Task Overview

Reading Passage

Broccoli is a vegetable that is popular throughout the United States, but it can be grown only in temperate climates with mild summers. Because of this limitation, 90 percent of the broccoli consumed in the United States is grown in the cooler regions of California, on the West Coast. It must be shipped 4,000 kilometers across the entire country to reach the populous East Coast. This situation may soon change, however: scientists are attempting to create a new type of broccoli that can be grown on the East Coast despite the hotter summers there. This project has several potential benefits. First, growing broccoli on the East Coast and distributing it to nearby grocery stores would lower broccoli costs for consumers. Transporting the vegetable from California by truck takes several days, which makes transportation costs high. Growing broccoli locally would reduce transportation costs, so stores could sell broccoli for less money. Second; the new type of broccoli will probably be much more desirable to consumers than some other new crops. The new broccoli is being created using traditional breeding techniques: researchers are crossbreeding broccoli with other similar plants that have desirable characteristics, such as resistance to hot summers. Other new crops—varieties of squash or maize, for example—were created using genetic modification technology. Genetically modified crops are very controversial: many consumers believe they are unsafe and so reject them. However, the new broccoli will not be in that category. Third, vegetables are healthiest to eat right after they are harvested because they retain most of their beneficial nutrients and vitamins. The longer it takes for a vegetable like broccoli to reach consumers, the fewer nutrients and vitamins it contains. Broccoli that is grown locally can be eaten much sooner after it is cut, which will make this new broccoli healthier for East Coast residents than California broccoli.

Both the reading and the listening discuss whether it is practical to grow Broccoli on the east coast of America. The reading proposes three ideas to support his idea, but the listening thinks that none of the reasons is convincing. First of all, although the reading essay deems that growing broccoli on the sell it locally will save the transportation cost. Due to the long distance and transportation, the cost of the item is high. The cost will be saved if the vegetable is grown in the east coast, thus, people are willing to buy it. However, what the reading agrees is doubted by the listening because even if the price is cheaper, the yield of the broccoli in the east is lower, resulting in a higher price. In the end, the price of broccoli will cancel off the savings in the transportation fee, suggesting that it is an unpractical method. In addition, the reading states that by utilizing traditional breeding methods unlike using genetic methods such as maize and squash, people will accept it more willingly. On the contrary, the listening refutes what the reading suggests. Consumers will doubt the method because the same company apply genetic modification on other vegetables, it may lead to distrust of consumers. Last but not least, the reading proposes that broccoli contains nutrition that is necessary for human beings. Growing broccoli on the east coast will have more nutrition because transporting from the west will eliminate the nutrition due to the long distance. The listening disagrees with what the reading says because other plants grow locally also contains the same nutrition. As well as the nutrition they contain, they can grow in summer and fall or winter. There is no need to introduce a new plant.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The reading and listening passages discuss the feasibility of growing broccoli on the East Coast of the United States. While the reading presents three arguments in favor of this idea, the listening challenges each point, suggesting that it may not be as practical as it seems.

Firstly, the reading claims that growing and selling broccoli locally would save on transportation costs, making it more affordable for consumers. However, the listening counters this argument by pointing out that although transportation costs may be reduced, the yield of broccoli grown on the East Coast would be lower. This would result in a higher price for the produce, effectively canceling out any savings from reduced transportation expenses.

Secondly, the reading asserts that since traditional breeding techniques are being used to create this new type of broccoli, consumers will be more accepting of it compared to genetically modified crops like maize and squash. The listening disputes this claim by highlighting that consumer trust may still be an issue due to financial support for this research coming from companies with a history of creating genetically modified crops. This association could lead to skepticism and rejection of the new broccoli variety.

Lastly, while the reading argues that locally grown broccoli would retain more nutrients and vitamins due to shorter transportation times, making it healthier for East Coast residents, the listening disagrees. It points out that other vegetables already grown on the East Coast contain similar nutrients as broccoli. For example, kale provides comparable health benefits and can be grown not only during summer but also in fall and winter. Instead of investing resources into developing new vegetables like this proposed broccoli variety, efforts should focus on educating people about consuming fresh, healthy vegetables already available locally. However, the professor opposes these three benefits by suggesting three points. Firstly, the passage states that creating new type of broccoli can lower costs for consumers due to reduced transportation costs. But in contrast, the professor refutes it by argues that while local cultivation may save on transportation costs, the lower yields of the new broccoli breed may necessitate higher selling prices, thereby negating any savings for consumers. In addition, the passage suggested the use of traditional breeding techniques which are less controversial than genetic modification. However, the lecturer disagrees by suggesting that despite the use of traditional breeding techniques, public distrust towards the companies funding the research, due to their past involvement in genetic modification, may lead to the new broccoli being rejected. Lastly, the passage states the importance of nutrients and vitamins contains in vegetables. But the lecturer questions the necessity of creating a new vegetable breed for nutritional value. He proposes that educating people about existing locally grown vegetables, such as kale, which offer similar health benefits and have a longer growing season, would be a more efficient use of resources.

