Task Overview
Reading Passage
Compound Nesting Sometimes two different species of insects live close together, side by side. The two insect groups might even share the same home. But the two species often are different enough that they do not have to compete for the same resources, and therefore they can avoid conflict. This is known as compound nesting. Compound nesting actually provides advantages to both species, because living closely together can result in a specific benefit to each group, benefits that increase both species’ chances of survival.

修订版(140字):
In the lecture, the professor used the example of ants to illustrate the concept of compound nesting. There are two types of ants living in the same hollow tree branch. One species is quite small, while the other is significantly larger. The larger ants collect food and bring it back to the branch to eat. When they eat, small bits of waste are left behind, which the tiny ants consume as their food source. This arrangement benefits the larger ants as well, as it keeps their shared living space clean. By consuming the waste, the smaller ants prevent harmful bacteria from growing, which could cause illness and threaten the survival of the larger ants. This example demonstrates how compound nesting provides advantages to both species involved.
