Task Overview

Reading Passage

Housing Renovations Planned  Over the last ten years, the number of Central College students living on campus in dormitories has decreased by twenty percent. In an effort to counteract the trend, the college has announced a plan to renovate its on-campus housing. The renovations will take two years, and they will include improvements to the bathrooms, lighting, and heating in the dormitories. "A lot of people are moving off campus because the dorms aren’t in great shape," explained the college president. "By renovating the dorms, we can make them more appealing than off-campus housing, and more students will choose to remain on campus."

Question

5.语言使用

Original Answer: According to the reading passage, the college decided to renovate its own campus hallway on-campus housing(原文中的“own campus hallway”不太准确,应改为“on-campus housing”). The girl in the conversation disagrees with the plan. Firstly, she thinks it is too noisy. The construction of the new dorms needs to last for two years, and it causes a lot of noise. If students want to study and work at the dorms, it will be too disturbing. Secondly, she thinks students can't afford the price of new dorms if the school raises the cost of living in the own campus hallway on-campus housing(同上,应改为“on-campus housing”). Most students will just leave the school and rent a triple cheaper(原文中的“triple”不符合语境,应改为“cheaper”) apartment. That's the reason why the girl disagrees with the plan.

Revised Answer (140 words): According to the reading passage, Central College plans to renovate its on-campus housing to attract more students to live in dormitories. However, the woman in the conversation disagrees with this plan for two main reasons. First, she believes that the construction noise will be disruptive for students who are trying to study or sleep in their dorm rooms during the two-year renovation period. This may cause even more students to move off-campus to avoid disturbances. Second, she points out that raising the cost of on-campus housing to fund the renovations will make it less affordable for students. As a result, many students might choose to rent cheaper off-campus apartments instead of moving back into the dorms after the renovations are completed. These concerns lead the woman to disagree with the college's plan to renovate on-campus housing.
