Optimal Foraging Food provides animals with the energy they need to survive. However, animals also lose energy in the process of obtaining, or foraging, for food. Therefore, in order to conserve energy, many animals behave in ways that minimize the energy they expend in the foraging process while at the same time maximizing their nutritional benefits. This energy-efficient approach to obtaining food is known as optimal foraging. The practice of optimal foraging allows animals to expend the least possible amount of energy while at the same time obtaining prey with high food value that will provide them with necessary nutrients.

Original: This lecture talks about a concept called Optimum ForageOptimal Foraging(最佳觅食,而非最佳牧场), which means the animal minimizes the energy expended in the foraging process, which at the same time maximizes their nutrition benefits. This professor in the lecture takes a bird as an example to explain this concept. The bird feeding on the shellfish needs to crack the shellfish's hard shell. What the bird do is to carry the shellfish into the air and drop the shellfish and let it fall into the rock. When the shellfish hits the rock, it will crack and the bird is able to eat it. There are two things. The bird always selects the biggest shellfish and always carries it to a specific height, like 5 meters. This saves the bird a lot of energy.
Revised (140 words): The lecture discusses a concept called Optimal Foraging, which involves animals minimizing energy expenditure during foraging while maximizing nutritional benefits. The professor uses a bird as an example to illustrate this concept. This bird feeds on shellfish with hard shells that need to be cracked open. To do so, the bird carries the shellfish into the air and drops it onto rocks below. When the shellfish hits the rocks, its shell cracks, allowing the bird to consume it. The bird employs two strategies: selecting only the largest shellfish and carrying them to a specific height of around 5 meters before dropping them. These tactics enable the bird to conserve energy while obtaining valuable nutrients.
