Task Overview
Reading Passage
Ratchet Effect It would be natural to assume that people change their spending habits in proportion to changes in their income. This is not always the case, however, due to a phenomenon known as the ratchet effect . When the ratchet effect occurs, if income increases, spending also increases, but if income then decreases, spending does not decrease proportionally. The ratchet effect may occur because people become accustomed to a particular standard of living and therefore find it difficult to reduce spending, even when required to compensate for a decrease in income. The ratchet effect may lead to unpleasant financial consequences.

5.语言使用Original Answer: The marginal ratchet effect means if someone's income increases, the spending of the income will increase too. But when the income starts to decrease, the spending of the income will not decrease appropriately proportionally. And the professor is an example of incentive illustrativeness this phenomenon. The professor used to teach you classes, so he did not earn much money. And when the one professor left, he was able to teach more classes. So he made more money and they started to eat in the restaurant like four times a week. But when the professor came back after the semester, he did not cut down the time eating in the restaurant even he did not earn much money as before. Because he had schedules to eat outside and he even had to pay for the meals by his credit card.
Revised Answer (140 words): The ratchet effect occurs when an individual's spending increases as their income increases, but does not decrease proportionally when their income decreases. The professor's personal experience serves as an example of this phenomenon. Initially, the professor did not earn much money and cooked at home. However, when he started teaching more classes and earning more money, he began dining out frequently. After the semester ended and his income returned to its previous level, the professor found it difficult to cut down on eating out, even though he could no longer afford it as easily. He continued to dine out occasionally, resorting to using his credit card to cover the expenses. This example demonstrates the ratchet effect, as the professor's spending habits did not adjust proportionally to his decreased income.
