Task Overview
Reading Passage
Chemical Competition Different species of plants growing in the same area often compete for resources that theyneed for survival. Certain plant species compete by producing and releasing chemicals thathave an impact on nearby plants, a strategy known as chemical competition . The chemicalsthe plants release into the surrounding area negatively affect the growth of neighboringplants and decrease the other plants' ability to use resources effectively, reducing theirchances of survival. By engaging in chemical competition, a species may be able to thriveand sometimes even completely take over an area where other plants could normally grow.

Original Answer: According to the reading passage, the chemical competition is that certain plant species can be beat by producing and realizing chemicals that have an impact on nearby plants. According to the reading passage, chemical competition occurs when certain plant species produce and release chemicals that negatively affect nearby plants. The researchers found that there are few plants can grow in the same area where nearby weeds grow. The researchers found that few plants can grow in the same area where knapweed grows. Therefore, they tested the nearby effect. Therefore, they tested the effect of knapweed on other plants. (将原文中的“nearby effect”替换为“effect of knapweed on other plants”,使句子更清晰。) They divided into two groups. In the first group, normal soil was used, and the knapweed grew well, but the fescue did not. And they used special soil, and the nipweed and fescue can grow also well. In the second group, they used special soil, and both knapweed and fescue grew well.
Revised Answer (140 words): According to the reading passage, chemical competition occurs when certain plant species produce and release chemicals that negatively affect nearby plants. In the lecture, the professor discussed an experiment conducted by researchers to study the effect of knapweed on fescue grass. The experiment involved two groups. In the first group, normal soil was used, and the knapweed grew well, but the fescue did not. This result indicated that knapweed might be releasing chemicals that hindered the growth of fescue grass. In the second group, they used special soil that deactivated any chemicals released by plants. In this group, both knapweed and fescue grew well, confirming that knapweed engages in chemical competition. This example illustrates how knapweed uses chemical competition to dominate its environment and negatively impact other plants like fescue grass.
