encounter. The vast array of material available on the internet can pose a challenge for impressionable minds, who may struggle to discern between appropriate and inappropriate content. For instance, exposure to violent or morally questionable material could lead children to emulate such behaviors, perceiving them as appealing or "cool." Consequently, this impedes their ability to cultivate a strong moral compass and develop accurate values and cognitions. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the potential negative impact of online videos on young children's development.

Revised Essay: I wholeheartedly agree with Amy's viewpoint that young children should not be allowed to watch online videos, as they may be detrimentally influenced by the content they come across. The plethora of materials accessible on the internet can present a formidable challenge for impressionable minds, who might find it difficult to distinguish between suitable and unsuitable content. For example, exposure to violent or ethically dubious material could prompt children to mimic such behaviors, perceiving them as alluring or "cool." From my own perspective, I think we should make secondary or high school students make some important decisions by themselves since they will have more motivation to learn this major. To be specific, if the students are willing to choose a major, they may be more interested in this major. For this reason, they will learn the knowledge actively, and when they find they face some hardships, they will not give up easily because they are interested in and want to solve the difficult to gain a best answer. In contrast, if the choice of the major which cannot attract students’ interest is decided by their parents instead of by themselves, students will grumble their parents why to choose this major as students cannot finish lots of homework or understand the knowledge professor taught. Thus, students may not pass lots of exams due to uncomprehension of knowledge. As a result, while students will choose their major by themselves, there will be more benefits then letting students’ parents choose.

  1. 在文章开头加入引言部分,例如:“In the debate over whether secondary school students should be allowed to choose their own field of study at university, there are various opinions. I believe that students should have the autonomy to make this decision.”

  2. 在正文中,将不同的论点分开讨论,并使用恰当的过渡词汇连接各个段落。例如:“Firstly, allowing students to choose their own major can increase their motivation in learning. On the other hand, if parents make the decision for them, it may lead to a lack of interest and poor academic performance.”

Revised Essay:

In my opinion, secondary or high school students should be allowed to make crucial decisions, such as choosing their field of study at university, independently. This autonomy fosters a greater motivation to learn and excel in their chosen major. Specifically, when students select a major based on their interests and passions, they are more likely to actively engage in the learning process. Moreover, they will persevere through challenges and difficulties because of their genuine interest in finding solutions and achieving success.

On the other hand, if parents impose their choices on students without considering the latter's preferences, it may lead to dissatisfaction and poor academic performance. Students might resent their parents for selecting a major that does not align with their interests or aptitudes, resulting in a lack of motivation to complete assignments or comprehend complex concepts. Consequently, they may struggle to pass exams and ultimately fail to thrive in their chosen field.

Therefore, granting students the freedom to choose their own field of study at university is essential for fostering personal growth and academic success. By allowing them to follow their interests and passions, we empower them to take responsibility for their education and future careers. (203 words)

While I understand Paul's perspective on the necessity of free public transportation for environmental protection and potential reduction in healthcare costs, I concur with Kelly's argument against increasing tax revenue for this purpose. In addition to Kelly's point, I believe that providing free public transportation may lead to unintended social issues. Specifically, it could attract individuals experiencing poverty who may engage in undesirable activities such as begging, street performing, or scamming.

For instance, Shanghai, a city with free public transportation, has witnessed a surge in impoverished individuals begging on buses and subways. There have been cases where people were deceived by these individuals, resulting in significant financial losses. Both students have touched upon the debate regarding whether employees should be allowed to work remotely. In my opinion, I believe that employees should be encouraged to work remotely for several reasons.

Firstly, remote work can effectively alleviate the work pressure experienced by employees, as they have the autonomy to choose their preferred work environment. For instance, in Southeast Asia, a considerable number of people opt for relocation and engage in remote work from picturesque beach locations, a phenomenon known as digital migration. These individuals can directly enjoy the leisure and relaxation offered by sun-soaked beaches after participating in virtual meetings with colleagues located thousands of kilometers away.
