TOEFL ITP: What It Is, How It's Scored and How It Differs from the TOEFL iBT

The TOEFL ITP is a multiple-choice English test from ETS that schools, universities and programs give to their own students — on paper or on computer, sometimes remotely. It is not the TOEFL iBT that most universities ask applicants for: you can't book it yourself, and its scores stay with the institution that ran it. Here is what is on it, how it is scored, and when you need the iBT instead.

A summary of ETS's TOEFL ITP pages as of 3 October 2026. LingoLeap prepares students for the TOEFL iBT, not the ITP — we have no ITP practice material. For ITP, ask your institution or see ETS.

What is the TOEFL ITP?

ETS describes the TOEFL ITP Assessment Series as "a convenient, affordable and reliable assessment of English-language skills", administered every year by more than 2,500 institutions in 50+ countries (ETS). ETS recommends it for:

  • placement in intensive English programs at college or graduate level
  • progress monitoring, and exiting English programs
  • skill building and preparation for the TOEFL iBT
  • admissions to short-term, non-degree and collaborative programs, or to degree programs through testing an institution runs for its own use or its own pathways
  • scholarship programs, as supporting evidence of English proficiency

ETS adds that institutions should use the ITP for these purposes "and not as a replacement for the TOEFL iBT test".

TOEFL ITP Level 1 and Level 2: sections and timing

Level 1 covers intermediate to advanced learners; Level 2 high beginner to intermediate. Both are multiple choice and available on paper or digitally (ETS test content).

TOEFL ITP Speaking test: one read-aloud task, two independent speaking tasks and one integrated task, about 15 minutes, scored 31–68. It is only available with the digital Level 1 or Level 2 test (ETS). There is no Writing section.

TOEFL ITP scores and CEFR levels

Section scores come from the number of correct answers, converted to a scaled score. On Level 1, sections run from 31 to 68 (Reading to 67) and the total from 310 to 677 (ETS score data summary). ETS maps scores to the CEFR with these minimums (ETS scoring):

Level 1 covers A2 to C1; Level 2 reports only A2 and B1 (same minimums). Speaking test minimums: C1 64, B2 58, B1 48, A2 41. Score reports come from your local ETS Preferred Network office and are valid for 2 years. ETS notes that TOEFL ITP Plus for China is no longer administered.

How to take the TOEFL ITP (including online)

  • Through an institution. The ITP is administered by an institution "using your own facilities, staff and resources, or by an ETS Preferred Network office" (ETS). Your school tells you the date, place and fee.
  • Online. ETS offers institutions digital delivery and remote proctoring, which can include testing from home. Whether you can take it online depends on your institution.
  • No individual registration. If no institution offers it to you, contact the ETS Preferred Network office for your country — or, if you need a score for university admission, take the TOEFL iBT.
  • Rules. The TOEFL ITP Test Taker Handbook covers test day, score reporting and policies.

FAQ

What is the TOEFL ITP?

The TOEFL ITP Assessment Series is an ETS English test that institutions run for their own students — for placement, progress monitoring, exiting English programs, some admissions and scholarships. ETS says more than 2,500 institutions in 50+ countries administer it each year.

Can I take the TOEFL ITP test online?

Only through an institution. ETS offers digital delivery and remote proctoring to institutions, including the option to test from home, but you cannot book a TOEFL ITP yourself in an ETS account. Ask your school, or contact the ETS Preferred Network office for your country.

Is the TOEFL ITP accepted by universities?

Only in limited cases. ETS lists admissions uses for short-term and non-degree programs, collaborative programs, and degree admissions through testing run by an institution for use in that institution only. ETS states the ITP should not be used as a replacement for the TOEFL iBT, and ITP scores are not shared with other institutions.

What is a good TOEFL ITP score?

It depends on what the score is for. ETS maps Level 1 total scores to CEFR levels: 620 for C1, 543 for B2, 433 for B1 and 343 for A2. Your institution sets its own requirement.

How long is the TOEFL ITP valid?

ETS says TOEFL ITP score reports are valid for 2 years; scores more than 2 years old cannot be reported or verified.

Can I convert a TOEFL ITP score to a TOEFL iBT score?

ETS does not publish a conversion between ITP scores and the 2026 iBT 1–6 scale. Both map to CEFR levels, which is the closest common reference, but a university that requires the iBT will want an iBT score.
