Task Overview
Reading Passage
The desert locust is a large flying insect native to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Desert locusts sometimes migrate in vast swarms (groups) of millions or even billions ofinsects, destroving human crops along the way. Because of this insect's negative impact on agriculture scientists are investigating several ways of controlling locusts in the wild. Pesticides One way of preventing destructive locust swarms from developing is to apply pesticides (chemicals that kill insects) to locations where locusts are actively breeding (reproducing). Pesticides can be dropped from an airplane on such locations to prevent locust numbers from getting large enough for swarms to develop and destroy crops. Because spraying pesticides over wide areas can harm the environment, only known locust breeding spots should be targeted. Natural Enemies Some scientists believe that another effective strategy to control locusts is to use their own natural enemies against them. In particular, they are investigating the use of parasitic fungi (microorganisms) that infect and kill locusts in the wild. Scientists can grow these fungi in a laboratory and dissolve them in a liquid. The liquid can then be applied to locusts in the wild or to the plants they are eating. Once infected with the fungi, the locusts will spread the infection as they join other locust groups and expose them to the fungi, causing large numbers of locusts to die. Releasing Sterile Insects A third option involves creating sterile insects (insects that are unable to breed) in the laboratory and releasing them into the wild. When wild insects mate with sterile insects, they are unable to produce the next generation. The sterile-insect technique can result in a significant decrease in the reproduction rate of insects. Since this strategy has worked successfully for a number of other species of insects, some scientists think it may be the best way of controlling the desert locust.

The passage mainly discusses three ways to control locusts in the wild, yet the lecture challenges these hypotheses by pointing out their inherent flaws. First, it is said in the reading passage that disseminating pesticides in specific targeted area might prevent locusts from breeding. Nonetheless, the lecturer refutes that the breeding spots are usually remote and large, like in the desert, making them not only difficult to find, but may be easily overlooked in practice as well. Therefore, depending on this method will not be able to stop the breeding process. This is the first place where the lecturer disagree with the passage. Second, the writer states that letting the locusts infected and diseased by fungus can attribute to the final goal. On the contrary, the professor refutes that locusts are capable of detecting this kind of fungus, and will go to receive sunlight in order to raise their body temperature, slowing down the infection process. Therefore, they may lay eggs before dying. This is the second place where the speaker contradicts directly with the passage. Finally, the writer points out that cutting down their possibilities to generate offsprings through introducing sterile insects is the best way to control the popularity of locust. In contrast, the professor opposes that will not work well because the number of sterile insects produced in the laboratory is relatively less than the number of the species. The number is too small to stop locusts from reproducing, there will still be millions of locusts reproducing successfully in the wild. This is the last point that entirely refutes the reading passage.

This variability in breeding locations, as highlighted in the lecture, makes it nearly impossible to effectively target and eliminate the locust threat with pesticides alone.”
-
在讨论释放不育昆虫时,可以添加:“The lecture emphasized that the sheer number of wild locusts significantly undermines the effectiveness of the sterile insect technique, illustrating that even releasing millions of sterile locusts would barely make a dent in their population.”
4.文章结构与组织
The essay has a basic structure but lacks clear transitions and detailed support for each point made. It introduces the topic and summarizes the lecture's challenges to the reading passage's methods but does so in a way that feels somewhat disjointed.
Improvement suggestions:
-
Start with a stronger introduction that clearly states what will be discussed, including mentioning that the lecture challenges the methods proposed in the reading passage.
-
Each paragraph should focus on one method and its associated challenge as presented in the lecture, followed by specific examples or reasons why this challenge undermines the method's effectiveness.
-
Use clear transition words or phrases to move from one idea to another, making it easier for readers to follow your argument.
English examples:
-
A better introduction could be: “The discussion on controlling desert locusts presents three methods in the reading passage; however, the lecture provides compelling arguments against each, revealing significant flaws.”
-
For clearer transitions and organization: “Turning to natural enemies, specifically parasitic fungi, another issue arises as described in the lecture. Despite initial promise, locusts exhibit behavior changes when infected—seeking out sunlight to elevate their body temperature and slow down infection progress—thus limiting this method’s effectiveness.”

6.文章修订
The passage delineates three methodologies for controlling locust populations in the wild, yet the lecture systematically debunks these strategies by highlighting their inherent limitations. Initially, the passage suggests that targeting specific areas with pesticides could inhibit locust breeding. However, the lecturer counters this by emphasizing that locust breeding grounds are vast, remote, and variable—attributes that render them challenging to locate and likely to be inadvertently missed. Consequently, reliance on pesticide application is flawed as it fails to effectively halt the breeding cycle of locusts. This discrepancy marks the first point of contention between the reading material and the lecture.
Furthermore, while the passage posits that infecting locusts with parasitic fungi could curtail their population growth, the lecturer presents a compelling argument against this method. It is elucidated that locusts possess an innate ability to detect such infections and respond by basking in sunlight to elevate their body temperature. This behavioral adaptation decelerates the infection process sufficiently to allow time for egg-laying before death ensues. Thus, this mechanism significantly undermines the efficacy of using fungal infections as a control measure, establishing a direct contradiction with the assertions made in the passage.
Lastly, introducing sterile insects into the wild as a means of population control is championed in the passage as an optimal solution. Contrarily, the lecturer articulates skepticism regarding its effectiveness due to logistical constraints; specifically, producing a sufficient number of sterile insects to impact reproduction rates among vast swarms of locusts is impractical. Despite releasing millions of sterile insects into their habitat, their numbers pale in comparison to those capable of reproducing within wild populations. This final point starkly refutes the proposed solution outlined in the reading passage, culminating in a comprehensive critique of all three control methods discussed. (290 words)
