Task Overview
Reading Passage
Impression Manageme According to some sociologists, as we go about our lives, we try to control or manage the impression that we make on others in social situations. When we do this, we are practicing what sociologists call impression management. Even in everyday, ordinary interactions, we make special preparations—sometimes unconsciously—to convey certain information about ourselves that influences how others perceive us. These preparations often involve our personal appearance—how we look during the social interaction—as well as the social setting, which is the place where the social interaction occurs.

In the reading, it discusses impression management, which refers to people's attempts to control the impressions they make on others during social interactions. The professor provided two examples in the lecture to demonstrate this concept. Firstly, it concerns a class presentation. Students typically dress more formally for a class presentation to convey their seriousness and professionalism. The second example involves the professor himself. He once gave a ride to the university president. The day before, he removed trash from his car and had it washed to create an impression of responsibility and even changed the radio station to classical music. These examples illustrate how individuals engage in impression management to influence others' perceptions of them in various social situations.
