Scatter Hoarding Many animals live in environments where food is plentiful during certain times of the year and scarce during other times of the year. In such environments, some animals collect and prepare food when it is plentiful, then hoard it—store it—for future use. Some types of hoarders engage in scatter hoarding. Unlike other types of hoarders, scatter hoarders do not store the food all in one place; instead, they scatter it—divide it up and hide it in many places. Later, at a time when food is scarce, the hoarders return to these hiding places and recover the food.

The speaker provided a coherent and well-organized response, with clear connections between ideas and sufficient support or examples from the reading and listening materials. The example of the squirrel was well explained, and the concept of scatter hoarding was effectively illustrated. To further improve, the speaker could consider adding more details from the listening passage, such as how the squirrel prepares the nuts by removing the outer shell and cleaning them, which may help preserve the nut or make it easier to eat later on.
5.语言使用Original Answer: Scatter hoarding is when animals collect and prepare food when it's plentiful for future use. They do not store their food in one place, but scatter it into many different locations. For example, a kind of squirrel that lives in northwesternnortheastern U.S., they eat nuts. And in winter, when the weather is cold, the nuts are very difficult to find, but they lie all over the place in autumn. So during autumn, the squirrel spends lots of time finding nuts and preparing them. They then dig little holes and bury their nuts in them. Instead of burying hundreds of nuts in one hole, they dig hundreds of little holes and bury only one nut in each hole. This is probably because that even if other animals happen to find their holes with nuts, the squirrel will still have a lot of other holes. Therefore, this is an example of scatter hoarding.
(原文中的“northwestern”应改为“northeastern”,因为讲座中提到的是美国东北部。)
Revised Answer (140 words): Scatter hoarding occurs when animals gather and prepare food during times of abundance for future consumption. Instead of storing food in a single location, they distribute it across numerous sites. One example is a species of squirrel found in the northeastern United States that primarily feeds on nuts. During winter, nuts become scarce; however, they are abundant in autumn. The squirrel devotes considerable time to locating and preparing nuts during this season. It digs numerous small holes, placing a single nut in each one rather than storing all the nuts together. This strategy ensures that even if other animals discover some of the hidden nuts, the squirrel will still have access to a sufficient supply from its other caches. This behavior exemplifies scatter hoarding.
