TOEFL Preparation Guide (2026): A Step-by-Step Plan and the Best Study Material
Good TOEFL preparation in 2026 starts with the new format: about 2 hours, adaptive, with new task types and a 1–6 score scale. Most older prep material doesn't cover it. This guide takes you through seven steps — from a diagnostic test to test day — and lists the official ETS study material that matches the current test.
Test facts are from ETS pages read 3 October 2026. Study advice is ours; it uses no invented score-gain or study-hour figures. Check ETS for the current test.
How to prepare for the TOEFL in 7 steps
1. Understand the 2026 format
Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT takes about 2 hours, adapts to your level, and reports scores on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps (ETS, ETS scale). Many task types are new. Read our TOEFL 2026 format guide before you buy anything.
2. Take a diagnostic test
Take a full, timed practice test before you study, so you know where you start and which section costs you most. Our free TOEFL mock test uses the 2026 task types and gives an estimated 1–6 band.
3. Set your target band
Find the minimum for every program you will apply to — total and, where listed, per section. Our university requirements list shows 1–6 minimums with sources. Your target is the highest minimum on your list, plus a margin.
4. Make a study plan
Work back from your test date (ETS suggests one 2–3 months before your earliest deadline: ETS). Generate a schedule for your weeks and weak sections with the TOEFL study plan generator, or follow the 4-week TOEFL plan if your date is close.
5. Practice section by section
Spend most of your time on the section with the biggest gap to your target. The section guide below lists what each one tests and where to practice.
6. Use official ETS materials
Take ETS's free 40-minute TOEFL iBT Sample Test to see real test questions (ETS), and use the Official Guide if you want a book — see what the Official Guide covers. The full list is in the table below.
7. Final week and test day
Take one last timed mock to set your pacing, then taper. Check that the name on your ETS account exactly matches your ID (Bulletin). For the Home Edition, run ETS's equipment check well before the day (ETS requirements). Scores are posted about 3 days after the test.
Section-by-section TOEFL practice
Item counts and timings are ETS's; they can vary slightly because the test adapts (ETS test content).
Reading
50 items, about 30 minutes: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage.
Complete the Words rewards vocabulary and spelling under time pressure — practice filling in word endings in short academic paragraphs. For daily-life texts (notices, emails, posts), train yourself to find the purpose fast. Practice: TOEFL reading practice.
Listening
47 items, about 29 minutes: Listen and Choose a Response, Conversation, Announcement, Academic Talk.
Short exchanges test whether you catch tone and intent, not just words. Listen daily to campus-style conversations and short lectures, and practice light note-taking for the longer talks. Practice: TOEFL listening practice.
Writing
12 items, about 23 minutes: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion.
Build a Sentence is grammar and word order — drill question forms and clauses. For the email, practice hitting every point in the prompt in a polite, clear register: Write an Email guide. For the discussion, state a position and add a reason others didn't give: Academic Discussion guide.
Speaking
11 items, about 8 minutes: Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview.
Listen and Repeat tests how accurately you reproduce a sentence you hear — practice chunking sentences into meaning groups: Listen and Repeat guide. For the interview, rehearse short, organized answers on everyday and campus topics: interview topics. Record yourself and listen back.
TOEFL prep material: free official vs paid resources
ETS's own resources are the safest study material because they reflect the real 2026 tasks:
| Resource | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT Sample Test | Free (no fee listed; short sign-up form) | 40-minute, self-paced sample with questions from all 4 sections |
| TOEFL iBT Test Prep Planner | Free PDF | ETS's 8-week plan with tips, skill-building activities and sample questions |
| ETS test content pages | Free | Official description of every 2026 task type and its timing |
| TOEFL TestReady | Paid items (prices on ETS) | ETS's prep portal: practice tests, courses, guides, books, progress tracking |
| The Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT Test | Paid book | ETS's book on the test; see our overview of what it covers |

Common TOEFL preparation mistakes
- Studying from pre-2026 material only. Older books practice tasks that are no longer on the test and use the old 0–120 scale.
- Skipping timed practice. The 2026 sections are short and fast; pacing is a skill you only build under a timer.
- Never recording yourself. Speaking is about 8 minutes of recorded answers; you need to hear how you sound.
- Booking too late. Leave room for scores to reach universities and for one retake — see TOEFL test dates.
Step 2 starts here: take your diagnostic
A free, timed practice test in the 2026 format gives you an estimated 1–6 band and shows which section to work on first.

How should I start preparing for the TOEFL?
Learn the 2026 format first (four sections, about 2 hours, scored 1–6), then take a timed diagnostic to find your current band. Set your target from your universities' requirements, and build a weekly plan that spends most time on your weakest section.
How long does TOEFL preparation take?
It depends on the gap between your current level and your target, and ETS does not publish a standard figure. ETS recommends choosing a test date at least 2–3 months before your earliest deadline and registering about 4 months ahead, which in practice gives most people a few months to prepare, including time for a retake.
What is the best TOEFL study material?
Start with ETS's own materials, because they show the real 2026 task types: the TOEFL iBT Sample Test, the free 8-week Test Prep Planner, the test content pages, and paid options like TOEFL TestReady and the Official Guide. Add section-specific practice and timed mock tests on top.
Are old TOEFL prep books still useful in 2026?
Only partly. The TOEFL iBT changed on 21 January 2026: new task types, a shorter adaptive test and a 1–6 score scale. Older materials still help with academic vocabulary and listening, but they don't practice tasks like Complete the Words, Build a Sentence or Listen and Repeat.
Can I prepare for the TOEFL for free?
Yes, to a large extent. ETS's Sample Test, Prep Planner and content pages are free, and LingoLeap offers a free mock test and free practice pages for each task type. Paid resources mainly add more full-length practice and feedback.
