TOEFL TPO -1 Writing Task 2 Sample: Group projects are an essential part of everyday life in school. Here comes the question: is it better to work independently, separating the quest equally into different parts, with each member responsible to his or her own part only, or is it better to collaborate in every step of the process? What is your take? Smith: I prefer to work independently while doing group project as I am concerned about the possible occurrence of free-riding if students choose to collaborate in the whole process. After all, not everyone is responsible in his or her own part, it is highly possible for the "free rider" to simply rely on the efforts of other people without contributing to the team. Unless extra mechanism can be arranged to prevent free riding from happening; for example, teachers can let team members grade each other's contribution to the team; otherwise, I could not trust the achievements done by collaboration between students while doing group project. Zoe: I see your point, Smith, but I prefer to work collaboratively when doing group project. My experience serves as a precise example. When I was in junior high school, two of my classmates and I were assigned to deliver a survey regarding students' opinion towards the cafeteria renovation program. We drew the initial plan together, decided the exact method of surveying students together, processed the data together, and wrote the report together. Even if there was a disagreement among us, we expressed our idea, tried to reach a compromise, and learned from each other in the process. In the end, we delivered an eminent presentation in front of the class, receiving applauses and an "A+". This is one of the best experiences in my life, and I benefit from it even until now.

From my perspective, I personnally approve the opinion to separate the quest equally into different parts, with each member responsible to his own part is an efficient than others since it can save much time and avoid someone to escape the responsibility. As Smith says that working independently help us to think our own part freely, I want to add that ,in fact, with the accelarating development in temporary society, many people are busy with their own academic tasks and schduling their own studying habit, completing individually helps us the save time and be efficient to work in their own rational time. Moreover, it is true that people can share their disagreement and ideas with each other it they complete the project tasks together, as Zoe says, but by listening to others’ opinions of the same questions will also limit our imagination. Additionally, many students always avoid the responsibility to share their own ideas when they are doing with other group members which lead to a negetive group atomosphere when corporating, worsening their peer affection as a result. In conclusion, in order to do something efficiently and improving students’ friendship, we should sperate the tasks and complete it by ourselves.

示例1: Instead of saying "completing individually helps us save time and be efficient," you could provide a specific example, such as "When working on a research project, dividing the tasks allows each member to focus on their area of expertise, leading to a more comprehensive and well-researched final product."
示例2: Rather than stating "listening to others’ opinions of the same questions will also limit our imagination," you could explain further by saying "Working independently allows each person to develop their own unique perspective on the topic, which can lead to more diverse and creative solutions when the group reconvenes to discuss their findings."

In today's fast-paced society, the debate over whether to work independently or collaboratively on group projects in school continues. While both approaches have their merits, I firmly believe that dividing tasks equally among group members and allowing each individual to be responsible for their own part is more efficient and beneficial.
Firstly, working independently allows students to manage their time more effectively. As Smith mentioned, many people are occupied with various academic tasks and have different study habits. By dividing the project into separate parts, each member can work on their portion according to their own schedule without being constrained by the availability of others. This not only saves time but also ensures that each student can devote their full attention to their assigned task, resulting in a higher quality final product.
Secondly, independent work encourages individual creativity and unique perspectives on the topic. Although Zoe argues that collaboration allows for sharing ideas and resolving disagreements, it can also limit one's imagination by constantly exposing them to the opinions of others. When working independently, each person has the opportunity to develop their own distinctive viewpoint on the subject matter, which can lead to more diverse and innovative solutions when the group reconvenes to discuss their findings.
Furthermore, assigning individual responsibility helps prevent free-riding and ensures accountability among group members. As Smith pointed out, not everyone is responsible for their own part in a collaborative setting; some may rely on others' efforts without contributing themselves. By clearly defining each person's role within the project, it becomes easier to hold everyone accountable for their work and maintain a positive group dynamic.
However, it is important not to overlook the potential benefits of collaboration when appropriate measures are put in place to prevent free-riding. For instance, teachers could implement peer evaluations where team members grade one another's contributions or establish regular check-ins throughout the project timeline to ensure everyone is staying on track.
In conclusion, while collaboration has its merits under certain circumstances, dividing tasks and working independently can lead to a more efficient and creative group project outcome. By allowing each individual to manage their time effectively, develop unique perspectives, and be held accountable for their work, students can maximize the potential of their group projects and foster a positive learning environment.