Section Title: 6.文章修订

The reading passage posits that the majority of broccoli consumed in the United States is grown on the West Coast, leading to higher costs for East Coast consumers due to transportation fees. The passage suggests that a new hybridized broccoli could alleviate this issue by being able to grow on the East Coast, reducing transportation costs and providing additional benefits such as heat resistance and increased nutrient content. However, the lecture challenges these claims by presenting several counterarguments.

Firstly, the lecturer contends that although the new type of broccoli may be able to withstand higher temperatures, it could potentially have a lower yield compared to its West Coast counterpart. This would result in higher prices for East Coast consumers despite eliminating long-distance transportation costs. Consequently, there may not be any significant savings for consumers.

Secondly, the speaker highlights potential public distrust or rejection of the new type of broccoli due to its association with companies known for creating genetically modified crops. Even though traditional breeding techniques are used in developing this new variety, consumer skepticism towards these companies might negatively impact their perception of this new broccoli.

Lastly, the lecturer argues that it is unnecessary to invest resources into creating a new type of broccoli specifically for East Coast cultivation when other vegetables already grown in the region contain similar nutrients. For example, kale provides comparable health benefits and can be grown on the East Coast throughout various seasons. Instead of focusing on developing new vegetables, efforts should be directed towards educating people about consuming fresh and healthy locally available produce.

In conclusion, while the reading passage presents potential benefits of a new hybridized broccoli variety for East Coast consumers, the lecture challenges these claims by discussing issues related to lower yields, public distrust, and alternative nutrient-rich vegetables already available in the region. In the reading passage, the author highlights several potential benefits of developing a new type of broccoli that can be grown on the East Coast. However, the professor in the lecture challenges these ideas, arguing that this new type of broccoli may not be as successful or beneficial as claimed.

Firstly, the reading passage suggests that growing and distributing this new broccoli locally would reduce transportation costs and lower prices for consumers. However, the professor counters this by stating that although the new breed of broccoli can survive hot summers on the East Coast, it will have lower yields compared to West Coast-grown broccoli. Consequently, East Coast farmers will harvest less broccoli per hectare and will need to sell their produce at higher prices. This price increase would offset any savings on transportation costs, meaning East Coast consumers may not save money by purchasing locally grown broccoli.

Secondly, the author claims that since traditional breeding techniques are used to create this new type of broccoli, customers would be more receptive to it than other genetically modified crops. The professor disputes this assertion by pointing out that financial support for this research comes from companies associated with genetically modified crops in the past. As a result, many American consumers may distrust these companies and any projects they are involved in, potentially leading them to reject this new type of broccoli as well.

Lastly, while the reading passage posits that locally grown broccoli would provide more nutrients due to shorter times between harvesting and consumption, the professor challenges this argument by mentioning other vegetables already grown on the East Coast with similar nutrient profiles. For example, kale offers comparable health benefits and can be grown during summer as well as fall and winter seasons on the East Coast. Instead of investing resources into creating new vegetables like this proposed broccoli variety, educating people about existing fresh and healthy local vegetables might be a more effective approach. In the reading material, the author presents three arguments in favor of developing a new type of broccoli that can be grown on the East Coast and sold to consumers. However, the lecturer in the listening passage contends that there is no need for this new breed of broccoli and refutes each point made in the reading material.

Firstly, the author asserts that growing broccoli on the East Coast and distributing it to nearby grocery stores would lower costs for consumers. This is because transporting vegetables from California by truck takes several days, resulting in high transportation costs. By growing broccoli locally, these costs would be reduced, allowing stores to sell it at a lower price. The lecturer, however, disputes this claim by stating that due to the hot weather on the East Coast, broccoli yields would be diminished, leading to higher prices which may offset any savings from reduced transportation costs.

Secondly, the reading passage suggests that consumers will be more accepting of this new type of broccoli because it is created using traditional breeding techniques rather than genetic modification technology. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this argument by pointing out that the company behind this project has previously produced genetically modified vegetables. As a result, people may not trust this company and could reject their new breed of broccoli as well.

The reading passage introduces the topic of a new type of broccoli that can be grown on the East Coast despite the hotter summers there, and contends that this project has several potential benefits. The lecturer counters this by stating that this project might not be as beneficial as the scientists claim and challenges each of the claims made in the reading. Firstly, the reading passage suggests that growing broccoli locally on the East Coast would reduce transportation costs, so stores could sell broccoli for less money. The lecturer, however, believes that there are flaws in this claim. He contends that the new type of broccoli cultivated locally have lower yield and in that case, the farmers tend to sell at higher price, which cancels out the decline in the transportation cost. Secondly, according to the reading passage, the new broccoli has desirable characteristics and would not cause customers' concern since it is not genetically modified. The lecturer disagrees with this claim and argues that the public might still be suspicious when a company introduces a new product other than previous genetic modified crops, and they may reject the new type of product due to the distrust. Thirdly, the reading passage asserts that the new broccoli that is grown locally can be eaten much sooner after it is cut, which will retain most of their beneficial nutrients and vitamins and are healthier for East Coast residents. Casting doubt on this claim, the lecturer points out that other local plants also have similar beneficial nutrients and vitamins, and can grow in both fall and winter. Consequently, he suggests that the researchers should educate people to eat vegetables already locally planted.

However, the lecturer disputes these ideas by proposing counterarguments for each point. Firstly, the reading passage highlights the reduction of the transportation cost by explaining that local broccoli take less time as well as distance on the way to consumers. In this case, the groceries can sell them in a lower price and the consumers can have the same vegetables in a much lower price. Nevertheless, the lecturer challenges it by positing that the price to consumers will not definitely be lower because the other cost will cancel the saving in return. As a result, the new type of broccoli will not be cheaper and benefit the consumers. Secondly, the reading contends that the new type will be more desirable than other crops since they are crossbred with other similar plants who enable this vital characteristic. However, the lecturer disagrees with this argument and asserts the same concern reading passage already post. People may distrust this new technology and refuse to buy because it is origin from the same company who mastered the genetic modification skill, which is now controversial nowadays. Whereas the lecturer suggests that there are other local plants contain the same nutritions and cost less. Moreover, he also emphasizes that citizens are supposed to educate to have more fresh and healthy vegetables already plant locally.

Thirdly, the reading passage claims that it is healthiest to eat broccoli right after it is harvested. Casting doubt on the claim, the lecturer points out eating vegetables as soon as possible is right, but it is not necessary to eat a new type of broccoli, as other vegetables have the same nutrients and vitamins, such as Kale. It can not only grow in summer, but also in winter, which is a better vegetable for people. Section Title: 6.文章修订

The passage introduces the topic of creating a new type of broccoli that can be grown on the East Coast, citing several potential benefits. However, the lecturer challenges these claims and argues that this endeavor may not be as successful or beneficial as suggested.

Firstly, the reading passage asserts that growing broccoli on the East Coast would lower costs for consumers due to reduced transportation expenses. The lecturer, however, disputes this notion by stating that although transportation costs may decrease, the new broccoli variety would have a lower yield than its West Coast counterpart. Consequently, farmers would need to sell their produce at higher prices to compensate for this discrepancy, ultimately negating any savings from reduced transportation costs.

Secondly, the passage contends that consumers might prefer the new type of broccoli over genetically modified crops because it is created using traditional breeding techniques. The lecturer counters this argument by pointing out that public opinion may still be skeptical due to financial support for this research coming from companies previously involved in creating genetically modified crops. This association could lead consumers to distrust and potentially reject the new broccoli variety.

Lastly, the reading passage claims that consuming vegetables shortly after harvest is healthiest and implies that locally grown East Coast broccoli would provide such benefits. The lecturer challenges this assertion by acknowledging that while eating fresh vegetables is indeed beneficial, it is not necessary to create a new type of broccoli for this purpose. He highlights other vegetables already grown on the East Coast with similar nutritional profiles like kale which can be cultivated year-round. Instead of investing resources in developing a new vegetable variety, he suggests focusing on educating people about consuming fresh, locally available produce as a more economical approach. The broccoli on the East Coast has lower yield than the one on the West Coast, so farmers have to sell it in higher price which will cancel out the money saved by transportation. ¶ Secondly, according to the passage, consumers may prefer new type of broccoli than the traditional one. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this claim and argues that it is still uncertain. He goes on to say that consumers distrust companies that created genetic creating genetically modified crops in the past and might (clarified meaning). This association could lead consumers to distrust any and potentially reject of these companies, so it may lend to the rejection of new type of broccoli. the new broccoli variety (rephrased for clarity).

Thirdly, Lastly, the reading passage claims that it consuming vegetables shortly after harvest is healthiest to eat broccoli right after it and implies that locally grown East Coast broccoli would provide such benefits. The lecturer challenges this assertion by acknowledging that while eating fresh vegetables is harvested. Casting doubt on the claim, the lecturer points out eating vegetables as soon as possible is right, but indeed beneficial, it is not necessary to eat create a new type of broccoli, as broccoli for this purpose (clarified meaning). He highlights other vegetables have the same nutrients and vitamins, such as Kale. It already grown on the East Coast with similar nutritional profiles like kale which can not only grow be cultivated year-round (added detail). Instead of investing resources in summer, but also in winter, which is a better developing a new vegetable for people. Instead of creating a new type of vegetable, variety, he suggests focusing on educating people to eat fresh vegetables that are already made is about consuming fresh, locally available produce as a more economical.economical approach (rephrased for clarity and conciseness).
